View Full Version : The worst Christmas album ever?

All this review and expansion at Merry Christmas Radio has given us plenty of opportunity to hear some really BAD Christmas music.

Just wondering...who do you think has the worst Christmas album or song of all time?

dominick

It's got to be one of those super contemporary boy band type albums... I couldn't name them if I tried.

Two years ago I listened to a Johnny Cash Christmas album. As a big Johnny Cash fan I was severely disappointed.

My boys love the barking dogs stuff. It was cute the first few thousand times I heard it, now I just want to mow down the person who made that CD.

Luckilly, our copy got "lost" last year when we put away the Christmas stuff.

I'm not a big fan of the Twelve Days of Christmas but don't dislike it. I think having to sing it every year in school ruined it for me. I would have to say i dislike most of the contempory stuff by the "pop" bands. I'm more into the old classics although there are a few newer songs that i do like just not as many.cheesy

I love the classics and I'm not big on the "pop" stuff or most of the remakes. So, while I'm decorating I do the parody stuff by Bob Rivers and nearer to Christmas I put on the Classics. I think the worst album (CD) is the Redneck Christmas.

EstherSmith

I would by no means call this the WORST Christmas cd, but I was really disappointed with Johnny Mathis' latest Christmas cd. Johnny's voice still sounds great, but the production on the album was not very good. The orchestrations sound kind of cheesy and over-synthesized to me. I still listen to it occasionally, but it is inferior to all of Johnny's other Christmas cds.

Why does a smiley replace the word c-h-e-e-s-y in my post?

dominick

That's just how it's set up. I fixed it for you by disabling the "smilies" in that particular post, though.

Well, I don't know about Albums (although I've heard some pretty BAD Christmas music in my time) but I do know what gets my vote as the worst (and probably most overplayed) Christmas song of all time: Christmas Shoes.

For me Christmas is a time of joy, happiness, jingle bells and Holly Jolly Christmas stuff...and then the DJ plays that awful song and it all goes to..well, you know. Who writes a song like that at Christmas?? Who wants to listen to a Christmas song where the little kids mom is dying?? It's just way too sad and just makes me :(.

Oh, as a little side story. I had heard this song being played at work so everytime it would come on the radio station in the car, I would quickly change the station. Well, one day my DH was complaining that I always switched that song...he said he'd never heard it and he wanted to hear it. I tried to warn him about how sad it was but he said to leave it the next time it came on, so I did. It was Christmas Eve and we were driving to the in-laws, I started to change the station when the song came on but he asked me to leave it so he could hear it.

So, when the song was over, I looked over at him, his eyes were all puffy red from crying, tears streaming down his face.

I said "you're crying"

He said "OF COURSE I'M CRYING! What am I? Made of stone?"

I listen to a lot of Christmas music, but I don't think that I know "Christmas Shoes." Who is the original artist? Is a country song? I don't listen to a lot of country music.

Yes it is a country song i would say its like most country songs.

Someone is drunk, the wife left, We are going broke, I need love and the children are still sad. The dog wont stop barking so i had to have another beer!

Most of the country songs are sad and depressing :(

Here is a movie of that song now:

the worst christmas song i have heard to date is that mannheim steamroller song (can't think for the life of me what the song is called, but it's a classic) it is dreadful! heard it on merry christmas radio and couldn't stop laughing.

my favourite christmas song of all time is without a doubt "fairytale of new york"

I agree Johnor, "Fairytale of New York" is one of the best christmas songs.

Isnīt it Paul Mcartney who sings "A wonderful christmas time"?
Well, I donīt like that song.
I think that is one of the worst.

"Christmas shoes" is sung by the Christian group 'New Song'. It's about this little boy whose mother is dying on Christmas Eve and he's trying to buy her a new pair of shoes so she'll look pretty when she goes to heaven and sees Jesus. It's told from the perspective of a man in line at the store with him, who helps him pay for the shoes since it turns out he doesn't have enough money to buy the shoes for his mom.

You can listen to it by visiting their MySpace page

http://www.myspace.com/newsongonline

It's listed in their little playlist that loads on the page, but I warn you, be prepared to cry.

I've been mulling this one over for a while, trying to figure out what I thought was the worst and I've come up empty...I know I don't care much for the "Very Special Christmas" series after the second one, and I have several songs that I don't like (i.e. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, Domenick the Donkey...That crappy Britney Spears song on the second "Now That's What I call Christmas" series...) but I don't have a whole album I hate. I'd have an even harder time to tell you what my favorite one is though!

