I made a gingerbread house last year...

So I made a gingerbread house last year. A premade kit. The candies looked good. The house looked good. But it was harder the HECK. Nobody wanted to eat it it was so hard!! haha. Anyone else experience this? Any tips on making one?

No tips, but we had the same problems with our pre-made kit. You know, now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever actually "eaten" gingerbread. I guess I thought it was *supposed* to be that hard and, to me, that's inedible!

My Grandmother used to make them. They were from scratch and awesome. My Dad and Uncle would allways pick the red jujubes off the house and blame eachother. Man those were good times :)

We make them from scratch, but we don't actually use gingerbread. We have young children in the family, so we make our houses out of graham crackers. We use 1/2 gallon milk containers for the base to glue the graham crackers on. You can make them as big or small as you want. We make the glue out of powdered sugar, water and cream of tartar. The decorations are your choice. The adults usually make the base with cardboard covered with aluminum foil. The houses sit on top.:???:

LOL, last Nov. my daughter brought one of those pre-made kits here thinking it would be nice for the little one to do while the men were out hunting. Well, the icing was so thick that she burned up my mixer in the process. Nothing tasted good.
I think a complete homemade gingerbread house would be great. A lot of work but probably worth it.

I've never actually eaten the annual Gingerbread House. It's always for show (pre-made) and each year my mom and I will think up new things to add. (last year it was using Riesens - very hard chocolate covered chocolate squares - to make a fireplace... year before that was using dum-dum's for trees... year before that was using mini pretzels to make a fence....)

No prob! Me and my mom will have a blast and tear up the kitchen doing everything. I'm still trying to master making the Icycles (spelling?), but i can make the best Stained glass windows! You roll out gum drops then cut them into squares and place them side by side and roll them together. (Works best if they're a little warm!)

I use a cardboard sheet but does anyone else you anything diffrent??
