View Full Version : Your Tree

Does your tree have a particular color scheme/theme? Or is it eclectic?

Our tree used to be very eclectic. We had all of our handmade ornaments on the tree and we used every color on the rainbow, but since my sisters and I are "grown ups" (I'm the youngest at 22, the middle is 31, the oldest is 33) my mom no longer has an eclectic tree. My mom owned a decorating business and used to decorate peoples houses and trees during Christmastime. So now, she uses her talents to plan and decorate her own house for Christmas. She puts our old home made ornaments up on display, but the tree has an actual color theme that she changes every 5 (or so) years. We've had an all red tree (apples, candy canes, ribbons, cardinals, etc), an all white and silver tree (the snow and ice tree), royal blue and silver, and most recently-last year, gold and pale blue...she makes it work! It's gorgeous! The stockings even coordinate with the ornaments.

Most years we go with a victorian theme, but when I have some say we go classic 60s.

I love my tree so much, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it. Its only a few years old now, but its the grestest thing, goes with my whole winter wonderland theme. Looks like a fresh tree from outside with fallen snow (its not all white, green flocked with snow and it looks real). Heres a pic, its similar to this one and it looks even better in person:

Thats a pretty tree! I bet it would look beautiful with red and green lights or multicolored lights!

I use multicolored lights. I used to use the little ones, but I use the bigger old fashioned looking ones now which I like better. I don't have a string of blinking lights, but I have a few blinking bulbs. All of my ornaments are vintage glass ones. They are mostly solid colors, a few of them have small pictures on them. Many of them are from my family's tree from when I was a child. Some are fancier and are shaped like a bell or with cut out parts. I don't use garland and rarely use icicles. My topper is an angel that is not vintage, but was a gift from one of my daughters. I have a wonderful old house now and the ceilings are ten feet high. My tree often almost touches the ceiling! She is in red and green velvet. I love my tree! I get a real tree every year and this year my goal is to keep it from drying out so quickly. I am going to put my little humidifier in the same room with it. My house is really dry.

multi colored lights, and about every variety of ornaments one could imagine. We buy more and more.

I always use white lights and sometimes a few unique colored lights (larger than the twinkle lights). A nicely decorated tree should have lots of lights.

I do my tree in a different color every year changing my ornaments and accessories with ribbons etc.

I use jewelry, perfume caps and anything that sparkles and catches my eye.

I use silk flowers and toile and anything that I can incorporate into my design.

I just have fun with it and I've gotten many compliments on my trees.

Hey, how much did you pay for them? Not nosey, I just couldnt get any help Sunday at Wal-Mart and I would really like to get some this year.

I like to use alot of colored lights, the more the merrier. Most of my ornies are Hallmark collectibles but I am seriously thinking of doing something else this year, I just dont know what yet.

$11.99 for a string of 60 lights. Not on sale either I might add. S'pose to use 90% less electricity than regular minature Christmas lights and the LED lights are supposed to last like 20 years. The give off NO heat either.

There are many styles and colors of these. I think they look great. Got them now cuz I thought they would sell out and cuz I WANTED EM.

thats not as bad I thought they might be. Ya know first year out they seem to over price everything.

To me they just seem to have more of a glow to them, not just a stark colored bulb. And the no heat thing is good since I have a live tree and keep it up for awhile. And same reason I was looking too early, once our Wally World sales out of stuff normally it is gone for the season.

Thanks!!!

I've been using those LED light sets for a few years now. I love 'em! I have two sets of color and one of white.

In response to the original query, I set up several trees and they are all very much eclectic. I have so many ornaments and want to display them all, so it seems I end up with a new tree every few years.

good to hear about the LEDs, I plan to buy more

I did have one minor problem with the first set. One of the wire leads to the chaser controller came out. A minute to solder it back on was all it took to keep me amused for years to come. The other two sets I bought two seasons ago and haven't given me a bit of trouble. Also the transformers may get kind of hot, but rest assured I haven't had any problems with them even after extended use (like ten hours at a time).

