Funny. I was channel surfing and saw this start the other night. Watched a couple of minutes of it because it has been a few years since I've seen it. My first thought upon seeing the opening credits roll were "oh, it's a Christmas movie".

I am looking forward to it. I went opening weekend and about 20 minutes in, the theater had some issue. They gave us replacement tix, but we never made it back, being it is 50 miles from home.

It's sad to live that far from a decent theater!:-?

CharlestonNole

Definately will have to check out.

Before the advent of DVD tech, I probably owned anywhere btween 800-1000 vhs. After I purchased my first dvd player, I sold most off in yard sales thinking I would replace on dvd. I did some, but some of title sstill have not been released on dvd. Needless to say, I am still aggravated (my fault though).

I even had a room similar to one you posted in the other thread. Can you say ebay? That was another mistake. Oh well, live and learn. I still have some classic 70's and 80's toys, but not like I used to.

Never make the mistake and get rid of any of it. Trust me, you will regret it.

Even had a 7500 comic collection from the seventies and eighties I ebayed a few years ago. Granted the money was awesome, but I wish I still had them.

rodmonster
10-09-2008, 01:11 PM
Yeah i keep it all.
I have thousands for DVDs and VHS - even some old Laser Discs.
Then i have thousands of 33s, 45s, 8tracks, cassettes, and DVDs, then on top of that 147 GB of MP3s.
As for the toys and comics and cars and such - a LOT came from rebuilding over the years of what i had as a kid - most from ebay.
My comics have gone down from 8000 to about 4000. I finally sold a bunch of the newer - more lame ones.
=)
But trust - i plan to never give it or sell it away.
My kid can have it once i am dead!
=)

Man, you are going to have to buy a bigger house to keep all that stuff!!

Your daughter will love you for it. All that stuff is probably the best investment right now.

Classic Christmas Favorites is indeed a set of vintage holiday specials, mostly from the team of Rankin/Bass. Start with the one that's not Rankin/Bass, but is a flat-out classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966), the Dr. Seuss tale about a curmudgeon who tries to stop Christmas from coming. From its Seussian zaniness to its humor to its music, Grinch is just about perfect in every way. The version included is the 2006 remastered version with Horton Hears a Who! (1970) and other material, and new for 2008 are three specials previously unavailable on DVD: The Leprechauns' Christmas Gold (1981), Pinocchio's Christmas (1980), and The Stingiest Man in Town (1978). The next most famous special is The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974), a stop-motion story in which Santa (voiced by Mickey Rooney) decides to take the holiday off, only to have the movie stolen by Heat Miser and Snow Miser. The 2007 deluxe edition has some documentary material and the two specials that were on the previous DVD, Rudolph's Shiny New Year (1976) and Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey (1977). On the third disc are the cel-animated Frosty's Winter Wonderland (1976, narrated by Andy Griffith), in which Frosty gets a snow wife, and 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (1974), which uses the Clement Moore poem as an excuse to tell a story about a human and a mouse who have to make amends when an offended Santa decides not to visit their town.

Finally, the stop-motion Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July (1979) is a feature-length (105 minutes!) special that follows the reindeer and the snowman as they get jobs at a Fourth of July circus! One of the fun things about this special is how a number of the original voices return to give the programs a similar look and feel: Jackie Vernon puts in his third stint as the voice of Frosty, Billie Richards again voices Rudolph, Shelley Winters three-peats her role as Crystal (Frosty's wife), and Mickey Rooney returns as Santa. The 2008 set Classic Christmas Favorites is an updated version of 2007's Christmas Television Favorites, adding the three new specials on disc 1. A quick look at the cover may lead one to think that this is all the original Rankin/Bass specials--Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman, etc. These aren't those, but they're still vintage Rankin-Bass and many people think of them just as fondly.

I've got an earlier version that only includes the Rankin Bass features. That's a nice set and I may need to pick it up as well.

These... had all but the Leprechaun - which i had been looking for.....

I filled the dvd player with christmas movies yesterday

total is 115 discs, & i still have alot to get

rodmonster
10-15-2008, 09:15 PM
My list is so long...
I have hundreds as well.
And my digital list is even longer.
I have my XBOX reset to show and play media now.
So i plan to move it up stairs and network it wirelessly to play them all via my Hard Drive.

dvdelf
10-15-2008, 09:18 PM
u have downloads?

Everything I have is on dvd these days, I found a way to burn them & convert them to ipod or cell phone

rodmonster
10-15-2008, 09:21 PM
Nearly 2 terabytes worth.
I used to burn them all to DVD.... finally had too many.
Then found a way to turn my Xbox into a media player that i can hook up anywhere and network back.
Much easier.
Plus i can re burn them anytime i need to.

dvdelf
10-15-2008, 09:27 PM
good lord where do you find them?

rodmonster
10-15-2008, 09:31 PM
All over.
Lots on Ebay...Old VHS or TV recordings that people sale by the box load.
Some are from my old VHS collections of recordings.
You Tube has tons of full things you can down and convert in high quality now.
Then anything i can get from my DVR.
When they do the marathons or one time rearing of things - i have it set...then down and save to the Hard Drive.

dvdelf
10-15-2008, 09:33 PM
good gosh, you have a drive that holds that much? Ive seen terrabyte drives but still, you gotta have a couple

rodmonster
10-15-2008, 09:35 PM
Yeah
I have one 1TB drive and three 500gb drives for my media and backup.
=)

I figure in the next few years if i can save for 8-10 TB - i could out all of my DVDs and VHS on them and never need to insert a DVD or VHS in a player again...
=)

rodmonster
10-15-2008, 09:51 PM
What i do is buy old TV guides from the holiday seasons (70s to 80s and a few early 90s)
Then i go through them and make a list of the shows or movies i see listed and want.
Then the search begins.
I look all over - even want and need blogs and forums until i track it down.

