What do you put on the top of your Christmas tree? Any significance behind it? Any stories? What's your tradition? Who normally puts up the topper on?

For the last 9 years we have put an angel on the top of the tree. We used to have this star type topper which had belonged to the church we were attending. There's a bit of a story to how we got it. In the summer of 1989, the church was blown over by a tornado (it's been since rebuilt). The topper was cracked and they were going to throw it away, my hubby took it and we glued it together and used it until we moved to where we live now.

We really don't have a specific tradition of who puts on the topper - it's either hubby or me.

We don't have a specific tradition for tree toppers either. Something has to go up there though, that's for sure.

I've always gotten a kick over the Star or Angel debate that rages at the North Pole. Elf Ernest says that folks there are even split into two camps -- the group who says the angel came before the star and was thus more important and the group who says just the opposite.

This is going to sound so silly----but y'all know my heart.

Usually, because I have a large angel collection and some of them are tree toppers we use an angel.

Tonight when my dear daughter got home from university she wanted to put up our christmas tree. I had purchased a couple weeks ago 3 sets of poinsettia lights to use this year. The girls put those on the tree and because they glow red they decided to put a velvety santa hat on the top of our tree. SO this year our tree topper is a Santa Hat. I can deny those girls nothing--We have been enjoying that hat so far.

By the way, those of you who pray--pray for us tomorrow. We have to travel a bit over 2 hours up north to get to my brothers house. We have recieved 6 inches of snow today. Pray no slippery spots find us.

:) I voted for the Angel. My trees growing up always had an Angel on the top. When I moved out and started to decorate my own home and tree, I used a star at first and then a beautiful gold and green Santa. My parents gave me their Angel (my grandmother had given it to them for their first Christmas together) so I was using that Angel. Last year my mother asked for it back and said she would return it again, but she missed it.
I think this year my tree topper will be my cat, O'Malley. :D

Growing up it was my father who climbed the ladder to place the Angel atop our twelve foot Chrstmas Tree. I am the decorator in my home so I place the tree topper. My husband usually re-adjusts it just so he feels he has contributed something to the effort.

Your cat? Um...this is a delicate question, but....is he stuffed?

Your cat? Um...this is a delicate question, but....is he stuffed?

 Nope! My cute way of saying O'Malley is full of mischief and if I put a tree up, he'll be at the top in no time at all.

8-) Thanks for the delicate way you posed the question. You must be very kind.

I voted for star as that is what we use for the top of our trees. We do have angels around however for other areas.

We have always had an angel, I believe. Well, now that I think of it, my wife went victorian one year and we had a beautiful bow with streamers running down the tree. I grew up with an angel topper. It is still in business, I think. Probably 50 years old by now.

Io uso la stella da sempre, perchè rappresenta la stella che accompagnò le genti alla grotta...
Poi esiste una storiella molto carina su una stella e un pino, se volete la trovate sul mio blog.

I use the star from always, why he represents the star that accompanied people to the cove...
Then he exists ahistory much pretty on a star and pine (fir??), if you want the found ones on mine blog.

You put your gold fillings on the tree? We use a big victorian looking bow some years and an angel the others. I also do the tree at work and use a Christmas moose. Less to choose from there. I had to buy most of the decorations, though some nice ones were generously donated.

For years we had an ornament that was a topper. We have used a beautiful angel with fiber optic wings since the ornament was retired (which one of my children requested it for their tree so it's still in use).

Funny I'm not real sure what we had when I was a child but I know it most likely was breakable like everything else on the tree, I do think it was a star.

Didn't you go to college? My freshman year was the same year Animal House came out. I didn't stand a chance of normalcy. I even attained a 1.5 GPA. "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son." I gave up alcohol, but not the other two!

I grew up with an angel on top of the tree. Not a regal looking gossimer-winged sort, but a mussy-haired, dirty-faced kid angel. My mom gave it too me a few years ago and I now use it on the secondary tree.

When I moved out on my own, I started putting a large white dove on the top of my tree. I still do, although every year I debate between and rotate, the messy angel, the dove, and a 50's era lighted star.

I have a topper I got at Hallmark a few years back. It is Maxine climbing her tree with Floyd to put a yellow star on it. Its not lighted but it adds humor to my tree.
