When I was kid growing up in Toronto/Montreal I remember something special on Christmas Eve.
I'd be running round, high as a kite, getting under my mom's feet when she's suddenly say "Sshh, listen....." On the radio, there would be an interruption in programming and a disembodied voice would announce that a UFO was being tracked by ......some airforce base. They had few details at that time but would update as soon as they knew more. It would then revert back to the normal music. Throughout the day, there were further updates on the news and with special "breaking news" flashes. As it headed closer to late afternoon, early evening, the bulletins altered slightly. The authorities now had a very good idea as to the identity of the UFO and it was believed to be friendly. Its estimated time of arrival over...wherever it was I was listening to it (!) was 3am.
No doubt, whatsoever, who that UFO was. It was on the radio and the news so it had to be true.
I know we can now keep track of Santa's whereabouts on Christmas Eve more accurately than ever now, but there was something magical about those broadcasts........

PS
It was only in the 1970's I'm talking about!!!
