currently at my high-school, we're not allowed to have decorations with a christmas tree, santa claus or anything like that because it might offend someone who might be jewish. I understand that..but what if the school decorated for christmas and Hanukah(sorry if spelled wrong)?
We can't have anything saying "christmas" instead we have to have decorations saying "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas"
the point i'm getting at is...Would this no longer be a problem if we celebrated/decorated both christmas and hanukah?

the student council wanted to have a christmas/winter themed dance but had to change advertising posters because they said "christmas dance". They had to change it to "holiday dance". I don't think it's that big of a problem.

A high school is such a finite group of people it would be easy to find out if there were any Jewish people and if so, ask them if they would be offended. I think we are sometimes assuming people aren't as flexible as they really are. There are people on this very website who don't like eggnog, yet I'm not offended. Surprised and appalled, yes, but not offended. Erv, dvdguy and I are planning a midnight raid on their homes with several cases of toilet paper, but we're not offended in the least. 8)

I am so glad that when I was in grade school we could sing christmas songs about Jesus, we could put on the nativity play, we could read the Bible in school, we could celebrate Christmas for that's what it is, celebrating the birth of the Savior. Funny how we are not allowed to protect our traditions here in America but other's that come here have their traditions protected.
Well Christmas is in the heart of those who love Him.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I can understand changing thedance name from Christmas to holiday as it does involve everyone in that grade level or whole school. That part makes sense to me. What does not make sense is that you cannot say Christmas and have the decorations. My daughter attends an elementary public school and when we have functions we decorate for all the holidays to make sure that they are all recognized but there is no ban on the word Christmas. My question is this though...What ever happened to freedom of speech??? I guess in today's world Christmas does not apply to that.

I find this rather interesting. Up here, we can say Christmas, have Christmas decorations, and even have a Christmas sing-a-long at the elementary school. We are also respectful of other religious and faith groups too. Their holidays are mentioned as well. We don't have many from the Jewish tradition, but have many Muslims and non-religious people who attend. Everyone seems to enjoy and respect each other's traditions.
I'm sorry that's not happening at your school. Perhaps next year, if you suggest a holiday party where the many faith groups and non-faith groups (those who only celebrate Santa) at your school can showcase their December (winter) traditions might be a good start at educating the educators.
Here are some holidays which happen in December - St. Nicholas' Day, Hannukah, Kwanza, Winter Solstice, Christmas, New Year's, Ramadan may be in the month (although not for almost another decade now), and like this year there may be an Eid in December. I know I've missed some, but doing a good search on holidays you might find more.
Just an idea.

Its gotten to be a very contentious issue here in England. Christmas is slowly being replaced by "Winterfest" in some areas. How naff is that, I ask you. Its like the traditional Christmas season, besides being commercialised to death, is also being dumbed down to little more than that. Its all the doing of a small but, unfortunately, influential politically overcorrect Left.
I don't know what to think about holidays in schools. I figure if your child is being taught about Ramadan, then Christmas shouldn't be an issue. And in your own home, you celebrate whatever holidays and customs suit you. Not the agenda of a few perhaps well meaning, but misguided people.
Its not helping that more and more people seem to see Christmas as one big pain the butt they'd rather do without.
