I'm not talking cardboard ones, I'm taking actual real-looking fireplaces that give off real flames, but don't have chimneys. Saw 'em once on QVC then another time in a Christmas catalog. Has anyone else ever heard of these? I'll be moving into a condo of my own by next fall *hopefully* and am wondering if these things are worth the near $1000 investment.

I have never seen one in action, but Sam's has a nice electric one for about $788 and a ventless gas one for as little as $262. I get the impression they are more for mood creation than heat.

I know some folks that have a gas burning ventless fireplace, they love it !

My MIL has one that is thermostat controlled so it will kick off and on depending on the temps in the house. They are really nice and we are considering getting one.

There are some electric ones that look so real, I saw one at a dealer with LED lights that simulated the fire. Had to get real close to see it wasn't real. Nice thing about these too is that you can shut off the heat and just have the flame effect.

I just found a HUGE selection of electric ones on sale at Target.com

I may have to go look at this one this weekend. The detail on the mantel matches my furniture perfectly.

I've been looking at the electrics lately, never knew Target carried them though.
