View Full Version : Scariest movie you've ever seen

My favorite scary movie is the first Halloween movie, but the most scared I have been is when I was only ten and watched Night of the Living Dead in the theater. I had to leave before it was over and almost passed out from a lack of blood in my head. I was scared for many years after that whenever it was foggy outside. In recent history, The Ring has scared me more than anything else. Most movies just startle you over and over, but that one gave me the creeps each of the three times I watched it.

Since this thread died an unnaturally early death, I take it most fans of Christmas are not also fans of scary movies? Too bad; you're missing out on a lot. It gets the blood pumping, which propels you right into Thanksgiving!

My scariest movie list, not exactly in order:
Night of the living dead (watched it in the theater when I was 10)
The Exorcist
The Ring
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (again, I watched it when I was very young)
Dracula (Bela Lugosi)
Willard (Again, very young. Became a temporary neat freak to avoid rats. Gave it up. Rather die from rats than from boredom.)
Halloween (1978)

well, i am going to disagree with you there, snot. i think that all xmas fanatics have an intrinsic joie de vivre that extends to any and all reasons for fesivating. and as i said, i love scary movies and i even thought of 3 the other day then when i sat down here to officially answer, they poofed outta my head again.
i do have an excellent tale about THE EXORCIST (NOT APPROPRIATE for here will email)

on halloween i tend to go with the classics: hitchcock festival , rhps and young frankenstein!!

I LOVE scary movies! I don't, however, like the really gory ones. I'm not a fan of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". I didn't want to watch "Saw" at first, but I ended up liking it because of the twist. I like "The Exorcist", "The Ring", "The Grudge" (which I actually had a nightmare after watching it!). I used to love the "Friday the 13th" and the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies, but now when I look at them, they were kind of cheesy. I have always loved "The Amityville Horror". I haven't seen the remake yet.

I was in my mid-teens when I read The Amityville Horror and thought, due to the fake news clippings in it, that it was real. It was really scary until I found out otherwise.

The Amityville Horror is based on "reported" events. Nothing has ever been proven. Most think the family the movie was based on just wanted publicity. People that lived in that house afterwards never reported anything out of the ordinary.

sheepsnot
09-19-2006, 10:15 AM
It would take guts to move in there after all those stories, whether or not you fully believed them. Most stories are based upon something real. I would have to give the house a pass. Maybe even the neighborhood. Actually, I think I could sit in a room full of ghosts and not even know they were there, especially if the TV was on. 8)

I never liked the bloody movies. I always get sick to my stomach and faint at the sight of blood. Those are scary AND gross.

However, I LOVED Rod Serling's Night Gallery when I was a kid. All the scary, none of the gross.

And when it comes to old time radio.... I love Vincent Price's Three Skeleton Key. A scary classic!

When I came home from watching Night of The Living Dead I was, of course, scared out of my skull. My little sister was still a baby and was crying in the girls' room. (We had nine kids and 2― bedrooms.) All of the sudden she stopped and I thought the dead folks had gotten to her, so I ran downstairs. (Yes, I know what a pitiful excuse for a brother I was!) I asked my folks if I could watch TV till I calmed down and they said I could. They were watching Night Gallery. I've never trusted them since.

I have poured water on all my wife's stuffed bears and so far none have turned evil. One gave me the bird, but that's it.

I named my dog Gizmo because he looks like Gizmo from the gremlin movies....big ears and all! I've bathed him several times and he's never turned evil...or had little evil creatures pop out of his back, but hey....there's a first time for everything. I'll keep ya posted. :P

My sister-in-law has a Chinese Crested (the hairless ones) that looks like the evil Gremlin (Strike or Stripe??) She has long black hair on the top of her head with a black stripe in the middle. It is so cool looking, yet so weird. I think these are pitiful looking dogs with no brains (they are very hard to house train, evidently).

Scariest movie...hmmmmm

Well, I guess the scariest was the first Halloween movie. I remember waking my parents up in the middle of the night because I thought I heard Mr. Myers in the house!! Now, I am a huge fan of all the Halloween movies. Got the DVD collection and have a Micheal Myers mask that I have worn on Halloween. Cant wait till Halloween 9 comes out!! Rob Zombie is one freaked out guy. The movie should be interesting to say the least.

One that I watched last year that freaked me out pretty good was The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Those kind of movies (ie: The Exorcism, Damien) always get to me more than slasher movies. When it comes to the devil and evil, well ya just never know.

When I was a kid, I couldn't watch The Blob. I don't know what it was about that movie, but it scared the poop out of me. I think that this movie has a lot to do with how I feel about Jello. I'm not a big fan.

The Sixth Sense was an awesome movie. I still get chills watching it, even though I know the ending. Unbreakable, while not a scary movie, was also cool.

Several years ago, I worked the 3 - 11 shift at a nursing home. While driving home one night, I found a radio station that played the old radio shows, you know - the scary ones. I would listen to them all the way home...and then I couldn't get to sleep. I think these were scarier because you used your imagination instead of seeing what other's imaginations thought things looked like.

