View Full Version : Are you excited about the "Christmas Creep" that is begining as early as September?

The Christmas Creep, which the term was created by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, meant that the retailers are going to begin stocking their shelves with Christmas merchandises, setting up Christmas trees and holiday lighting way before Thanksgiving and Halloween.
Some retailers are hoping to get consumers into a Christmas shopping spirit by kicking off the Yuletide atmosphere by selling Christmas ornaments, gift wrap, cards and artificial trees as early as September to maximize their profits as much as they can.
Other ways they will do is to flood their Christmas commercials onto our TV set to get us in the mood to shop. And the other one is to play Christmas music in the store. It seemed that every year they seem to advertise Christmas earlier and earlier.
What do you think about this?

I dont mind it at all :) It drives my inlaws NUTS though and say that "Christmas is too comercialised" to which DH and I say, "Its only as comercialised as you make it!" If people dont like it then dont go in that section of the store. DUH.
Personally I think the birth of Christ is more important then Indians and Pilgrims sharing a feast... and this is what I tell people when they ask me about why I decorate so early.

HAHAHAHA Got off topic here, sorry

I don't know if the birth of Christ is any different than Thanksgiving, seeing as the Pilgrims left their native land to be able to worship they way they wanted. Isn't that what Christ is all about? And if I remeber correctly Christ wanted us to Love each other and that is what he preached. So all in all Thanksgiving is as important.
But either way you are correct in saying that if you think Christmas is too commercialized than you have lost the true meaning Christmas and don't go to those sections in the store, don't spend your money or time there, it means more for us fanatics.

Jana is right. We all know what Christmas has become in the eyes of some, including the retail sector. I feel sorry for them. They need to pop in here and get converted. *mwah!* cheesy
The Christmas Creep....sounds like a Scrooge-esque movie!

I have to admit that I think September is a wee bit early for full on Christmas saturation at the stores. Of course, I still get a thrill when I see the first Christmas things going up (even if it is in September) BUT, then I feel sad and disappointed when it's a couple of weeks before Christmas and the Christmas shelves are nearly bare and they're already making room for Valentine's Day stuff, kwim?

I'm always the one asking retailers when certain things like light strings will be available for sale, because I need them to build my projects. And if you work with a charity like Operation Christmas Child, you need to get the presents wrapped and ready to leave at the drop off point before Thanksgiving. So, it's convenient for me.
As for the department stores and all, I don't mind since that's where my head is anyway.

I can't wait until the stores start putting out the Christmas stuff. We need to get more decorations and plan on start buying as soon as they put them out. The dollar store here already has their Christmas stuff out. Now I just got to wait until pay day!
Jana I also agree with you about the commericalism. It will only feel like if you let it.

I love going to the craftshops in august and september to look at the christmas stuff there. Christmas items in the shops start to get visible here in october and a lot of people complain about it. I just simply donīt understand it!
Sometimes I feel like Iīm either so much more mature then those people or a lot more naive. Either way, I donīt get frustrated or in a bad mood because of commercials on the TV. If I see something that I donīt like that much I just simply turn off the TV, go to another store or stay at home were everything is like I want it to be. OK, you get my point
I would think that being able to buy christmas items before december would be a good idea, especially for those who complain about stress around christmas time.
(hahaha this topic is the one that get me a little bit frustrated )

It doesn't bother me if the stores put Christmas things on sale early. I rather like it, but I am a Christmas nut. cheesy

I have to agree!! Though I like seeing Christmas things in the stores early - it disappoints me that so much, if not all of it is down before Christmas is even here!!! I guess that is how Holloween & Thanksgiving fanatics feel about their items being replaced with Christmas items before their season is here. BUT if they would put Christmas items out in September & leave them out until after Christmas, that would be fine n dandy with me! :)

It doesn't bother me to see them start early. The longer I can enjoy the special time of Christmas the better. I know that some will make it commercial and won't celebrate it at all. But for me I know the true meaning of Christmas and hope that those that don't today will know tomorrow.

Can you guys believe how fast time has gone? I mean, seriously, look how fast the year has gone by. Its crazy. And I knew this back when I was packing stuff up, I said to myself just watch, you wont even feel the wait until next year, time seems to just keep going faster. September is a bit early, yea, give Halloween a chance first, but mid October is fine.
Its already starting, already seeing Fred Claus posters around here. For me, as soon as October 1st hits, its go time, so we're less than 2 month until he holidays for me. To me, the "Nightmare before Christmas", which is Halloween, starts it off and I'm all into that too and then the day after Halloween, I'm walking in the winter wonderland and fa la la la la'in!
Plus, I'm heading to Disney World mid October, so lots of holiday festivities soon to come!!!! I start decorating the week after Halloween for Xmas, Halloween I pretty much just do a big thing outside the day of. To me its one big happy winter holiday and love to enjoy it for a long time. I don't celebrate it for religious reasons anyway, we celebrate to more for its non-religious origins so that also why I start decorating earlier with all my winter scenes and what not.

I can't wait. It can't get here soon enough for me. Although, I love the Thanksgiving season because of the excitemtent of the buildup into the Christmas season. Besides, Christmas is a frame of mind, not a day or even a season.
