Hi all,

Sign-ups for the 2009 Christmas Card Exchange are now closed. Thanks to all who signed up. The final list has been published and all participants have been notified by email. I will keep this thread open for a few more days then will lock it down.

For those who may be new to this, let me briefly explain what the Christmas Card Exchange has meant for me. Below are a couple of pictures taken in my home on Christmas Eve:

http://mymerrychristmas.com/images/ccards08a.jpg

http://mymerrychristmas.com/images/ccards08b.jpg

What I want you to notice is the wall in the background on these images -- see all those Christmas cards? The vast majority of those came from our Christmas Card Exchange right here on MMC. I had FIVE walls like this with cards in my home and it made every day Christmas between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve to run to the mailbox. My kids loved it and it was FABULOUS to see cards come from all over the world.

Please read the FAQ on the signup page for more information or ask your questions here in this thread.

I will periodically list names of individuals who sign up for this year's exchange, so visit this post frequently for updates.

Thanks,
Jeff

About how many people sign up every year?

HollyJells
10-16-2009, 10:52 AM
Adam,

It depends actually. Last year it seemed like there were like 60 I think. I had a blast signing the cards and getting them mailed out. Things like this are always a blast.

Jeff Westover
10-16-2009, 11:43 AM
Actually we had over 100 last year and this year looks to be maybe a little less...so far...there is always a flurry of signups at the last minute.

Maureen
10-16-2009, 03:05 PM
Further to RJD's post (thanks for that!) it seems the first of our mail strikes is looming. I think they said they will be starting out with 2 days and then taking it from there.

If there's any chance of perhaps sending out a list as of now, it would certainly help those of us likely to get hit with the trouble.

HollyJells
10-16-2009, 06:17 PM
Over 100? Hmm didn't seem like that many. Now that I look back on it, probably was because I had to go buy like 200 cards last year. LOL rolling my eyes on that one. I have never been great with math, but when you are having fun then who is counting?

HoosierChristmas
10-16-2009, 08:12 PM
I hope there is a reasonable amount. I don't want to have to skip out on anyone. I found a good deal on cards at a local store.

HollyJells
10-17-2009, 09:23 AM
Fidning a great deal is wonderful. I am actually going to cheat a little this year and am gunna print out mailing labels. With midterms and a bunch of school functions happening, I really am not going to have the best amount of time to hand-do everything. I do not think it will really matter to anyone but for those it does matter to, I am sorry but I have to do what time will permit. I actually have last years mailing list, I am thinking about using that and just adding on to it if there is anyone new that ends up on the list. :D.

Jeff Westover
10-17-2009, 10:53 AM
Due to popular request, I am extending the sign up period another two weeks -- get signed up by October 30th!

Jeff Westover
10-17-2009, 02:02 PM
I just emailed those on the list already a preliminary list for this year. I've done this for two reasons -- first, I need all here to double check their data to make sure it is accurate. Second, for our friends living in the UK and other areas that could be affected by a possible mail strike we can get their cards out ASAP.

We will have some folks sign up at the last minute -- it happens every year.

Jeff

Thanks for the correction list Jeff. I also thank you for the kudos, but you really did not have to do that. I am as I type this, getting my mailing labels figured out. Mr. HJ said to say "hello" and a "Merry Early HO HO HO" to everyone.

I need to buy mine. I think I'll do that this weekend. I also want to make labels for my return address.

HollyJells
10-21-2009, 08:51 AM
we are using the habitat for humanity holiday labels for our return address. We support a bunch of charity places throughout the year and lets just say we have more than enough Christmas return address labels to do us for a few years. I am just going to print out the mailing labels.

TamaraQT
10-21-2009, 01:41 PM
Ok, I am not on the list yet, but I was wondering, should I use my home address or get a post office box. I was leaning more towards the post office box, but is it worth it for the expense of the post office box? Or would that be the best choice?

QUESTION:

When I'm sending to our friends across the pond, how much postage should I put on the envelope? Also, when should I send those out because I want it to get there before the strike happens.

I think it depends on where you are mailing to. If you check the USPS website you should be able to look up rates. We just got signed up and I am looking forward to it!

It's already started BUT at the moment, it's only a couple of days at a time. They're off today and tomorrow and then we'll see. I think the plan is that they strike a few days at a time (so far) so hopefully it won't snarl things up completely :-?

