....Lucille Greene takes baking and mailing about 30 fruitcakes as Christmas gifts seriously. Seriously enough that the 88-year-old grandmother sued the U.S. Postal Service for emotional distress after accusations of being a terrorist from a postal clerk......

With the smart mouth I have, I'd probably have said the same thing. Besides, fruitcakes contain unknown substances and can cause distress. Granny, while a nice lady doing a very nice thing, can't blame a less than professional counter clerk for her chipped tooth. He didn't push her. What if she'd run out and shot someone in her anger? Would that, too, be his fault?

As someone who mails boxes overseas on a weekly basis, this postal worker was out of line. He was to ask "Is there anything liquid, flammable, perishable, or potentially hazardous?" ...There is nothing in the postal regulations that tells them to ask about explosives!
If he had asked the question properly, fruitcake might have qualified as "potentially hazardous" and in the case of the ones I make...flammable...but never perishable.

I don't know if they ask about explosives or not but there is a respectful way to do it and a snotty way to do it.

If the lady had joked about explosives/bombs she would be in jail. Terrorism isn't funny. That person should be punished.
