I just recieved an email from a friend who gets steamed about Happy Holidays replacing Merry Christmas. Sam's club has decided to use Holidays instead of Christmas in their advertising this year. Want some Holiday Ribbon? You can buy it at Sam's Club. If you need Christmas Ribbon, you will have to look else where. Sad. :-(

I'd like a spool of your best red and green striped ribbon with an occasional image of an overweight guy in a red suit, please.

I recieved an email from the American Family Assocaition on that a few days ago. I sighned a petition, however I can not find the link @ this time. I'll try to find it and post it. I must say this is a sad day when we can't say Merry Christmas during the Christmas season. :(

Booo! I was watching a rerun of SNL last night where they made fun of the whole holiday/Christmas thing. I also remember Jim Carrey making a joke about it on Leno last December (gotta love that)! I have a beauty boutique and darned if I'll ever be taking the word Christmas off any of my marketing. And boo to any scrooge who doesn't like it, lol!

Dont see what the big deal is..its holiday time, lots of festive stuff happening, so Happy Holidays is fine by me!

Agreed. As I said many times, the Holiday season is about THREE holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's.
Organizations like the AFA and Focus On The Family just don't get it. If they don't like Happy Holidays, they can just cover their eyes next time they get their Christmas/Holiday ads/catalogs in the mail.

Unfortunately this seems to be more the rule that the exception these days. I figure that the best that I can do is voice my displeasure with my wallet. Companies like Sam's/Walmart and others will have to get the message sooner or later if they lose money from familes that see this attempt at secularism as an insult to our beliefs.

I will never understand why people have to complain or even have a problem with a kind, NICE thoughtful greeting and go after companies and people for saying it. Its seems so worthless to ever argue such a thing. Ridiculous. And those strong religious groups go after everything and everyone. Would you rather people say, go to hell...and a happy new year!? I mean seriously. Its not JUST Christmas time and for many, is also not a religious holiday and is for some what started as a Winter Solstice.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS.....in other words, Merry Christmas, Xmas, Festivus, Happy Bday Baby Jesus, Winter Solstice, Happy Hanukkah, Chanukah, Yule, Kwanzaa, Thanksgiving for some, New Year and anything else I’m leaving out. Its Holiday time and a time to wish all a Happy Holidays. Seriously, get over it. This is being over analyzed and nit picked way too much.

I think we should let this discussion go, because neither side is listening to the other & both make good points

Well, why don't we say that the Holiday season is about FIVE holidays, then (instead of three)?
Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year's.
There, point made, people. Now, we should all be able to get along.

We already get along pretty good, even with differences of opinion. Unity is not molding all beliefs into one conglomerate. It is acceptance of the differences without judgment.

Personally, I don't care what a big company/corporation calls Christmas. Actually, I don't care what anyone calls Christmas...whether they want to call it a "holiday season" or anything else. I know what I call it, I know how important it is to me and those I love, and as long as no one tries to get me to call it anything different or celebrate it differently, I'm fine. They can call it what they want, it's not going to make me enjoy my Christmas any less.

I agree with ReineV, nobody or no company will ever change my way of looking at Christmas. 8-)

You're right Ervserver. I agree that no company can change the way that any of us feel about Christmas or what we call it. The term holiday, no matter how some try, will never replace the word Christmas...it seems that its just another way to wish someone good will. Those of us who look to preserve the tradition and meaning of Christmas....already are.

It's quite sad. The whole purpose of Christmas is to celebrate the Christ child. It is to celebrate that He has come to save us. I don't see many Jewish holidays creating such an ordeal or see many people trying to change what those holidays are about. If people have such a problem with what Christmas REALLY stands for then maybe they should just create their own holiday where it's just about giving gifts and call it something else. But they should leave Christmas alone and allow it to mean something wonderful for the rest of us who love the special day for what it is really about.
Geez! :-?

....but to me it doesn't matter, "Merry Christmas", "Happy Holiday", "Merry Yule"....the idea, the thought and feelings behind the greetings/sayings are all the same, good will to whoever you say it to, and that's all that matter to me. So, if someone came up to me and said, "Happy Holidays' I would say it right back. =) If the store wants to change their greetings and or titles, that's fine with me. It will all mean the same whether it's a holiday ribbon or christmas stocking.

welcome to america where people have the right to tell you what to say & do. They dont mind infringing on your rights, but if somebody did it to them there would be a huge blow up

I always say Merry Christmas no matter where I'm shopping and I even get a Merry Christmas reply most of the time.
It is sad that our traditions are always under attack and we are constantly being told we have to change to accomodate others. Something is very wrong with this picture.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And welcome to America where people have the right to ignore what they think is something offensive (said and done).
Just be glad I'm against the Religious Right, and let it be with that.

I don't ever recall anyone being offended by Merry Christmas when I was a kid, seems like this all brewed up in the last few years.
There was a lot of outburst for awhile on professional sports teams using names associated with Indian and Native Americans but that has seemed to subside. Maybe this Merry Christmas thing will do the same.

Good observation, Erv. It's like the summer before 9/11 when shark attacks were all the rage. They're still attacking but it doesn't make the news. Maybe we will move on. Let's hope so.

What are they gonna do if you DO say it? Arrest you?
"Officer arrest that woman!"
"What did she do?"
"She wished me a Merry Christmas!"
*gasp* :P

I suppose if you are a employee they could fire you. That wouldn't be an issue for me as I would quit as soon as they told me what to say.

I'd follow that up with a couple of other things they dont want their employees to say

I went there today (as well as Wal-Mart), and they had both Happy Holidays AND Merry Christmas.
So, Religious Right, look out! You re-start the so-called War On Christmas, and you're gonna PAY!

AS for not saying Merry Christmas, I work every christmas from the 2nd week of November to CHristmas eve, morning noon and night, at the Santa set in my town. You wouldnt believe the people we come in contact with. This particular posting reminds me of one of my favorites. It was the week Before Christmas and It was very busy, I was ringing out a customer and I said Goodnight and Have a Very Merry Christmas! and to that the woman exploded in anger!! EXPLODED! Chastising me for not being politically correct. She hooted and Hollered at the top of her voice. Her Rant went on for what seemed like forever. She finally asked me, very loudly "Now what if I was jewish? DO you know that I would be offeneded.?? ANd just as loudly did I reply---
IF YOU WERE JEWISH YOU WOULDNT HAVE JUST HAD YOUR PICTURE TAKEN WITH SANTA CLAUSE!!! and I turned around to about 150 people just clapping! It was a great moment IN the Battle for Christmas!! 8-)
