Me too for the same reason as dominick. It's an early start to fall here and it's making think about Christmas right around the corner!!!!

Jeff Westover

It's not exactly fall here but it is cloudy due to the thunderstorms and that was enough to get my wife in the kitchen with the kids to make cinnamon rolls tonight (a definite fall-like activity in my house).

We had a very fall like day here in RI. We even made smores in the fire pit in the back yard tonight!

I am really excited about this season! I am headed to Santa school again this year AND this is my second Christmas here!

Jeff Westover
08-19-2007, 09:39 PM
Christmas day? That's interesting. I'd think it would be a Thanksgiving weekend kind of thing. Christmas day for us is always a feast of the Christmas Eve leftovers. (Christmas Eve is the biggest feast of the year in our house. We usually have tons of great food that we make but honestly what makes it interesting is all the stuff brought over by the neighbors. We have a neighborhood that has made a tradition of coming over to our house to check out the Santa updates and mooch food off us. These days they bring goodies when they visit and we never know what they are going to bring. It is an adventure).

I don't eat red meat or pork. I don't consider myself a vegetarian . I have said in the past however if it wasn't for Chicken and Cheese I'd probably go Vegan.

Is that a medical thing or merely a preference?

Billy Battles
08-20-2007, 02:25 AM
It's a preference. I am not a person who will preach how its bad for you or anything like that. I just have never really liked red meat or pork. Every once in a great while if there isn't anything else available I might eat a burger. I just always preferred Chicken, Turkey, and Seafood. I love Chicken it's my absolute favorite food,I am also a big fan of Veggies, except spinach(or greens) and peas.

Corn does NOT go with everything. Trust me on this. They put it on pizza over here and mix it in with tuna. *shudder*

dominick

I made a sort of hamburger casserole the other night with fresh bicolor sweet corn, mashed potatoes, and ground beef prepared almost like a sloppy joe. Top with cheese and stick it in the oven. The fresh corn really makes all the difference.

mmm, i love sweetcorn on a pizza, it's lovely with chicken, mushrooms and extra cheese!

i also really like tuna pasta, you cook some twisty pasta add some lemon juice, mayo, sweetcorn and tuna. it's lovely - try it!

in the uk we also have tuna and sweetcorn jacket potatoes, they are lovely!

nobody answered my question, what is prime rib?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/64/Beef_cuts.svg/511px-Beef_cuts.svg.png

It's a cut of beef from the section labeled rib. It is cut as a roast, and is technically a standing rib roast. Prime rib is a colloquialism.

Well now, that's ridiculous. Tuna in any heated variety is just sick and wrong. God put those things in the water for a reason and heat has nothing to do with tuna.

I don't think the Brits know much about pizza if they think tuna works. Corn though, I've had on a pizza and that does work...if thought through correctly.

But tuna and corn on a pizza? Sheesh, that's like putting mayonaise in your cocoa.

JOHNOR
08-20-2007, 12:41 PM
lol dominick and lol jeff westover!

i have to agree that tuna isn't so great on pizza.

sunday dinners are standard procedure in the uk, you know, beef, yorkshire pudding, 3 veg, gravy, roast potatoes? although it can be pork, chicken or lamb

I got that, but I guess I'm confused with what you like or don't like... and I guess I'm also unsure what a roasting joint is.

As a proud member of the Mayo in Cocoa Society, I will not stand for this abuse, this lack of respect, this insolence for another minute. We at the M.I.C.S. have had all we can take. We have just closed the deal to have Santa speak on our behalf this year urging all young folks to add mayo to their cocoa. We will not be ignored...

JOHNOR
08-20-2007, 01:26 PM
LMAO JayIsh!

Dominick: i don't like beef unless it is filet mignon or a beefburger!

a roasting joint is a joint of beef that you put in the oven, you can also roast a full chicken or a joint of pork. am i making sense or am i confusing you?

in america, if you roast meat, do you have sauce/stuffing with it? in england we have:

beef: horseradish sauce
chicken: stuffing
pork: apple sauce
turkey: cranberry (of course!) and bread sauce

Head Elf

Not corn on the cob, just regular shoepeg corn from our local green giant. the gravy of course goes on the potatoes and the corn is just a little side veggie.

Head Elf
08-20-2007, 10:49 PM
you might be confusing them because of the word joint.. We have Sunday dinners that usually is Roast Chicken, baked chicken, bbq chicken or Roast Pork Loin or a nice piece of delicious red meat known as Roast Beef. Prime Rib is a choice cut of meat and cooked at a low temp for about 4-5 hrs for medium rare. Quite delicious............. Usually we have potatoes, another type of veggie, biscuits, gravy (for the potatoes). At least that's what we used to do for Sunday dinners.:hello:

JOHNOR

biscuits? what do you mean biscuits? lol! in the uk a biscuit is a cookie or a digestive or a chocolate hob nob? surely you don't put them on your sunday dinner! lol!

by the way, your sunday dinner sounds delicious! is it homemade gravy you use or packet gravy?

dominick
08-21-2007, 08:39 AM
Sure, we use sauces, but it's not as clear cut as saying this goes with that. There are many different culinary styles and traditions associated with individual ethnic decent, regions, and even neighborhoods.

I grew up in an Italian household on the south side of Chicago. 9 times out of 10 if someone is cooking a roast of any sort in my house, it's going to be "Chicago style" Italian beef, which is traditionally sirloin cooked medium to medium rare, then thinly sliced, cooled, and finally reheated in a moderately spicy broth. Heap the meat on a crusty white loaf, top with mozzarella if desired, and dip the entire sandwich in the broth. The sandwiches themselves usually weigh in at over a pound.

Now if you go to say Texas and ask for one, they'll probably hand you a hamburger with mozzarella on it or something.

dominick
08-21-2007, 08:42 AM
Oh, and on this side of the pond, a biscuit is very similar to what you would call a scone. A small dinner bread using baking soda or powder instead of yeast. Sometimes also referred to as quick bread.

JOHNOR
08-21-2007, 09:34 AM
are your biscuits crunchy or soggy? i am thinking they might be like our dumplings

dominick
08-21-2007, 09:48 AM
The idea is to get them flaky on the outside and tender inside. I'm telling you, some biscuit recipes and some scone recipes are nearly identical.
