White Elephant Gift: Definition - a gift that consists of an item that you DO NOT want anymore - may be silly or serious or funny or outrageous!

We do a potluck and give White Elephant gifts. Sometimes people have adored the present, laughed themself silly, or just just groaned, as in "Where is the nearest donation box?"

I'd love to know some experiences people have had with White Elephant gifts.

Every year my family passes around a bowling pin to one another.

My brother-in-law once got me a Toxic Avenger VHS tape... somehow thinking that if I liked one cartoon super hero thing, I'd like 'em all... he was wrong... cheesy

I gave a cheesehead hat away once. Big mistake. It turned out to be very popular and everyone wanted it, so I worried that I should have kept it.

Best: a big fish pillow - another one of those gifts that everyone wanted
Worst: a "fart spoon" - it was shaped like a ladder so when baking beans, the farts would leave the pot up the ladder. Ewww.:o

One year my uncle gave my dad a rubber chicken with a restaurant gift certificate stuffed inside of it. The rubber chicken laid around in the basement until it went sticky and gooey. The gift certificate was appreciated, though.

an old maid card game, given to me by my sister in law with instructions to make sure to read the bottom of the box which says "no one wants to get stuck with the old maid" I found it anything but funny since I am not married.

At a previous work place they had a "buddy - Santa" and two people were paired to be each others Santa, they paired me with a woman who I didn't much care for (I am sure she did not care for me either). I took the time and got her a gift I knew she would enjoy, she loved reading I got her a trilogy she had wanted (we had a $50.00 max). She got me a necklace, a plastic bead necklace. I must state that I where a necklace I never take off a silver heart, she did know this as I was aked why I always have it on and I explained why. It is not so much that she gave me something without any thought, she actually said it, oh I forgot to get you something, so I pulled this out of my "junk jewelry". That hurt.
