Christmas Day is our big feast, for us at least. And whether you eat on Christmas Eve or Day, what do you eat?

For us its...

1. Swedish Meatballs
2. Honey Ham
3. Mashed Potatoes
4. Green Beans
5. Jello Salad (Green Jello, Cabbage, Whip Cream, Pinapple)

And then random stuff we add in!

This year for dessert we are going to try this gorgeous cake we found in the special edition Southern Living we just got.

Christmas food is the best!!

In our family, the traditional feast varies very little from year to year. We always have:

Turkey
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes & gravy
Candied Yams
Green bean casserole
Baked Beans
Escalloped corn
Burn and serve rolls
A veggie tray with dip
Cranberry sauce

and for dessert:
Pumpkin pie, chocolate cream pie, banana pie and usually a fruit pie of some kind (apple, cherry, etc.) We're all about the pies on Christmas!

Nope...

You mix up jello and then once it starts to firm up, you add the shredded cabbage - Stir - Pineapple - Stir - and Marshmallows. Pour half of it into a mold and to the rest of it add whip cream and fold in. After letting the first layer firm up a little, you add the second layer and keep it in the fridge 'til firm!

No clue... I've never been outside of North America, So I am of no hope. Maybe around Mid-November, you should start looking in stores. It probobly isn't on shelves yet.

is advocaat not the same thing? We used to buy my Grandad a bottle every year. One year after I had left home he told me he hated the stuff but accepted it graciously lol

We normally have:

Yorkshire Puddings with gravy to start = Yorkshire does it proper way tha knows ;)

Creamy, Lemon & Pancetta Turkey
Roast Potatoes
Mashed Potatoes
Roast Parsnips
Savoy Cabbage
Sprouts
Carrots
Gravy

Then if anyone can move after that, and if I have cooked properly then they will have to wait at least 2 hours to eat anything else - I have a selection of chocolate cake, trifle, christmas cake and mince pies.
A selection of soft drinks, white wine (tho I am liking Ernst and Gallos White Grenache at the moment) Ale and Moniacks mead!

Going to have to look for an alternative stuffing for the turkey this year as mum is allergic to dairy :(

I love cabbage and jello salad sounds rather tempting!

Yeah, I think eggnog is the same as advocaat (or at least a close cousin!). I think the main difference is that you can't have advocaat without the booze in it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advocaat

I've found a recipe here, nothing you get get from Tesco or somewhere JOHNOR: http://thefoody.com/drinks/eggnog.html

My Christmas food is normally something like:

Don't generally have a starter, leaves more room for pudding ;-)

Turkey & Gammon (ham)
Stuffing
Little Sausauges
A bit of bacon perhaps...
Roast Pototoes
Roast Parsnips
Carrots (from the garden hopefully!)
Peas
Green/runner beans (frozen but grown in the garden during the summer)
Sprouts (yum yum yum, I love em!)
Cabbage
Gravy
Cranberry sauce (oh and in cold turkey sandwiches, ummmmmm)

Christmas pudding
Ice cream
Custard

If you want a 'alt' Christmas pudd, someimes we make a 'sponge pudding' and stick mincemeat and maple syrup (imported from vermont ;-) into the mixture. Very Christmassy but quite light.

Dad also always hopes that he gets given a box of 'after eight' mints early in the morning (do you have them in the USA? they're after dinner mints), cos as long as he opens them after eight (am) he can have some (cos it's after eight right?!)

What do we eat for Christmas? It's more of a question of what DON'T we eat! LOL
My mom was born and raised in upstate New York, but her former mother-in-law helped her fuse her northern-bred cooking with southern cooking. And in the 35 years that my mom has lived in the south, she's just studied the people around her.

One 10-12lb fried turkey
One 10-12lb roasted turkey
One ham
Garlic mashed potatoes
(homemade) Gravy
collard greens
green beans
dressing
yams
macaroni & cheese casserole
cranberry sauce
cabbage

Dessert:
Butter pound cake
sweet potato pie
pumpkin pie
apple pie
peach cobbler

No exaggerations. My family can put away some food! We never have enough room to put all the bowls/plates of food out. We have to circulate throughout the whole dining room/living room and kitchen filling our plates up. I keep joking that we're going to have to set up food in the bedrooms! My mom cooks EVERYTHING except the fried turkey, cabbage and two of the desserts. She only cooks on holidays and thankfully, we only eat like this at Christmas and Thanksgiving. We all throw caution to the wind and don our stretchy pants.

mmm, christmas food.

Firstly, on the topic of this jello/cabbage salad thingy. Totally not my cup of tea and wouldn't try it, but hey, if you like it, thats all that matters :) x

For us, Christmas Day food is always:

Turkey
Cranberry Sauce and Bread Sauce
Boiled Potato and Roast Potato
Sprouts
Carrots
Peas
Mini Sausages wrapped in bacon
Stuffing
Parsnips (mashed with butter and a little cream)
Cabbage

Desert we have a choice of a chololate-y pudding or Christmas Pud :) (I always go for the Chocolate option lol)

It took me YEARS & I mean YEARS to try the "cabbage/jello thingy"! It always manages to make it's way to at least 1 Christmas party every year & I would always turn my nose. But I did break down & try it a couple years ago after hearing so many times "you should try it, it's goooood!" & I was pleasantly surprised. It actually is pretty good...strange as it may sound!! I will eat it again.

What would happen if we tried for one Christmas -- to just give the children gifts -- and have the adults' job to bring food for the feast. Those who didn't cook, could bring fabulous things they had bought!! And the purpose would be (1) to watch the children go crazy with fun and (*2) set up buffets of food (like ReineV) - eat. Rest - jn a stupor. (Watch football or Christmas movies.) Watch the children play. A few hours later - eat! Go into a stupor again. Actually - it would be a lot of fun for me!

I am wondering if the person who created jello salad with cabbage in it was pregnant at the time!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_1_108.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZUxdm082YYUS)

I like cabbage - but not in jello. We put fruit in our jello, Cool Whip, and sprinkle with nuts!

We have a traditional, southern Thanksgiving/Christmas meal.
At our house:

roast turkey
ham

green bean casserole
potato casserole
corn casserole

Homemade rolls with loads of butter!

jello salad - minus the cabbage
green salad with dressings of choice (Ranch, Thousand Island, Balsamic)
fruit salad

pecan pie
pumpkin pie
apple pie
whatever other desserts we bring in at the time!
