The sleigh was all packed, the reindeer were fed,
But Santa still knelt by the side of the bed.
"Dear Father," he prayed "Be with me tonight.
There's much work to do and my schedule is tight.
I must jump in my sleigh and streak through the sky,
Knowing full well that a reindeer can't fly.
I will visit each household before the first light,
I'll cover the world and all in one night.
With sleigh bells a-ringing, I'll land on each roof,
Amid the soft clatter of each little hoof.
To get in the house is the difficult part,
So I'll slide down the chimney of each child's heart.
My sack will hold toys to grant all their wishes.
The supply will be endless like the loaves and the fishes.
I will fill all the stockings and not leave a track.
I'll eat every cookie that is left for my snack.
I can do all these things Lord, only through You,
I just need your blessing, then it's easy to do.
All this is to honor the birth of the One,
That was sent to redeem us, Your most Holy Son.
So to all of my friends, least Your glory I rob,
Please Lord, remind them who gave me this job."

I love this poem. I read this same prayer (as Santa) on Christmas Eve in front of 500+ parishioners! It was a big hit!

It was! I incorporated it into my "script". It was well received. It is always fun when Santa get applause - especially in a church! Christmas Eve is my very favorite (if not stressful) gig of the season.
cheesy
I will have to see if I can find the whole speech and post it.

I do something different each year. Last year I discussed the "symbols". I pulled each one out of my bag and discussed it's meaning.

Funny you should mention that. It's a good thing I keep a copy of each Homily (Sermon)...

Okay, here is the "script" from 2005. I call it a script, but it is really more of a guideline. There is always a lot more ad-libing going on than what is written down.
cheesy
Each year we come up with something a little different. One year I led the Parish in Happy Birthday to Jesus. And one year I did a bit on "Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays"!

The Priest at my Church is very cool and has a great sense of humor. This is my favorite "gig" of the season! Honestly, I can't imagine doing these routines with some of the other Catholic Priests I know. Anyway, here it is. I may have to expand this to a blog on ClausNET.

Christmas Eve 2005

Father Barry begins Homily

Father Barry: Well each year, I ask Santa to stop by but it looks like he was too busy this year…

Santa quietly enters from behind Father at podium while Father is talking. Santa “sneaks” up to Father gesturing to everyone to be quiet. Father notices Santa is there.

Father Barry: Oh thank goodness you’re here Santa. I was worried you would not be able to make it this year!

Father Barry moves to other side of alter and sits

SANTA: Well now I am so happy to be here. Thank you for inviting back again this year. It is always a pleasure for me to stop by St Mary’s Church on Christmas Eve.

You know I don’t remember there being this many people here last year. Could it be that joke book I gave you last year is working out? How bout it everyone have the jokes been better this year? Ho Ho Ho! That bad eh? Well... I’ll see what I can do this year…

Well now, Merry Christmas Everyone!

Wait for response

Oh, come now! You can do better than that! Let's try that again, shall we? MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Wait for response

HO! HO! HO! That was much better!

You know every year, Father Barry asks me to stop by and talk a little bit about the true meaning of Christmas. Last year, I had everyone sing Happy Birthday to our Lord. This year, I would like to share with you a poem that was sent to me:

The sleigh was all packed, the reindeer were fed.
But Santa still knelt by the side of his bed.
"Dear Father," Santa prayed, "Be with me tonight.
There's much work to do and my schedule is tight.
My sack will hold toys to grant all the kids' wishes.
The supply will be endless like the loaves and the fishes.
I can do all these things Lord, but only through You.
I just need your blessing, and then it's easy to do.
I do this only to honor the birth of the One,
That was sent to redeem us, Your most Holy Son.
So to all of my friends, lest Your glory I rob,
Please Lord remind them, who* gave* me this job."

SANTA: What I love about this poem is that it helps to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas – and that the gifts that I bring and the ones that you exchange with one another should be a reminder of the gift that God gave us – His Son Jesus.

Well, now I think I best be on my way, but Father Barry before I go I wonder if I could get your blessing for a safe journey this night.

Father Barry: Certainly Santa! It's the least I can do!

Father Barry says blessing

SANTA: Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Santa exists down aisle

Brilliant! I'd never read that, but thanks so much for sharing it. I work in a church office and I could certainly use something like that for the kids around here.

I've been saying that prayer for several years as I go onstage each day. I also use it in some of my talks and sermons. Always wets down the house.
