...we were to build a Halloween website. Ok, forget that. We ARE building a Halloween website and hope to have it ready soon. But before we get too happy about it, I thought I'd ask:

What would a great Halloween website offer? What would it look like? What do you want to see?

Any input would be really valuable!

I think that is great.

I know I would like to see recipes for things served at a Halloween party as well as recipes for quick and easy meal for the night of halloween. As a working mom I am always looking for dinner ideas for that day so I can get the kids fed something decent and still have time for trick or treating. Want to avoid take out.
Other things I would like to see would be costume and decoration ideas and tips and Halloween movies.

i think it should look darker, color wise. maybe orange & black. Or sorta fallish. is that a word?

Hey Jeff!!! There is a guy over at thexmasplace.com who rolls with the handle "Yoda" who said that in may ways he loves Halloween as much as Christmas...He might be a great resource...He posted some pictures last year of his decorations at home that were phenomenal!!! He is really creative!!! For me, although I like Halloween, it is merely a stop-over to the more important holidays just after it...but I have visited Halloween sites before...I think it's a great idea!!!

Great feedback, one and all. And Jay, I'll look up Yoda. I'm with you. I really like Halloween and we have a lot of fun with it. But it is just a stepping stone.

I think it's a great idea.

Here are some suggestions:
1. Easy costume ideas including unusual costumes, couple themes (sonny & cher, sultan and harem girl)
2. Craft ideas for decorations and such
3. Ghost story swap (tell the stories that haunted you during your childhood)
4. How to make your house into a haunted house for parties
5. Halloween on a budget (would be a good one for MMC too...Christmas on a budget)
6. A place to post our halloween costume pictures
7. Halloween recipes (pumpkin pie, halloween cocktails, cookies, etc.)

I don't know if I want a site that big to manage. I was thinking Wordpress for two reasons: free and easy to add content. MrsH, you're brilliant (and yes, quote me on that). Outstanding feedback. You must be a Halloween freak as well as a Christmas freak, a rare combination.

If you ask Mr. MrsH (that'd be dvdguy for those who haven't been around too long)....he'd just say I'm not just a Christmas and Halloween Freak...I'm just a SUPER FREAK!!!

And as for me being brilliant...I'm not really...I just have occasional flashes of brilliance. I'm just a good list maker. I make all kinds of lists (honey-do lists, things I want to do before I'm 50 lists, shopping lists, christmas lists, pro and con lists).

Those are great ideas! I love to do fun foods for Halloween.

I know there are a lot of people that have a problem with Halloween because of the "evil" factor. There are some stories that I have seen about pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating that give a different twist to them. It is more of a religious thing. You might want to try to find that sort of thing too as an alternative for those that want that sort of thing.

How did I miss this thread? I LOVE Halloween! Show me the way and I'll be right over. Any way I can contribute? :witch:

I have a good friend who's a practising witch (good magic and spells only!). She's a font of great information!

wow merry, i missed it too!! i like all the ideas put forth, but mostly, i would love to see a TRUTH section, A HISTORY LESSON for those bozos out there who really think that halloween is about worshipping satan. REINDEER POOP!!!

i love the kitsch of halloween, but also appreciate it for it's origins (which is a bad sentence, but i know what i mean!)

i think the above sounds a little preachy and i didnt mean it to be. i am the first person in line at michaels when the halloween decor comes out (already got a new batch of potion bottles etc!!) i mean i really really really love all of the silliness and spookiness and kitsch associated with modern and victorian halloween celebrations. i just get really really tired of ignorant people imposing their ignorance on me and the rest of the world. and with that, i will shut it as if i keep going i am liable to have to ban myself......

No, I mean telling the truth about Halloween. Is there such a site out there? I can find a lot of anti-sites and a lot of "fun" sites but no sites out there really setting the record straight about Halloween.

We're weeks away from having anything ready, Merry. If you have your pencil sharpened, we're looking for folks who are knowledgeable about it to write content for it.

I think that most people who are on the internet looking for stuff in regards to "Halloween" are looking for costumes, costume ideas, props etc...

We've done a Halloween site before and it's been fun. I always look at Halloween as the entry into the fall "season" and holiday season.

Feel free to check it out:

o.k. I bookmarked the site and will check it out when I have more time but between this site and the Halloween.com I don't know how I'm going to keep track of another site..anyone want to volunteer to clean my house while I browse all these cool sites?

O.k. I must have totally missed something. I went to Halloweenhaunted.com and registered. Went to the discussion section and found nothing but xxx posts...it IS supposed to Halloween isn't it?

I was really disappointed. When I inquired about it I got this response:

Thanks for the information about them... However, we already banned them
and we really didn't welcome them here anymore at all! We have IP system
and our maintenace system can tell who the spammers and smutty posters,
we will delete them immediately!

Chris Richardson

They apparently forgot to ban and delete them because there is a new one after my post!

Again, really disappointed!!

There are some awesome Halloween sites out there already. All the die hards hang out at them.

They are;

http://www.halloweenforum.com/
http://www.hauntforum.com
http://www.halloween-l.com/bbs/

For the person looking for the truth about Halloween just do a search for "halloween origins". There are lots of sites and I think the History channel has a page for it as well.

Ummm...don't know the status on your Halloween site but something I've done before that people really seem to enjoy is a Seasonal Book List...in this case Halloween books for kids with a short review of the book and perhaps a link to a related craft.
For example the books: Room on a Broom, Shake Dem Halloween Bones, Skeleton Hiccups, etc....there are tons out there and a crop of new ones each year...so the list could be updated with fresh material yearly or whatever depending on the traffic. I would love to check out the site but don't see a link...not ready yet?

I'd love a Halloween site!

How about ideas for homemade costumes... I was on a budget for years and always made my kid's costumes. I loved having to be creative! Even though I could probably afford to go crazy on my costume budget now, I still love to gather things from around the house to make a great costume.

I also like the idea of a place to upload photos for costumes but also home decorations. We could browse through, compliment and get ideas from member's pics of porches, fireplace mantles, ect.
