Growing up in a very musical family, I can’t really make a distinction of which was my own first purchase. My mother and brother had records all laying all over the place by the time I came along!
I can remember buying the Beatles’ “White Album” and George Harrison’s “33 and a Third” lp. Even back then, I was digging through used record bins because I knew there had to be something else besides what the radio was shoveling. Johnny Ace, Joan Armatrading,, Marshall Crenshaw, Louis Jordan, and scores of others were waiting to be “discovered” and "rediscovered.”
Most of my early CD purchases were to replace some of my favorite vinyl albums. David Bowie’s “Pin Ups” comes to mind as one of those. The first digital download I bought was Spike Jones’ “Nutcracker Suite.” To date, I have bought only 25 digital downloads on an I-Tunes gift card. Call me old fashioned, but I like to hold a product in my hand from the time I pick it up in the shop to each time I get it out to play!
I'm still waiting for one of the real oldtimers to post their first 78 rpm purchase!

Oh, if we're talking albums now, the first I ever owned was Christmas With The Chipmunks, volume 1...
Then, a few years later, when I was seven, going on eight, I was due to have my tonsils removed and got an album called "Peter Ponsel and His Tonsils"... that record was GREAT and really helped reduce my fear of the upcoming procedure. I wish I could find a copy of it today.

Sounds like you had a copy of the album Song, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles, which came out on the Vee-Jay label in July 1964. That small company got to release the first Beatles album in the U.S. after Capitol Records passed on its option in the first half of 1963, when the Beatles were still unknown here. Vee-Jay repackaged the same group of songs with different album titles and artwork several times between January and October 1964, at the height of Beatlemania.
I just noticed that Paul didn't bother to put his cigarette down when he posed for the photo.

Aging myself here... (who isn't? *points finger and laughs* j/k)
The first tape in my possession was a participation award for doing a holiday chorus concert. It was a Flinstone's Christmas Carol tape. I'll never forget Fred's laugh.
My first single ever bought was a tape of 2Pac "Keep Ya Head Up" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW--IGAfeas). Still classic. Thank you, newspaper route.
My first CD was technically The Beavis & Butt-Head Experience. haha My father and I were big on the show. He got the album through some mail deal (freebie I think) and gave it to me. For the record, it was less than stellar, but I adored the thought and verily did happily stomach "I Got You Babe (Cher & Mike Judge)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGsZ2Xtq37w).
My first CD ever bought, which was thoroughly shared among my friends as well, was TLC's CrazySexyCool (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC9FsbdeJmM) album. (Holy cow. I just now learned that was André 3000. Should have realized it; it's so obvious! heh I guess it was love from the start.) I still know every timeless word by heart.
And if we fast forward to digital, I'm pretty sure my first MP3 was CAKE "Sheep Go to Heaven" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0mx5ERj1eI). Another classic.
