Ok, let's find out what everyone's favorite Christmas treat is.

I love ribbon candy. I look forward to it every year. Yummy and sweet.

How about YOU???

there isnt enough time left in this day to post my favorites! if it is traditionally served during the thanksgiving to new years time period, i eat it!! unless it involves mushroom, shellfish or licorice - 3 things i do not eat!
i couldnt even begin to try and pick ONE favorite tho a friend of mine makes a cranberry liquor that is right up there!!!

and, of course, eggnog, tho i make my own and occasionally indulge during the non-holiday times.

and ginger bread. tho i make my own and occasionally indulge during the non-holiday times.

truth be told, i tend to make whatever i want any time of the year. with the exception of the cran liquor.
i made some eggnong cookies the other day. and made gingerbread last week.

no one fave. i love it all and i indulge when i want!!!

Holiday Shortbread Tidbits

Heat oven to 325F

1/2 C butter, softened

1/4 C sugar

1/4 tsp almond extract

1 1/4 C all-purpose flour

1/4 tsp salt

4 tsp multi-colored nonpareils

Line 8 inch square baking pan with plastic food wrap, leaving 1 inch overhang. Set aside. Combine butter, sugar and almond extract in medium bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Reduce speed to low; add flour and salt. Beat until well mixed. Stir in nonpareils.

Knead mixture 4 to 5 times in bowl until dough forms a ball. Pat dough evenly into prepared pan. Use plastic wrap to lift dough from pan. Cut dough into 1/2 inch squares. Gently place squares 1/2 inch apart onto ungreased cookie sheets; discard plastic wrap. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes or until bottoms just begin to brown.

TIP - Avoid last minute holiday hassle - make these sweet tidbits before the holiday season. Store between sheets of wax paper in container with tight-fitting lid; freeze for up to 2 months.

I'm with Elf, I love it all (even shellfish and licorice, but not mushrooms!) I'm so ready for the eggnog to be in the stores! I try and not to make too many Christmasy foods outside of the holidays because I don't want to get tired of it. I will, however, make something every now and then.

i am actually allergic to mushies and shellfish, but i just outright dont like licorice!

and you know what... cranking the ac in the middle of august and having some gingerbread can works some serious wonders on the perception of heat outside!!

Sad to say, I never really got into the eggnog thing. Might have something to do with the fact that I'm not a big fan of milk and it comes in a carton like milk. Call me silly...

then you must make your own! no carton involved and real eggnog doesnt have any milk in it. just good cream! lots and lots of cream!!

Shellfish stuffed with mushrooms in a nice licorice sauce. Actually, my mom's Christmas cookies, cut from her ancient cutters in the shapes of a bell, Santa (standing rooster!), a wreath and a candy cane, all topped with too much icing and those little hard things that look like pearls and do not digest.

I am forever greatful for lowfat eggnog! I prefer the real stuff, but since I can drink it by the gallon, I have to play it safe.

My homemade fruitcake is another. (homemade means more cherries, less of the little, bitter green citron pieces, soaked in apple brandy.)

And I can't leave out Nissu, or Pulla, a Finnish yeast bread made with cardamom. --Hot from the oven, covered with butter.

A pot of Russian tea simmering on the back of the stove adds just the right finishing touch.

It's a blessing to live so close to family. My grandmother came to live with us for a little while before she moved into a home. She had the best stories.

my mommy's sweet potato pie and our family's pound cake. My grandmother (my dad's mother-my parents are divorced but my mom and grandma remained very close) got the pound cake recipe from her mother, then passed it down to my mom. My mom still has the same paper plate she copied it down on almost thirty years ago. My grandma passed away a few years ago, but my mom keeps the paper plate out every time she bakes the cake, not really looking at, it's kind of like a respect thing I think.

So many yummy things that you almost never see outside of the holiday season, sadly. My Mom always used to make these great cookies....pineapple-coconut and she only made them at Christmas, now that she's retired, I;m hoping she makes some, this year. :D Grandma's graham cracker pies....she does occasionally make them other times, but not nearly often enough! I love all the cookies, candy and pastries you don't normally have throughout the rest of the year...too many to name!

My favorite Christmas treat was made by my mom who passed away a long time ago. She made these coconut candies shaped like a strawberry and rolled in red sugar for the berry and green sugar for the cap. She would stick an almond sliver in the top for the stem. They glistened and gleemed and when you are a kid seemed almost magical. I haven't made them in years.

I love these cookies. They are easy to make and very festive looking. Try them!

Stained Glass Cookies

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup honey
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tsp. Baking Powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
5 rolls (1-1/4 oz. each) ring-shaped hard candies

BEAT butter, sugar, honey, egg and vanilla in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; mix well. Cover. Refrigerate at least 2 hours.
PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Place dough on lightly floured surface; roll out to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with 2-1/2- to 3-inch floured cookie cutters. Trace smaller version of each cookie shape on dough, leaving 1/2- to 3/4-inch border of dough. Cut out and remove dough from center of each shape; set aside. Place cutouts on baking sheets covered with foil. Shape remaining dough into ball; re-roll to make additional cutouts.
CRUSH each color of candy separately between 2 layers of wax paper with mallet. Spoon crushed candy inside centers of cutouts.
BAKE 6 to 8 minutes or until candy is melted and cookies are lightly browned. Cool cookies completely before removing from foil.

Some of my favorites are my mom's home made fudge, peanutbutter cookies with either a Hershey's kiss or Mini Recess's PB Cups in the middle.
