View Full Version : A dry spell

Have we hit a dry spell here? No, I'm not talking about the number of days since I enjoyed a good cup of eggnog. I'm talking about the lack of posts. We are a streaky bunch (and I'm guessing that most of us are too old to be streaking.), talking up a storm for a couple days and then not saying anything for a couple more. Yes, I know school is starting and your kids need new clothes and you have been reading your son's required summer reading with him just so he is allowed back, but that's no excuse to ignore the important things. Come on, I have too much to say to be by myself! :) :D 8)

Elfworks, sorry to hear your sad news. Hope you are holding up ok.
Sheep: Sorry, I'm dealing with a huge project in Denver for the next couple of months and I have been there since late Monday and just barely rolled in about 20 minutes ago. I'm going to be in and out like this for a while. The best news? No travel next week, for the first time in about a month.

I pop in twice a day (on weekdays). I have noticed that the posts are getting a little slow. Maybe everybody has been out of the mood with this heat???

The heat sure can zap you into apathy. However, I always appreciate August heat because it makes me long for fall. I, too, am sorry about your friends, Elfworks. It seems that when it rains, it pours bad news. Have you folks noticed that even though you are out of town or grieving or suffering from heat related illnesses, you still check in at MMC? Truly a Christmas-crazy bunch. I'm proud to know you all. 8)

8-) It's a little odd that I have posted more in the last three weeks than I had since I joined. I've been busy off and on all summer, but when it's hot and humid outside - the computer room isn't a bad place to be. And posting about Christmas (I usually have snow in early November) makes it seem cooler.
I am sorry to hear about your friends too, Elfworks. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

The saying goes, "When the cat's away, the mice will play." The cat (Jeff) is away, but there's no playing going on. We have had a few stormy and cloudy days lately, so it's almost enough to make me think fall. Kids are in school, the Halloween stuff is starting to show up. It's beginning to look a lot like pre-Christmas!

I don't know about the rest of yall but when fall hits I am ready for thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving eve, were preparing food, the family is together. We get music channels through are cable company and one of the channels is 'Holidays & Happenings' on November 1 they start the Christmas music. Thanksgiving day comes and we watch the parade, eat the food, watch some football, and hang out with the family. Ofcourse the next day is black Friday, so my mom and aunt go shopping around 5 AM and usually don't come back till 11 PM. That saturday (If we haven't already) we put up the decorations. If we have started already we do the outdoor decorations that day. Sorry the post is so long I have not replied lately. and the last few weeks my Sunday schedule has been full after church so I haven't been able to make Sunday night chat. for those of you wondering, I was not able to go through the decorations, a friend is keeping stuff here, she is moving to an apartment. Hope yall are having a great summer. :family: :celebrate:

You must not be ready for fall yet. I just checked your weather forecast and it is supposed to be above 100º for the next four days. Sounds like dog days of summer to me. Have you noticed that toward the end of August/beginning of September the "color of the air" changes? The sunshine seems more golden than in the heat of summer. That is my signal to start digging out the fall stuff. I love that picture of the four bald guys eating Thanksgiving dinner. The turkey never gets smaller. That's a miracle we all hope for!

I'm soooo ready for fall. It's been dry here so the leaves are starting to fall. It's making me excited!! Yesterday we picked our first harvest of grapes. Most are not ready yet, but this means fall is almost here!

Speaking of a dry spell, I only got to reply to 4 topics today I think. I'm to the point that I will reply to everything until things start picking up speed. And speaking of picking up speed when do the forums start having more post?

:served: Our Thanksgiving is in early October when the majority of the trees are full of beautiful Fall colours.
I took my two youngest grandchildren for a very long walk in their tandem stroller on Saturday (in Ottawa) and my grandson noticed some colourful leaves on the ground. It was an old Maple tree losing leaves a bit early. So I whispered to them how many days there was until Christmas and they said I was a "silly Gran".
Don't worry with my influence, they are destined to become Christmas Fanatics too!
I love Christmas, but Autumn is my favourite season.
And the "dry spell" is beginning to find some moisture, eh?

What is the origin of your Thanksgiving, AMD?

08-22-2006, 01:16 PM
:carve: I was married on Thanksgiving weekend so it’s extra special for me. The date was no accident, we chose it because we both enjoy the Fall colours and Thanksgiving Monday is a STAT holiday so it provided relatives and friends from far away an extra day to travel home. Our gift table and guest book signing areas were adorned with Thanksgiving decor.
To answer your question: Much like the United States' Thanksgiving Day, the Canadian celebration includes parades (in larger cities) and festive meals, often including turkey and all the "fixings." At the heart of the celebration is the idea of giving thanks for the goodness of the season past. It stands to reason that our thanks for a bountiful harvest would occur before that of our neighbors since the cold weather generally hits our doorsteps before reaching the homes of the people living in the United States. (I know you don't all have snow, you don't all harvest either.)
The date of the celebration varied from 1872-1956. Finally in 1957 a proxlamation was made to fix the celebration of Thanksgiving in Canada to the second Monday in October.

Do you have a day celebrating the discovery of Canada, like Columbus Day?
AuntieMistletoeDear
08-23-2006, 05:36 PM
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y273/AuntieMistletoe/canada004CanadianFlag.gif For us, the celebration of Canada Day (formally Dominion Day) is the day we celebrate the Birth of Canada. We just celebrated 139 years of independence on July 1, 2006.
:family: If you ask me, I think the History of our Thanksgiving ceremonies should be considered as a day for celebrating Canada's birth.
The first celebration of Thanksgiving took place in 1578 by an English navigator named Martin Frobisher who held a formal ceremony in what is today's Newfoundland and gave thanks for surviving the long journey.
French settlers arrived around the same time with explorer Samuel de Champlain (the creek that runs behind my property was once explored via portage & canoe by Samuel and his group). They formed "the Order of Good Cheer" and shared their good fortune with Canadian Native Indians.
The next "Thanksgiving" in Canada was celebrated after the seven year war ended, in 1763, by the citizens of Halifax (in Nova Scotia), they held a special day of Thanksgiving.
 Now you have my wheels turning.

The creek behind my house was explored by my brother Bill. He discovered a blue frog, the only one I have ever seen.
