"Christmas in Rockefeller Center" will air on Wednesday, December 3 (8-9 p.m. ET).

Don't know who's scheduled. The news blurb only says:

"Christmas in Rockefeller Center" is a star-studded, live broadcast from Rockefeller Center in New York City and celebrates the lighting of the world's most famous Christmas tree. The special will include a popular musical lineup celebrating the current hits and favorite holiday music from the world of entertainment.

Love Christmas at Rockefeller Center. :) I think it was last year that I watched the live feed of the tree being loaded into the square. It was really rather interesting to watch them bringing in the huge tree like that.

wnbc.com has a webcam on during the tree lighting ceremony.

Of course this will not be the actual telecast, but it's live and gives a different perspective of the event.

The tree arrives tomorrow at Rockefeller!!

NYC's Rockefeller Center tree is spruce from Connecticut

Associated Press
11/11/09 7:55 AM PST

EASTON, CONN. — The star attraction at New York's Rockefeller Center this Christmas will be a 76-foot Norway spruce from Connecticut.
Crews cut down the 10-ton tree Wednesday morning at the Easton home of schoolteacher Maria Corti.
The spruce will be hoisted by a crane onto a trailer and transported about 50 miles to New York City. The tree will be erected at the center Thursday.
Marketing director Keith Douglas says Rockefeller Center does aerial searches for a Christmas tree and spotted Corti's spruce as a good candidate.
After Christmas, the tree will be donated to Habitat For Humanity to use as wood for a home in Connecticut.
Last year's Rockefeller Center tree was a 72-foot-tall Norway spruce from Hamilton, N.J. The owners had used it as their first Christmas tree in 1931.

Where's the webcam??

NBC Universal and The Arbor Day Foundation Team Up to Add More Green to the 77th Annual Live Holiday Celebration with an Interactive Viewer Experience

NEW YORK - November 17, 2009 - NBC continues to roll out the holiday festivities on Wednesday, December 2 (8-9 p.m. ET/PT) with a dazzling display of musical talent and the lighting of the world's most famous Christmas tree during the 12th annual "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" telecast. Co-hosted by NBC stars Jane Krakowski ("30 Rock (http://www.nbc.com/30-rock/videos/episodes/?__source=news&apl=true)") and Zachary Levi ("Chuck (http://www.nbc.com/chuck)") and broadcast in high definition, the star-studded tree lighting celebration will feature Michael Bublé, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow, The Roots, Shakira, and The Radio City Rockettes performing a mix of current hits and holiday classics from beautifully ornamented stages around Rockefeller Center in New York City.

One of the season's most treasured traditions, the 77th annual tree lighting extravaganza will also include a performance by co-host Krakowski with The Roots and appearances by Taylor Schilling (NBC's "Mercy"), James Tupper (NBC's "Mercy") and Brian Williams ("NBC Nightly News").

This year, NBC Universal through its "Green is Universal initiative," is happy to work with the Arbor Day Foundation to "Text For Your Tree." Every half hour throughout the national broadcast viewers will be prompted to text NBCU to have a tree planted on their behalf. The trees will be planted by the Arbor Day Foundation, and underwritten by their partners. Additionally, the "Text For Your Tree" promotion will be extended online with an interactive site on both arborday.org and greenisuniversal.com sites. This partnership is expected to drive awareness for the environment and the Arbor Day Foundation - and help to get up to 500,000 trees planted.

The tradition of the Rockefeller Christmas tree dates back to the Great Depression. First erected in 1933, the tree was decked with 700 lights and placed in front of the then eight-month-old RCA Building, now the GE Building. The Christmas tree gathering was enhanced in 1936 with the opening of the Rockefeller Plaza outdoor ice-skating pond. NBC-TV televised the first tree lighting in 1951 on "The Kate Smith Show" and as part of the nationwide "Howdy Doody" television show from 1953-55.

Prior to the network special, WNBC, NBC's New York flagship station, and some other NBC stations will broadcast an additional live hour of the special (7-8 p.m. ET). "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" is produced by Brad Lachman Productions with Lachman serving as executive producer. Bill Bracken is producer.

It is always aired on NBC I do believe. THere will be a live webcast as soon as they get the tree up and in the big box like structure. I watch it a few times a day from the time it gets set up to when it gets lit. I have a post on this and will be putting up the links as soon as I get them.

