My mother always starts asking me in july what i want for christmas. And usually i don't know. But i told her i want one thing. A treadmill or a x-box 360. Anyone else know what they want way way way before christmas even comes?

Well, we talk about it. I tell them what I think I would get the most use out of and if they can't do it it's fine. This Christmas I'm pulling for a new computer because I've been using a laptop heavily as a normal computer, which isn't supposed to be done. It's kind of burnt out now even though I got it two years ago. It still works, but the battery does not last, keys are missing, and the power cord is detiriorating. Also, I think the speakers are starting to cackle. So yeah, a new computer would be great.
Problem is, I know what to ask for but I don't know what anybody really wants. That's the real problem.

So, why don't you pull your mom aside and ask what dad would like and do the same to your dad. If you have siblings ask them to make a wish list and get one from the list.

Most dads are like that. That's why I suggested that you ask your mom what he would like. Usually it's something lame like why don't you get good grades or become a doctor. I had the same problem with my folks. I'd pick up my mom some piece of cheap jewelry and my dad would get handkerchiefs. Lame is as lame does.

I thought you were going to say something like, "For dad to lay off the booze for just one Christmas."
Cause that's what my kids want.

:tree: I don't usually ask for expensive items from my family members. So far, I haven't suggested anything. My husband and I buy a Christmas gift for our home every year. I think I'd like a new artificial Christmas tree this year. If I find one that I really love and can picture it adorned with my decorations, I'll do it. I'll pass the tree I have now onto my oldest grandchild with a few decorations of course once I'm able to replace it.
My dad would like us to stop exchanging gifts and give what we would have spent to charity because he likes the get-togethers far more than the presents and that's why he has trouble asking for specific items. I have to get hints from my mom so he'll have something to unwrap.

Well, for pete's sake. Why don't you come write for My Merry Christmas? Yeah, we pay next to nothing but you'd at least be writing about something you love!

Yeah, but aren't you studying to be a teacher? We always need teachers out here in AZ.

Nobody teaches for the money. To be a teacher you usually have to have a job to support your teaching habit.

I have to stop buying stuff for myself around October because if I don't nobody will have anything to buy me. I usually buy what I want so it gets very difficult not to buy myself stuff.

I usually buy my son artwork by Ruth Thompson. She does fantasy art and he collects. I haven't told my husband what I want, because I don't know yet. I was hoping we were going to buy Christmas presents in Boston, but that didn't happen. And he is too hard to buy for because he doesn't know what he wants. One year we bought him TinkerToys and Lincoln Logs because he never had them as kids. Another year I bought him 1 square foot of land in Scotland. So I try to buy whimsical, serious and functional (not all at the same time).

We have to do the same here.
I usually buy stuff I want as well as my dh. I am not hard to buy for though. I can walk thru any store and find things..Danny is really hard to buy for..he doesn't collect anything, has the tools he wants...he usually know what he's getting...except for what pics will be on his new boxers...lol

I never know what I want. Especially now that I have a little girl. To me its all about her. As most parents know you learn to go without. I guess if I really NEED (not want) I buy it. I'd be happy with a new book, something basic I guess plus I love to read. But the best gift(s) I have recieved are what my daughter makes me from school.

There is nothing I really really want. I personally don't get into all the gift giving (for spouses). I save all that for all my nieces, nephews and daughter. To me the gift giving is about children. I personally am content with a nice dinner and family and friends to visit with. If I need something so bad I just go out and buy it.
Hope you got your XBox 360!

I really just want a Xbox 360, and if not that, eh, oh well. I can't be greedy, so whatever I get I can't complain.

I usually tell my boys a gift card to Starbucks, or gift certificates to the movies.

Mammaduke, I hope you get your wish.....
The best Christmas present I could get from my parents this year would be a visit.

all I want is my dh's business to do well. To the OP, be glad they ask this early, all I get is "It's way to early to be thinking about Christmas" *Sigh* Parents just dont understand LOL

I keep a running "Wish List" in a computer journal of mine because when the rare desire strikes, it pops up from La-la-land; I'd forget it if I didn't write it down.
So far, I'd like a 3-tiered mini cake pan set because I'd like to start incorporating elaborate fondant-covered cakes into some of our special occasions. A big cake is such a waste on we cupcake/pie loyalists.
And I'd love piano sheet music for Howard Blake's "Walking in the Air" and/or Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" (3rd movement especially), but we'll see if I've earned it by then (by thoroughly appreciating the music I have).
Besides those, I love stocking stuffers. DH excels at surprising me. :)

This is an interesting thread - fun to read. I would love to get (1) a bunch of paperback books by one writer that the giver absolutely loves (all the better if they are used paperbacks. It isn't about spending money, it is about sharing enjoyment!).
A gift certificate to use at after-Christmas clearance sales. OR - a Starbucks gift certificate.
Spending relaxed, happy time with our family and friends is the BEST gift! Anytime that happens, it is Christmas for me.

I never ask them for anything because they have guided me in the right direction all my life and made me the person I am today. Last year the surprised me with a new Sat Nav system though

No idea. Like Annette, I usually just want for the kids, not myself. Or the things that I do want, they're too far to give (such as an afternoon together, babysitting, etc).
I think this year DH and I are going to go somewhere and call that our gift to each other.