I wish you could rent a tree to see if you like it. I'd like to try a fiber optic without paying full price. I'd also like a motorized stand to make the tree spin.

no LEDs have burned out? I know some claim they last like 60,000 hours or something

dominick
10-12-2006, 09:34 PM
Nope not a single burned out or disconnected so far. I really like how they recess into the branches, too. You just get the sensation of an orb of light without the actual lighting being the first thing you notice. Somehow I think my articulation may have failed there, but basically what I'm trying to say is you get the glow without seeing the socket or wiring at first glance.

Ervserver
10-12-2006, 09:40 PM
You know I noticed this too on a display tree at Target. Never thought about the warm transformer, I wouldn't think it would get too hot and light my present on fire.

dominick

Yes, I have. He woke up early, broke into the presents and found a remote control fire truck that sprayed water. He short circuited the tree and it melted into a crimmus disc of sorts.

My mum hasa spinning stand for her tree, she got it on sale at Sears around this time last year. It's great, because she's got way too many ornaments, and this way she can space them out to cover the whole tree, and they can all be seen. It also trips the cats out.

Also, what I do to get my lights looking recessed in the tree is to put them up as I'm putting together the tree. I put the bottom part into the stand, fluff out the branches, and then string the lights up and down the branches, (from the stem out). Then I put the second half of the tree in, and continue the lights. Top bit of the tree in, , and the last few lights. I like the effect much better than just wrapping them around the tree. The pic of my tree is on page 2 and the link says 'Clicky'. Doesn't really look like a link though, I'll go fix that.

My Grandparents had a spinning stand for as far back as I could remember. It has a definite vintage feel to it, and it plays a Christmas song music box style (if that makes any sense, you're lucky... or just as crazy as I). It captured my interest growing up so much that after my grandfather died and my grandmother moved to Florida, she gave it to us. Unfortunately, our 7ft proved to be too much for it and it toppled two days before Christmas. I think this year I'll dig it out and try my fairly light 6ft in it. :wiggy:

When someone speaks of a spinning tree I think of the episode of Home Improvement when Tim hooks up the tree at Tool Time to one and then adds "more power" to it. It starts spinning out of control and shooting the ornies off like bullets. They were all trying to hide to keep from getting hit.

Classic!!

Not that I have been able to find. It would be nice if they did this.

I know closer to Christmas either on WGN or TBS will run all the Christmas episodes either all of them in one week or back to back. Or let me say they did last year.

I went to Amazon and under dvd I typed Christmas and found an amazing wealth of titles that came up. From old Andy Williams Christmas tv specials to Ozzy and Harriet Christmas, remember The Homecoming ~ Patricia Neal, Richard Thomas, Edgar Bergen, and Ellen Corby? I'd forgotten about that one. Christmas TV Classics edition 1 &2, Christmas episodes from old shows like Beverly Hillbillies. Happy Holidays with Bing & Frank.

Just put up the office tree. I told the VP of Finances that I was buying a pre-lit and they could pay me back or not, it didn't matter. He handed me the money and I bought one of the $30 jobs at Wally World. There's nothing like shopping for Christmas decorations on company time! The sales people stood around and watched, as usual, and I, with my bum foot, hobbled around singing like a fool.

Which tree???

The tree in the living room has different types of decorations and of different colors. We have multicolored lights on that tree. (6 1/2 ft tree)

The dinning room tree has white lights and is more of a primative country theme and the primary color on it is burgendy. It goes great with the dinning room theme. (4 ft tree)

The family room tree has a more sports related theme. (4 ft tree)

The tree in the kids bedroom contains mostly disney, looney tunes, dora ornaments. (they are small figure type ornaments) (small tree - 2 1/2 foot)

The one in our bedroom contains small ornaments generally the ones left over after decorating the other trees (3 ft tree)