New York - November 3, 2010 - NBC will celebrate the lighting of the world's most famous Christmas tree once again with a live broadcast from Rockefeller Center in New York City on Tuesday, November 30 (8-9 p.m. ET/PT). The star-studded holiday special will feature performances by Susan Boyle, Mariah Carey, Charice, Sheryl Crow, Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban, Katherine Jenkins, Annie Lennox, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Simpson and The Radio City Rockettes with a mix of current hits and holiday classics.

The tradition of the Rockefeller Christmas tree dates back to the Great Depression. First erected in 1933, the inaugural tree was decked with 700 lights and placed in front of the then eight-month-old RCA Building, now the GE Building. The Christmas tree gathering was enhanced in 1936 with the opening of the Rockefeller Plaza outdoor ice-skating pond. NBC-TV televised the tree lighting for the first time in 1951 on "The Kate Smith Show" and as part of the nationwide "Howdy Doody" television show from 1953-55.
Prior to this year's primetime telecast, WNBC, NBC's New York flagship station, and other nationwide affiliates will broadcast an additional live hour of the special (7-8 p.m. ET). "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" is produced by Brad Lachman Productions with Lachman serving as executive producer. Bill Bracken is producer.
ABOUT THE HOSTS:
Natalie Morales joined "Today" as a National Correspondent in February 2006 and was named co-anchor of the third hour of "Today" in March 2008. Morales also serves as a National Correspondent for all NBC News platforms including "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams," "Dateline NBC," and MSNBC. Prior to joining "Today," Morales was an anchor and correspondent at MSNBC from March 2002 to February 2006. While working for NBC News, Morales has reported on and contributed to several major breaking news stories, including the 2009 presidential inauguration; the Southern California wildfires; the Minneapolis bridge collapse; Hurricane Katrina and the recovery efforts; the Tsunami disaster; the death of Pope John Paul II; the 2004 presidential election; the war in Iraq; and the Columbia Shuttle explosion. Additionally, Hispanic Magazine named her one of the "Top Hispanics to Watch" in 2005 and one of the "Top Trendsetters" of 2003. She currently resides in New Jersey with her husband and two sons.
Al Roker has been the weather and feature reporter on NBC News' "Today" since January 1996. Since July 2009 he has also been co-host of the morning show "Wake Up with Al" on the Weather channel. New York magazine has twice named Roker Best Weatherman. He came to WNBC-TV as a weekend weathercaster in December 1983 from WKYC-TV, the NBC television affiliate in Cleveland. Roker began his broadcasting career while still in college by landing a job as a weekend weatherman WTVH-TV in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1974. After graduation he moved on to weathercasting jobs in Washington, D.C. (1976-1978) and Cleveland, Ohio (1978-1983). He is a recipient of the American Meteorological Society's prestigious Seal of Approval and has been a pioneer in the use of computer graphics for weathercasting. Roker is a bestselling author with four acclaimed books to his credit. This will be his 24th year hosting "Christmas in Rockefeller Center."
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
First discovered on "Britain's Got Talent," Susan Boyle became an instant internet sensation with over 500 million views on YouTube. Her debut album, "I Dreamed A Dream," went from the most pre-ordered album in Amazon's global history to the fastest selling female debut album of all time in a matter of weeks. Boyle will be releasing her second album, "The Gift," on November 9th, with highlights including delightful renditions of the traditional hymn "Away In A Manger" and a cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over."
"Merry Christmas II You" is Mariah Carey's 13th studio album, and follows up her worldwide multi-million-selling "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel" (released September 2009), her multi-platinum "E=MC" (2008), and worldwide 10 million selling "The Emancipation Of Mimi" (2005). "The Emancipation Of Mimi" generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's. Three years later, Mariah surpassed Elvis when "Touch My Body" (from "E=MC") became her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. The success of "E=MC" brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 200 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the most successful female recording artist in history.
Born and raised in the Philippines, Charice found her singing voice at a young age. By age 7, she was supporting her family through her earnings from singing competitions. In 2007, a web-savvy fan began posting a series of Charice's performances on YouTube, including appearances on the Filipino talent show "Little Big Star" and the popular South Korean talent show "Star King." She instantly became an internet sensation, earning herself appearances on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "Oprah." She has since released her self-tilted debut album, which recently reached #1 in Japan.
