prior to my move from austin to dallas, and my sister's move back to texas from virginia, i usually had tday at my house for me my mom and some friends. my sister has four kids and my little apt isnt big enough for her clan, so tday will be at her house from now on, i guess. she has requested that i do the desserts this year. we will be 20 for dinner. as she will have some houseguests for a week, she has also requested that i do some snackies, too. i have basically decided on the 10 desserts and assorted snacks, but am always keen to hear other peoples favorites.
so, besdies pumpkin and pecan pies, what desserts do you HAVE TO HAVE or it isnt turkey day?
xo
ps. jeff, we need a turkey smilie!!

Well, you know me...some See's chocolate Turkeys always garnish the tables (and usually get "carved" by the kids) and small dishes of See's Toffeettes or Mint Truffles are appropriate.
You're in Texas, Elfworks. How can you serve anything else besides Pumpkin or Pecan pies? Especially pecan, if I remember right. Pecan pies only take a back seat to the Cowboys in Texas on Thanksgiving.

Friends of ours have started us on banana pudding for Thanksgiving. I don't think the holiday matters so much, really. They were over for Guy Fawlkes Day and we ate 'nana pudding then, too. And also for Road Kill Memorial Day, July 16th, etc.

I make pumpkin bread to eat for breakfast and to snack on while we are cooking. I can't think of a certain dessert we fix, I think it just depends on what everyone agrees on beforehand.

1. Squirting that stuff in your mouth is gross, unless it's your own private can. Makes nearly any pie EXCELLENT pie.
2. Can I be your sister, EW?

YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY
All of those desserts sound absolutely scrumptious!!!!! I love the thought of bourbon pecan pie. Pecan pie is one of my favorites. I had Pecan Pie flavored coffee this morning! The molasses pumpkin pie sounds good to. I'm quite impressed by your list of yummies EW. I think I might have to crash turkey day at your Mom's!!!
Please tell me more about the Chocolate Chestnut cake. I have never heard about that and it sounds like it would be right up my alley.
What are sandtarts???? Tell me PLEASE!!!
I will be making a pumpkin cake roll and probably my white chocolate cranberry cheesecake bars.
Speaking of pears and camembert....Did you ever cook pears in salt? I saw a recipe for this and I wondered if anyone has ever tried this.

i dont understand about the pears and salt question. you mean encased in salt like you can do fish??
sand tarts are aka mexican wedding cookies. this recipe was given me by my father's aunt mabel when i was 10 or so. first thing i ever made that didnt involve an easy-bake oven!
chestnut chocolate layer cake is from an old martha stewart living. i have just fiddled with the original recipe a bit. it is really pretty easy. i think you can probably find it on her website. it is basically a 2 layer chocolate cake with roasted and candied chestnuts. a layer of pastry cream between and ganache on top.
i love the pumpkin cake roll! i have a recipe from a bon appetit from 20 something years ago that is a little bit diff than the libby's one. call if you want that recipe.

figgy pudding is a steamed pudding. not pudding like we americans consider pudding to be... not custard-y.
it is delish. it is a lot like the traditional steamed plum pudding. i have a great recipe and if i get a second wind... will go pull the recipe given me my dear friend in GB and post it for yall.

And then they eat at least 3 plates of food when we actually sit down for dinner...lol.

On Turky Day, we always have Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Tarts and Fruit Salad - banana's, cherries, oranges, pinapple, grapes all encased in more whip cream than is reccomended for a daily intake. (My father argues that it should be considered dessert and that it's not a salad, but it's sereved at dinner, and he never wins the argument....)

Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle Recipe courtesy Paula Deen
Show: Paula's Home Cooking
Episode: Thanksgiving
2 (14-ounce) packages gingerbread mix
1 (5.1-ounce) box cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix
1 (30-ounce) can pumpkin pie filling
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 teaspoon ground cardamom or cinnamon
1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping
1/2 cup gingersnaps, optional
Bake the gingerbread according to the package directions; cool completely. Meanwhile, prepare the pudding and set aside to cool. Stir the pumpkin pie filling, sugar, and cardamom into the pudding. Crumble 1 batch of gingerbread into the bottom of a large, pretty bowl. Pour 1/2 of the pudding mixture over the gingerbread, then add a layer of whipped topping. Repeat with the remaining gingerbread, pudding, and whipped topping. Sprinkle of the top with crushed gingersnaps, if desired. Refrigerate overnight. Trifle can be layered in a punch bowl.

We always have the traditional pumpkin pie, but every year I make Pumpkin Rolls & Iced Pumpkin Cookies - YUMMY!!! I make a big batch of pumpkin cookies & they freeze well so I can get them out whenever I need them. I make a pumpkin roll for the fall party at the lake, one to bring into work & one to bring Thanksgiving...and sometimes other celebrations pop up, & I'll whip up another.

Cheesestraws.....ohhhhhh yummy! I haven't made them for a couple years. I am so hungry right now...I think I have to drop everything & go make some! Lol!! I will have to make some this year. The last time I made them, I used a spicy cheese in one batch (Sargento's Bistro Blends Shredded Cheddar & Monterey Jack Cheese with Tomato & Jalapeno Peppers) - they were a big hit!!
