:-D I'm very pleased this morning.
Our holiday season typically kicks off standing in line. Here in Salt Lake City the Mormon Tabernacle Choir gives a free annual concert. And it is a huge, huge deal. Not only is there the choir but also the Orchestra at Temple Square plus a guest performer. Last year was Audra Macdonald, before that was Bryn Terfel and Frederica Von Stade. Others such as Gladys Knight, Walter Cronkite, Angela Lansbury and Peter Graves have performed or narrated a program. This year we get to have Renee Flemming. Very exciting. I believe this year, as in previous years, it will also be broadcast on PBS.
Anyway, the hall holds 20,000 people and there are just four performances in mid-December. We've gone every year for the past 5 years and it is just a splendid tradition. Standing in line for the free tickets is almost as big a tradition as is the big night of getting dressed up, going to dinner, seeing the lights at Temple Square and attending the concert. I go one night alone with my wife and then we go again usually on another night to take our older children.
This morning we were out at 5am to go stand in line for the 10am distribution of the tickets. I was very discouraged when we got there to see more than 5000 people ahead of us in line. (One of the ushers said the number in front of us was like 10,000 but I seriously doubted that).
But we went through the process and by 11am this morning we had twelve tickets overall. Everyone gets to go and it looks like we'll have another fantastic free holiday event.
Can't wait! :) There's nothing like traditional music at Christmas.