Nine-time Grammy Award-winning musician Sheryl Crow recently released her seventh album, "100 Miles From Memphis." For the Missouri native, the album is a statement of purpose, featuring eleven songs that are characterized more by capturing a classic spirit than by imitating any specific style. Crow has sold 16 million albums in the United States and 35 million albums worldwide. She currently resides on a farm outside Nashville, Tennessee with her two sons.
Jackie Evancho, the 10-year old soprano prodigy whose performance on "America's Got Talent" won the hearts of millions and brought her into the national spotlight, will release her debut recording, "O Holy Night" on November 16. Since appearing on "America's Got Talent" Jackie's accumulated more than 30 million combined YouTube views and was the #1 Hot Google Search this past summer. Jackie first began singing at the age of 7 after watching "The Phantom of the Opera" on DVD. She launched her own YouTube channel and started serious vocal lessons when she was 8 years old. A Pittsburgh native, Jackie performed at local talent shows, going on to perform at high profile events including singing the National Anthem at Pittsburgh Pirates games.
Josh Groban returns to the "Christmas in Rockefeller" stage for the second time in his extensive career. An international superstar, the Los Angeles native has sold more than 25 million albums and DVDs worldwide, and filled arenas from North America and Europe to Australia and the Philippines. He was the best-selling recording artist of 2007 thanks to sales of his double-platinum 2006 album "Awake" and his blockbuster 5-time platinum Christmas album, "Noel." After teaming with super-producer Rick Rubin, Groban will be releasing his fifth studio album, "Illuminations" on November 15. This is a very personal album for Groban, who co-wrote 11 of the 13 songs on the collection including "Hidden Away," which Groban co-wrote with Dan Wilson.
Katherine Jenkins, known as "the young woman from the little place with the huge voice," hails from the tiny village of Neath in the Welsh Valley. With multi-platinum recordings along with critical acclaim and awards that span decades, Jenkins has become more than a household name in the United Kingdom. Not one to limit herself to opera or her classical/crossover, she loves to perform all types of music. Katherine's US debut album "Believe" was produced by 15-time Grammy-winning star-maker and hit man David Foster for 143/Warner Bros. Records.
Annie Lennox is the most successful female British artist in pop music history. She has amassed sales of more than 78 million albums worldwide in her 26-year career, both as a member of the groundbreaking Eurythmics and as a solo artist. Her towering achievements also include 34 hit singles, four Grammy Awards, 11 Brit Awards and five Ivor Novello Awards. The superstar has also won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. In addition to her music, Lennox devotes her energy to The SING Campaign, a humanitarian organization Lennox founded to raise awareness and support for the AIDS/HIV pandemic in Africa.
Born in Australia, Kylie Minogue released her first single, a remake of the 1962 Little Eva hit "Locomotion," in 1987. The song hit #1 in Australia and remained in the top spot for seven weeks, becoming the biggest Australian single of the 80's. Two decades later, Kylie achieved the record for the most played female artist on UK radio over the last 20 years. Since then she has released eleven studio albums, two live CDs, eight live concert DVD's, plus her "Greatest Hits" and the "Ultimate Kylie" double album and multiple video packages. Minogue's latest album "Aphrodite" became Kylie's fifth #1 album in the UK which made Kylie the first solo artist in the history of the UK charts to have a #1 album in four different decades. Around the globe "Aphrodite" debuted in the top 10 in thirteen different countries. The album has produced two consecutive U.S. Billboard Club hits with "All The Lovers" and "Get Outta My Way." Kylie's "Aphrodite - Les Folies 2011" world tour begins in Denmark on February 19th and is expected to hit the U.S. this spring.
Born and raised outside of Dallas, Texas, Jessica Simpson has taken the music, fashion and entertainment industries by storm and become an international media darling. She made her mark in the music industry with her RIAA-certified double platinum 1999 debut, "Sweet Kisses," and has since released five additional full-length solo albums including the quadruple platinum "In This Skin" and her latest effort, "Do You Know." She soon began appearing on television in "That 70's Show," her MTV reality show "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica," and her recent VH1 docu-series, "Jessica Simpson's: The Price of Beauty." Simpson has found additional success as a designer with her Jessica Simpson Collection and her fragrance "Fancy." An enthusiastic philanthropist, she also serves as the International Youth Ambassador for Operation Smile.