If you have a Cracker Barrel restaurant near you, they sell the old radio shows on CD. I'll do some research to see if there are still some radio stations...maybe even online ones, that play these shows....and let you know.

The scariest thing about most horror movies now is the acting.

Merry Sage

Scariest movie eh? Well, if you eliminate the slasher/blood 'n guts variety (which covers most of what's been released the last decade or more) and go strictly by suspense/thriller I'd have to say;

The Changeling with George C Scott.

John Carpenter's The Fog

Cape Fear, the original. Robert Mitchum played evil and menacing ace!

Cry of the Banshee from 1970. I was a kid still when I saw this. Scared me silly.

For absolute, total, hanging-onto-my-best-friend-at-the-movies-when-we- went-to-see-it-scary.......Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Some of the Japanese horror movies are excellent too. I know there's more, I was a huge horror fan when I was younger, but I can't think of them at the mo. :frankenstein:

I would have to say the exercism of emily rose freaked me out the most. Now when I wake up and see it's 3 am I always think about that movie. Signs scared the crap out of me because I was living in an old farmhouse that was built in the early 1800's(and was haunted) that was surrounded by nothing but cornfields for 6 miles each way and the closest house was 4 miles away.

Oh yeah Jay, Alien. That was frightful. That's how I feel after I eat Mexican food, like something is alive in my stomach!! LOL. Scariest movie...um... It would have to be "The Shining" the original with Jack Nicholson. Those twins holding hands in their blue dresses at the end of the hallway will be forever etched in my mind like a weird Diane Arbus photograph. Creepy...and Merry Sage, you came up with some good ones...I remember that "Cry of the Banshee", ohhhh wow, good scary.

The Exorcist...yeah, quite the scary movie in it's day. I was an "Usherette" (yes, we still had to wear a burgandy monkey suit with cap...this was in the late 70s!) at a old movie theatre and they told me I was too young to watch it. I did sneak a peek once in awhile. I remember the people filing out of the theatre white as ghosts and horrified.

That's a tough one because I'm not generally 'scared' by the typical slasher, blood and guts type movie. Give me a good old fashioned psychological thriller or ghost story and I'll be having nightmares for weeks.

Off the top of my head, the scariest movies I can remember seeing were:

The House on Haunted Hill (original)
Thirteen Ghosts (original)
The Lady in White
The Others

Also, for the "realistic, this could happen" factor:

Silence of the Lambs
Copycat

The Ring is also up there. As much as I wanted it to, The Grudge didn't really scare me. And neither did the first Friday the Thirteenth, or the Nightmare on Elm Street Movies actually. I actually laughed pretty hard when Jason grabbed the girl at the end. :P

However, that seen in Jaws when the dead guy floats out from the crack in the boat scared me half to death.

The Amityville Horror is by far the scariest I have ever seen...but I was way too young to be watching it when I did, & I wouldn't sleep upstairs in my bed for what seemed like a year!! And then when I finally did start going back upstairs, every night before I would go to bed, I would peak out the blinds to make sure there were no eyes looking in at me & then I would pull the blinds shut super fast & fly into bed & cover up!!! Lol!!! Now...that has been a FEW (uh hum) years ago...I wonder if I would find it to be scary today....

The neighbors were telling me about Psycho the other weekend. They were saying that is so scary. I have never seen it before??

There's nothing scary about blood and gore (Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc.) they're just gratuitously violent and gross. Scary is when it messes with your head!

There's also nothing like a good old ghost story. One of my favourites was actually on last night (you probably missed itcheesy)

The Others. Really good story with a twist you never see coming

The Saw scared me even more...but I didnīt like the movies...none of the Saw Series...to brutal...to crazy....

The Ring was the best too me....the second part was alright, too...but not as good as the first one.....I even watched the original Japanese Movies...but never really understood them, because they were relying a lot on Myths from over there...and I didnīt know them.

For me it has always been The Exorcist. I have always been a holiday junkie of all kinds...
So at Halloween i enjoy the scariest things i could find and watch as a kid. Loved Dracula, Frankenstein, WolfMan, Freddy, Jason, Micheal, LeatherFace, Etc...
In the End The Exorcist scared the ba-gee-bers outta me! Still gives me a chill when the neck goes around... and on top of that the new scenes of her coming down the stairs upside down like a crab...rreeeaallly freaky.
This pic as a kid used to scare the snot outta me...........

:frankenstein:

Cannot think of one. I have seen a LOT of scarey movies. But I never get scared.:scarykitty:

my favorite villain out of scary movies are

1. Michael Myers....Halloween....this guy is sooooo scary....it totally freaks me out

2. Samara - Ring.......back in the year the movie came, that girl who played Samara won "best Vilain" at the MTV Movie Awards....when she received her award, people went crazy....she looked real cute then she bowed over the microphone....put her hair into face and then she went on whisperin in a Samarish way. "Everyone will Suffer"...which was the sentence Samara would say through the phone after people watched the video.....Peoples went crazy