Christmas Shoes HAS to be one of my favorite Christmas songs! I still cry every single time I hear no matter how many times that is!! My kids and I always cry through it.

I also like the song Maria's Gift about a little girl who goes to goes to give a gift to Baby Jesus but is so poor she can only give him a bird. It turns out that the bird is a Nightengale (spelling?) and it sings beautifully. It's the basic message that she gave all she had and it was perfect!! My kids like that one too.

I'm with Dominick on the Johnny Cash Christmas album. His version of "The Little Drummer Boy" is just WEIRD. I mean...Indian wardrums?

The next on my list is Madonna's remake of "Santa Baby." She takes a classic and performs it in a fake Betty-Boop style that gives me a headache.

I love Rosemary Clooney, but I can't pick up a single Christmas CD of hers that doesn't include "Suzy Snowflake." Gag me.

Oh, and if you folks think "The Christmas Shoes" is a downer, give a listen to Alan Jackson's "Please Daddy (Don't Get Drunk This Christmas)."

over at podsafechristmas.com they played two of the twisted sister tracks last year:

http://podsafechristmas.blogspot.com/search/label/Twisted%20Sister

Well, they're different... I have to say that from my 'long hair head banging' days, I kinda like them!!!

I'm ashamed to admit that I have this cd in my collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Box-Banjo-Christmas-Accordion-Band/dp/B0000253LW (although it didn't make it onto the ipod!!!) the amazon review about sums it up, it's truly awful. All of the songs/carols sound exactly the same and are played at about 1,000mph, It actually tires you out just listening to it! It's only now put on to wind certain friends up!

If you really want to hear it, I'll do a few sample mp3s and stick them somewhere!

EstherSmith

You know, I used to hate Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, too. And then, I actually listened to the lyrics all the way through and realized that it is a song about believing in Santa! After that, I found it to be a funny (although twisted) song.

I don't like Back Door Santa by Bon Jovi from the Very Special Christmas cd. It's not really about anything Christmas at all. Just not a very good song. It's the only song on that cd that I don't like.

I don't know about bad Christmas albums and such. I have hundreds of albums, cds and tapes. I do know of a song that I think is the worst. I love the song "Silver Bells." It's always been my favorite Christmas song. It just tells a lot of what Christmas is about in the song. Well, I love country music and a few years ago, I bought Travis Tritt's Christmas album (on tape, I think) and I gagged when I heard his version. It's been a while since I've heard it....I really did not like it. I just bought the cd from eBay and I'll listen one more time when it comes. It may be the last time. I remember it being really bad. I'll add the other songs to my playlist on Yahoo jukebox.

I have the Barking Dogs of Kopenhagen on vinyl. Yip, I just admitted it. Although I don't have a turn-table so I haven't heard it. I picked it up at a yard sale four years ago - just because.

I don't listen to the radio very often, Christmas radio programs (year round) sure, but it seems like a missed out (or not) on the modern Christmas songs.

The album that sticks out in my mind as being the worst I heard was the one Neil Diamond did about five years ago. I didn't like it at all.

I worked in the gift shop of a truck stop after high school and they played lots of songs I didn't care for. I can't remember all of them (thankfully), but Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer and something about Santa being dead under the bed.

Gimme my Bing, Nat, Frank, Louis and Burl anytime!

I hate that Christmas Shoes song too! There's some other song that I hate as well although I can't think of the name. It's something about a poor girl named Maria who doesn't have anything to give to baby Jesus as a gift. She ends up setting her bird free as a gift. That song ticks me off for 2 reasons: 1. The person singing that song sings in the most annoying way. 2. I know it was for Jesus but, I don't approve of just opening a cage and letting your pet bird go! That gets me mad! Christmas should be jolly and happy. I don't want to listen to songs about people dying and domesticated animals being set free to fend for themselves!

Songs I change the Channel on:
Christmas Shoes, Mary Did You Know, Grownup Christmas List, Santa Baby, Jessica Simpson's version of "Baby it's cold outside", FELIZ NAVIDAD (I cant stand it)

I do like Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You", it makes me want to dance. However that's the ONLY song I like by her.

I also for whatever reason love to sing along to "grandma got run over by a reindeer" randomly =)
I also like Garth Brooks' The Gift (about Maria and the Nightingale). I think the song has a lot more meaning when you listen to the lyrics.

2 songs my friends hate but I love are "Wonderful Christmastime" and "Last Christmas".