Ive got a 400 disc dvd player so im always keeping an eye out for new releases

You have the he-man Christmas?

CharlestonNole
10-15-2008, 10:00 PM
I thought I had a huge collection.

I have never been big on keeping my media on hard drives. Don't really know why not, I guess it is just the site of cabinets full of vhs, then dvd and know working on bluray.

I do figure eventually there will not be any hard media (ie: discs). I don't know if the current internet infrastructure could currently handle hi-def media. I suppose that is why blu ray won battle with hddvd and will eventually have to fight hidef downloads.

Earlier in this thread I had told rod about having a huge vhs collection (with some rare vhs), sold it off, thought I would replace with dvd. Did some, but till this day some of those haven't been released on dvd. now, like an idiot, I have begun to do the same with dvd, replacing with bluray. (I have blissfully stopped since joining these forums and talking with y'all). Some titles may never even see bluray.

I will be recording everything this Christmas season....

dvdelf
10-15-2008, 10:03 PM
with what i have I wont be awitching to blu-ray, its not worth the cost to me
It will be a while before blu-ray is THE format over standard dvds, by then who knows?
I already believe we are heading to the end of home phones as we know it

CharlestonNole
10-15-2008, 10:04 PM
Wish the studios would get off their duff and put some of this stuff out. You think they would with the popularity of many of other 80's properties already released: Transformers, GIJoe, Thundercats, Heman, just to name a few.

dvdelf
10-15-2008, 10:07 PM

I will tell you the pic and sound quality are tremedous, but too me it is not substantial enough to sink big money into. I have advised other family member not to.

I like it, but if I had to do it over again, I wouldn't. Even the media is on average 10 bucks more than standard dvd.

I may buy a few bd's here and there, like the Man Who Saved Christmas cause it was on 9 bucks at tower.

CharlestonNole
10-15-2008, 10:09 PM
I bought some of them. They were not on the market long before they were oop and the secondary market (ie ebay) were selling for ungodly amounts.

10-24-2008, 09:51 PM
you guys watch the new indy? What did you think?

CharlestonNole
10-24-2008, 09:53 PM
since Raiders is in my all time top five movies, i figured i would be disappointed, especially with all the hype.

and I was right....I enjoyed the movie a lot, but it just didn't have the right feel. they abandoned the 1930s serial feel for the 1950s scifi feel. too me, that's not indy...still a decent flick

rodmonster
10-24-2008, 09:55 PM
Was thinking i would feel the same.
We are till buying though

I HATE SNAKES!

dvdelf
10-24-2008, 09:56 PM
I think it suffered from that same problem a lot of sequels have, seems like there could have been more to it

CharlestonNole
10-24-2008, 09:59 PM
i also felt like this was the only one of the four that if indy wasn't in the ending, it wouldn't have mattered. he made a difference inthe first three....but he kinda of sat out the ending in this one

CharlestonNole
10-24-2008, 10:00 PM

CharlestonNole
10-24-2008, 10:07 PM
Batman and Robin should ahve never been made. I can at least stomach Batman Forever.

i really like the burton batman flicks.

dvdelf
10-24-2008, 10:08 PM
I agree with that.
I didnt get to see dark knight yet. I just cant take going to the movies anymore. When is the release dec.?

CharlestonNole
10-24-2008, 10:12 PM
dark knight release is in the first two weeks of dec.

tell me about theaters, i don't go very often anymore. iron man in may was the last straw....cell phones, screaming kids ( i don't mind kids going, but don't let them scream the whole time and run around like it is a playground).

i used to be able to take it, but now driving 40-50 miles to the nearest theater (gas prices) and then paying a fortune for a ticket it better be paradise lol

CharlestonNole
10-24-2008, 10:13 PM
i will not ruin the dark knight, but you will not be disappointed. i haven't seen a movie more that once in a theater since i was very young, but i saw that one three times....it's that good

dvdelf
10-24-2008, 10:20 PM
You dont have to tell me how bad it is. We went to see mrs. pettigrew lives for a day, middle of the week figured it would be dead. 10 minutes into the movie the old folks bus must have let off cause they all came in & walked in front of us talking loudly. Mind you we were in the back row in an empty theatre

Dont even get me started on hellboy 2, that one almost got me arrested

rodmonster
10-24-2008, 10:21 PM
Yeah - agreed - e have a big screen TV for a reason...
We only go to theater for kid movies now...

But at least i am not upset by missing a good movie...
Its expected....

I can no longer list just one....
I set my moded Xbox up with a bridge that i made out of a router....
I now have 1.5 terabytes of TV and movies to watch - and have been for days now...
=)
I can set up FOLDERS of Christmas shows and just let them run on the big screen (52 inch) TV upstairs....
ITS BEEN WONDERFUL!
Driving my wife crazy - but Noel and i LOVE it!!!!!
