A recent double issue of Variety, the showbiz industry magazine, spotlighted the Cannes Film Festival on its 60th Anniversary. While thumbing through the advertisements, I chanced upon an ad and website for a company called Boll AG. It's run, the ad explained, by a man cited by the editors of England's Empire Magazine as the WORST living movie director EVER! His name: Dr. Uwe Boll.
Dr. Boll, it seems, has apparently written, produced and directed an action comedy entitled Postal, with an intent of releasing it in North America this coming September 28th. At first, I considered this an afterthought. Then I noticed who was in the cast. Zack Ward and Dave Foley were in the lead roles --- but (and this is the REALLY shocking part!) among the co-stars, who should I find but Santa himself from Santa Claus: The Movie, David Huddleston.
As you can obviously imagine, I was completely shocked ---- SHOCKED!!! ---- to make this discovery. According to the advertisement, Boll AG (http://www.bollworldsales.com) ranks among the most successful production companies around, having allegedly raised some $270 million for film production over the past 6 years, and only last year, launched into some of the world's leading stock markets.
Bottom line, I check this ad out, and I'm like, "How could you, David Huddleston! You, who made a small yet major contribution to the belly laughs of Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles in the 70's --- and then, before you even landed the role of Santa, you were about to follow in the footsteps of 'Rosie the Bounty Lady' when you were cast in the lead in a series of spots for an orange juice named Citrus Hill --- and now, here it is, 2007 --- and you're THIS desperate for work that you have to throw your lot in with a filmmaker who defended his reputation by literally challenging his biggest detractors to a boxing match?!?!?!"
I hate to have to say this here, fellow ClausNet.com members, but I find myself at a total loss. As you know, it's David Huddleston's performance as the Jolly Ol' Elf that makes Santa Claus: The Movie so magical. I, for one, cannot believe that an actor of David's versatility would be this desperate to land a gig in the film business!
Frankly, it's enough to want to make an old Kringle like me give up drinkin' that ol' egg nog. Like I said, I'm totally shocked!