The tree was hoisted into place today on a midtown Manhattan plaza, next to a skating rink.
At the time, the temperature was inching into the upper 50s.
The tree was donated by Peter and Stephanie Acton of Mahopac, N.Y. It was cut down Thursday in the backyard of their Putnam County home.
Peter Acton, a New York City firefighter, was a 9/11 responder. The Rockefeller Center tree scout discovered the family's spruce this year, on Sept. 11.
The lighting ceremony is Nov. 30.

I know at 8pm on NBC is the lighting of the tree, 8pm on ABC is the Grinch and 8pm on CBS is Rudolph!! I think Shrek the Halls is on at 8:30 on ABC. I've decided that since TBS runs the Grinch a lot to skip recording that show so that I can record the other ones.

Not necessarily for New Year's Eve as it seems to hectic in the area, but just be there for a weekend in early Dec just to see the tree in person.

Hopefully one day.

Hard to believe in just a few weeks, it will be in place getting decorated.

An evergreen in the tiny town of Mifflinville, Pa., was picked to be the 2011 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree

In a rural town of only 2,500 people, it’s impossible to keep a secret about a 75-foot-tall Pennsylvania spruce that’s about to become an international celebrity.
An evergreen now under 24-hour police protection in the tiny town of Mifflinville, Pa., has been picked to be the 2011 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, the Daily News has learned.
Sources told The News the towering tree at the corner of Fair St. and Kline Rd., 160 miles west of New York City, will be the first from the Keystone State selected for the prestigious holiday duty.
“It’s a great honor for the town of Mifflinville,” Mifflinville Town Supervisor George Welliver (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/George+Welliver) said Monday when told by a News reporter of the tree’s destination.
“We are a great little town and maybe this will cause more people to stop by,” Welliver (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/George+Welliver) said.
Townfolk said the tree’s spectacular fate has been a badly kept secret that some are still vigorously maintaining.
“I can’t tell you how foggy it is outside,” the owner of the tree said Monday when contacted by The News. All questions were referred to Rockefeller Center publicist Iva Benson (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Iva+Benson).“At this point, we are not confirming which tree will be the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree,” Benson (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Iva+Benson) said. Police Chief Bill Richendrfer (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Bill+Richendrfer) was just as mum when asked why his officers were guarding the tree around the clock. “All I can say is that someone has agreed to pay the township to watch the tree around the clock until Thursday,” Richendrfer said. “I’m not going to say who or why.”
A cop guarding the tree Monday acted as if it were a dignitary. “I can’t comment, but don’t go near the tree,” said the officer, even as gawkers showed up to snap photos. If the tree were a movie star, Guy Broadt, 64, would have asked for an autograph.“I wanted to get a good look before it hit the Big Apple,” said Broadt of nearby Espy as he took pictures of the spruce. John Broscious (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/John+Broscious), 70, who lives across the street from the tree, said rumors began swirling about six months ago. “Soon after a bunch of people showed up taking pictures of the tree,” Broscious said. “Then last summer, these large tank trucks began coming up here spraying all kinds of chemicals on the tree.”
In recent days, a team of arborists arrived and wrapped every branch as if getting it ready for transporation. “It was quite a job,” Broscious said. “It took them three days.”
The tree will be lit in 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights and crowned with a Swarovski crystal star when it is finally unveiled Nov. 30 in Rockefeller Plaza.

Cheers!!

The Tree is on it's way!!

Every year Debra Keller would take her granddaughters to New York City to take in the holiday traditions -- going to a show, having lunch at their favorite restaurants, shopping and a visit to the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.
This year when they visit Rockefeller Center, it will be their own tree.
The 74-foot tall Norway spruce that once provided a shade and a scenic sight on their lawn in Pennsylvania will become the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree for 2011.
"To be honest it won't be sad to see the tree go," said Keller, 56, in a statement. "We just feel honored that the tree was chosen and will be enjoyed by so many people when it's sitting in the middle of Rockefeller Center."
The iconic Christmas tree is expected to arrive on a flatbed truck Friday morning and will grace Rockefeller Center in Manhattan when it's officially erected at the end of November.
The Norway spruce weighing approximately 10 tons was cut down Wednesday morning in Mifflinville, Pennsylvania, and hoisted by a huge crane onto a 115-foot-long trailer where it will be driven to Manhattan. The 46-foot-wide tree will be raised at Rockefeller Center Friday morning.
The tree, which is approximately 75 years old, was first spotted by the Rockefeller Center team during a routine drive down Interstate-80. Rockefeller Center's head gardener saw the tree out of the corner of his eye from the driver's seat.
The tree made an immediate impression standing tall on the lawn of Debra Keller's 79 year-old mother Nancy's house where she has lived since 1969.

