All,
I received a fun article submission about Black Friday that I'm going to post on the site later this week.
Black Friday, as you all know, is the day after Thanksgiving. It is called Black Friday because that is the so-called time when retailers go from operating in the red to operating in the black for the year. (This is a wife's tale, of course).
I'm just wondering though: how many of you participate in Black Friday? How many of you make it a tradition each year to participate in Black Friday?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
Jeff

on the news here they now call the monday after thanksgiving "Cyber Monday." Avoiding the holiday rush is cool but i still love the joy of fighting the crowds and finding the perfect gift in person.

I do not intentionally or traditionally shop on Black Friday. That is the day I like to put up the tree. As much as I love Christmas I do not like the crowds.

Usually 98% of my Christmas shopping is done long before Thanksgiving.
I am usually so worn out on the day after Thanksgiving, I couldn't go out if I had to.

I'll sometimes go, but that's the day I put up my decorations. I try to get my shopping done earlier, though I usually don't.

If I can avoid it, I do. But the last Black Friday I went (not so early) morning to Bed, Bath and Beyond to buy a 7' pre-lited CHRISTmas tree.
We bought one of the last ones!

I don't get excited about this day as I once did. Too many riots and fist fights over Elmos

Last time I went shopping on Black Friday was to take my little sis clothes shopping because she thought she could get some good deals. Yeah, right.
Did I mention that was the LAST time I went shopping on Black Friday???

I can't stand Black Friday. I hate shopping on that day...avoid it like the plague. I also don't like it because I don't get to spend it with my hubby...he has to work. :(

I went out last year at about seven PM to Target. I can't remember exactly why, but we actually needed something. To my surprise, they were still decently stocked and all the rabid consumers that think they're pulling one over on the retailers had gone home to lick their wounds I guess.
My tradition, however, just consists of Turkey sandwiches and breaking out whatever Christmas stuff I haven't cheated and brought out already. This year I'm making the turkey... :carve:
P.S. Am I the only one that's hearing Steely Dan in their head?

I went to Wal Mart late evening on black Friday once and it looked like Woodstock had taken place there, isles were trasy, empty shelves, tired workers, that smiley face had a subtle frown.

Every Black Friday, Mrs. Homelights and I get up at 4am and get ready and head to JCPenney for the free snowglobe they give out every year. We then go to KMart because ours have been giving away mystery giftcards every year - they have 50 to give out and 1 of them is $100 and 3 of them are $50 and the rest are $10
A few years back when they first did this I thought it was a promotion and not a real gift card - I was gonna toss it in the trash...it turned out to be a $50 card! WOW!
Anyhow, KMart opens at 6am so after looking there, we heard to Cracker Barrell for breakfast and then this year we'll hit Wal-Mart after that. Not for presents, just to enjoy the crowds and shopping in the air...

Having 2nd thoughts? I guess the low prices are not enough of a draw for me, and it's not because I'm loaded. I'm not. I just like the shopping experience to be enjoyable, not a scramble with half the people flashing gang signs and giving you that "oh, no you di'n't" look.

2nd thoughts in regards to the free snowglobe. I've started collecting those. Not sure I'm willing to get up at 5am and/or fight off a bunch of old ladies with purses the size of suitcases.

Remember that nice old lady who Andy and Barney caught shoplifting? Her coat was loaded with silverware. You just can't trust these old gals anymore. (MMC ladies excluded, of course! 8) )