I just finished writing my cards out. I just need to get the addresses on the envelopes.

Just a heads up for us Americans, I looked up postage for our friends overseas. Most places (UK, Germany, Belgium, Iceland, and others) it is 98 cents for postage and places in Canada its 75 cents. You might want to double check but those are the prices I got.

I'm going to send mine out the day after Thanksgiving from my mom's work (she has a stamp machine). We go downtown to visit her at work for a half day then we all go to the Kris Kringle Market. We look at the Macy's windows before we go to my mom's work...it's less crowded.

oh yea the postage is weird. BUT i find it is worth it to get cards from all over. If there is one thing this economic shrtfall wont really hit, it is the sending out of christmas cards. Yes ecards are cute but who the heck wants to hold their pc monitor or try to hang in on the wall, not me- having a 36inch monitor is hard enough finding decent desk space for.

I was able to print my return address directly on the envelope. Our printer doesn't work well. Some of the envelopes kept getting stuck. I had to insert the envelopes one at a time. I am defiantly getting labels for the sender addresses.

Sometimes different is good hun. just remember- if we all bought and mailed that same cards, then we would get bored really fast. That's a really good question.

I was left wondering about that last year when a couple of cards arrived and the person had put their real name and nothing about being on the forum. I ended up glancing over the list and figuring out whether the cards were from forum members or not. So it's helpful to have some indication on there but I would LOVE to receive a card whether you put it on there or not! hah hah. I'd just be excited to get one.

If you or anyone else arent on the list, you can send me your address through PM. I would be more than happy to send you a card. I don't want anyone to be left out.

Really :(. I had signed up at the same time I had signed up for the ornament exchange. So I thought my name would be on the final list. Thank you for confirming that info. for me.

I'm all done addressing the cards. I can't wait to start sending them out in the coming weeks! I had to tape the flap shut because some of the adhesive didn't stick.

Stacey

It's something which you had to sign up for before the end of October. This is to enable everyone to have enough time to write and send their cards before Christmas (some of us are overseas)

You'll be amazed though, how quickly the year will pass before Jeff is asking us all to sign up again for next years exchange. Keep your eyes peeled next year too for the ornament exchange which is also very popular!!!!!

Overseas cards are going out next week and the domestic the week after- sorry everyone but finances have been a little tight the past few weeks. Hubby has to get over 15k of dental work done to his mouth and mine is going to cost twice that. Thank goodness we are getting dental insurance. But even that only covers so much.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has sent Christmas cards to my humble abode this year. The kids and I have really enjoyed them. They are the one thing that really seems to be keeping our holiday spirits up.

We have had to cancel our Orphans Christmas this year. My husband got injured at work and subsequently has pnemonia. Not to mention that my in-laws who always help so much are either all down with H1N1 or packing to move 600 miles away on Christmas Day. It's has made things seem very bleak to our family. No money, no family, no nice dinner...etc, etc. However, your cards really brighten the day and every day we go to the mailbox with excitement written all over our faces. The neighbors ooooh and ahhhh with us, too!

I apologize to any who won't be getting cards from us this year, unless you don't mind if they are a little late. Workman's Comp here takes forever and we have had to really tighten our belts. Not to mention my work has been slow due to the holidays. We will catch up quickly once everything is rolling properly though, and I will more than gladly send them out as a "Christmas in July" type thing if you like. One more way to keep the Christmas spirit all year long!

We are all okay though as far as gifts for the kids and we have a turkey in the freezer. It's just our little family of 4 this year. How odd it seems. I am grateful I am a die-hard crafter, makes affording the holidays much easier! Even managed to get a box in the post to the Reservation full of blankets, slippers, potholders, mittens, rugs and beanies.

So, once again, thank you all so much! Your act of simply sending a small card has brightened our lives so very, very much and I am deeply touched and grateful. Isn't it silly that such a small thing brings such wondrous joy? I think it's fabulous! Thank you to all mymerrychristmas friends from near and VERY far, you are truly the joy of the holidays for me!

Merry Christmas! :rudolph:

camillicat- You can send mine out whenever. I know how it feels to have to tighten the belts up. I have been homeless and had nothing but myself to rely on. Sorry to hear hubby got injured. May he have a speedy recovery.