Line-up announced for NBC Special:

The original pop star, Tony Bennett, will be showing Justin Bieber how it's done when they both perform at NBC's annual live Christmas tree-lighting ceremony, 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center' later this month.

The roster of big name performers announced by the network spans not only generations, but also genres, with singers Michael Bublé, Cee Lo Green, Faith Hill, Carole King, Katharine McPhee and 'The Voice' (http://www.aoltv.com/show/voice/8449661) winner Javier Colon performing a mix of current hits and holiday classics.

NBC announced that the hour-long special on November 30 will be hosted by the 'Today Show's Al Roker and Savannah Guthrie and will -- natch -- also feature seasonal high-kickers, The Radio City Rockettes. Prior to the primetime telecast, WNBC and other NBC affiliates (check your local listings) will also air an additional live hour of the special.

This first hour will feature performances by all the show's stars and also a special performance by Megan Hilty, star of the upcoming NBC musical drama 'Smash.' (http://www.aoltv.com/tag/Smash/)

The Rock Center Christmas tree has been an annual staple of the festive season since the complex was opened in midtown Manhattan in 1933, and NBC has televised the tree-lighting ceremony every year since 1951, when it made its debut on 'The Kate Smith Show.' This year's tree, which will remain lit until New Year's Day, is a Norway Spruce measuring 74 feet high and 46 feet in diameter, and weighing-in at 10 tons.

November 28th - is that the earliest it's ever aired? Looking forward to it!

Not sure, but I believe it's been on at least this early before. With the 22nd being the absolute earliest U.S. Thanksgiving can fall on in any given year*, we will get almost an extra full week of Christmas programming this season.

The last few years Rudolph has been on the day after Thanksgiving, so it may be scheduled for Nov 23 this year!

* for our non-American friends, U.S. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, so whenever November 1st lands on a Thursday, which it does this year, it will be a year in which Thanksgiving is at its earliest.

Yeah, that last week of November is always crammed full of Christmas programming...I'd rather they save some of them for mid-December, not because it's too early for Christmas specials (it's NEVER too early!) but because it seems like we get to Mid-December and they're not airing any classic Christmas cartoons anymore (they've already aired all the classics in late November)...not sure why that is, maybe I'm just overlooking them.

Anyway, to bring this back on topic, I used to look at the lighting of the Rockefeller Christmas Tree TV Special as the start of Christmas programming on TV...nowadays, it seems like it's just one program in a week of Christmas specials (the airing of Rudolf included).

CBS has always aired Rudolph around Dec 1st - but I noticed that if one station has a holiday program on, the others match on the same date, which is annoying really. You can't watch two things at the same time without having to DVR one and most replay later on in Dec anyways.

Cheers!!

The Rockefeller Tree has arrived!

Crews use a crane to hoist a 80 ft. tall, 50 ft. diameter, 10-ton Norway Spruce tree from its base at the home of Joseph Balku in Flanders, N.J., on Nov. 13. The tree was laid onto a flatbed truck and transported to New York City where it is this year's Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

A day ago Joseph Balku’s Norway Spruce stood 80-feet tall outside his home in Flanders, N.J. Today it is 50 miles away, the new holiday centerpiece of New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza (also home to NBC News). Over the next two weeks, the tree will be decorated with more than 30,000 multi-colored lights on 5-miles of wire. The 80-year old tree has added meaning, it has been dubbed a “Sandy survivor,” coming from an area affected by the recent storm that wreaked havoc across the Northeast (http://slideshow.nbcnews.com/slideshow/weather/hurricane-sandy-49596252/). According to AP:
Balku says he watched the tree, which weighs 10 tons and is 50 feet in diameter, as it swayed in the backyard of his Mount Olive property. Balku says it had been bundled for protection. He lost two other trees and just got electricity back over the weekend.
The tree’s arrival in Midtown serves as an unofficial kick-off to the quickly approaching holiday season. This year’s tree-lighting ceremony will be held on Nov. 28, featuring Cee Lo Green and Mariah Carey (among many other talents).

Cheers!!
