what is the one smell, that when you get a whiff, you immediately think HOLIDAYS!?
for me, it is a balsam smell. baking smells (vanilla and cinnamon) take me straight to thanksgiving, but a clean green is all about the man with the bag!!

I never saw this post until your PM. Sorry, cause I could have and would have answered this one. There is a Christmas blend potpourri that my wife cranks up, probably a pine tree and maxed out credit card mix, that puts me in the mood. Otherwise, it would be mint, like candy canes. :)

:-) My husband thinks I was a bear in a former life - I have quite the smeller -although it isn't abnormally large. There are many smells that take me back to Christmas memories.
:D One of the smells that consistently throws me into a state of Christmas joy is the smell of Scotch tape. No cheap brand will do; it has to be Scotch tape. It smells like pine needles to me so naturally when I'm wrapping gifts at anytime throughout the year for other occasions, when I smell the Scotch tape - I'm thinking Christmas instantly.
 Hold on there, don't go thinking I'm sniffing too much Scotch Tape - really the first tearing and pressing action alone does it.
:) There are a variety of evergreens, cedars, spruce and jack & scotch pines in our forests and a few on the other side of the creek from where I live so I can get the smell of Christmas at other times from real pine needles.

Tape? I am sitting here wondering what to say, as I would never have guessed in a million years that tape would set off your Christmas spirit. The smell of a well worn MasterCard, yes, but not tape. I think it's great that such things bring back happy memories, especially when such junk is going on in the world. That's a subject for another post, however.

Apples, cinnamon, baking, turkey and ham smells is what brings me to mind of holiday cooking smells.
Oh oh and one more thing that brings to mind of holiday cooking smells. When I was growing up my stepdads family is from the hispanic culture so tamales were an a typical holiday - christmas - new year holiday treat. So the stewed meat for the tamales and the masa smells bring on holiday smells and memories.

:-P Aha! I wondered if I was the only one who associated the smell of Scotch Tape with Christmas. I bought a few alternative brands when I was in College and living on a tight budget. When I ran out of tape while wrapping presents late one night, I had to go to the corner store to get some. Of course they only had Scotch Tape and it was a Mike's Milk store so it was really expensive. Those last three gifts were wrapped with a special Christmas joy.
I have a few lesser brands for back-up, but Scotch Tape is the kind I used the most.

:???: I just picked up three rolls of Scotch Tape when I was shopping on the weekend. I didn't need tape for anything in particular, but I just had to buy it. I smelled it right there in the store aisle and yes indeed it smelled like a Scotch Pine Tree. Had to buy it! Now I'm ready for Christmas!

I have to say the smell of butter cookies in the oven. My mother would always make a zillion of these. The best part was at the end, she would let us make and decorate our initial made out of butter cookie dough. That was the one cookie we could eat at breakfast on Christmas morning. A big green K covered with chocolate chips...YUM

What really used to do it for me was cutting down the tree --- sadly, that's a tradition I don't get to partake of anymore.

Okay I read all these posts but I'm still stuck on the Scotch Tape thing. I could understand the sound of Scotch tape reminding you of presents being rapped but the smell. I'm just gonna let that one alone. http://www.reuels.com/reuels/media/mm810-1.gif

Perhaps the smell of Hi Karate cologne! That old american tradition that broke inside it's wrapping one year under our tree...Another smell that I'll leave to your imagination, but it was delivered by a fun loving brother who wrapped his son's diaper just for me! Or, perhaps, the smell of Scotch...But not the tape kind...Again, I'll leave that your imagination...It's been almost 16 years since I smelled that last one! Seriously though, I love the smell of pine...In particular the first whiff I get when a big truck full of Christmas trees goes by...And those Yankee candle scents that my wife buys...Ok fine...I buy them too but I like those! And turkey, cookies, fire in the fireplace...Many more if your interested!

Ok, who all went to smell Scotch tape?? Lol!! That's funny! I'll admit it does have a smell, but I'm not getting pine! I can definately understand how the smell would remind you of Christmas after smelling it while wrapping all them presents, but pine isn't what my sniffer is smelling! It's awesome how sometimes the "little things" can trigger a thought of Christmas!

Wow, scotch tape and hi karate cologne really bring back memories. I remember wrapping presents when I was little and the smell of the tape was really strong. I remeber the wrapping paper in red and green foil and using the tape on that.
I also remember having to dust off all my dads colognes and hi karate I always laughed at the name when I was a kid. I had totally forgotten about it till now. :)

I forgot to mention my grandmas rum balls. Whoa were they ever strong smelling. She is gone now but when I was a kid she would send us a huge box of homemade goodies and gifts. Looked forward to getting them. The rum balls were really strong and the smell would take over everything else.
