Hey....I need some suggestions for christmas cds. I dont have very many and I want to expand my collection. I went to walmart last night and was disappointed in there minimal selection. So I think Im just gonna order some online, but I don't know which ones? So I'm asking you fellow christmas-lovers for your help. I love all kinds of music....love the rat pack, frank sinatra, pop music, the carpenters, alabama...etc....so im open to ur suggestions. thanks!!!

Great question whitexmas! Here is short tutorial of my approach.
For traditional Christmas tunes, choose one series like the Time Life Christmas Collection or Collectables Records Label Ultimate Christmas Collection (my personal favorite, around twenty-five tunes on each CD!). This will reduce the chances of duplicating songs in your personal collection. If you impulse buy a hodge podge of compilation CDs you end up with so many song duplications that you waste money.
When purchasing one artist CDs, compare the tunes on the CD with your compilation collection. For example, I don't have the Beach Boy Christmas CD, but by looking at my song list, I see that I have every track on their CD scattered around in my collection.
My attraction is more toward obscure tunes. There are several record labels offering, in my humble opinion, the best Christmas music out there! For that purpose, look up a thread around here called Christmas Music by Record Lable. To learn about non traditional Christmas music and artists, listen to public radio or internet Christmas broadcasts in season. Most of the time, they will tell you where the music may be purchased.
Organizing your music can be done in a spread sheet program or handwritten in a notebook. Since my i-Pod does all that for me, I don't keep any programs or notes. I just carry my i-Pod with me into record stores, etc. to make sure I don't duplicate. This works for my entire collection, not just Christmas tunes.
On a related note, to build an inexpensive collection, shop in pawn shops, thift stores, yard/tag sales, and used music stores. Always be sure the right CD is in the case and always check for scratches/damage! Many shop owners will give a discount for mulitable purchases. Expect to pay two to five dollars per CD or as low as fifty cents for scratched CDs. Don't forget to check out the forgotten vinyl and cassette offerings too!
My collection is augmented by hundreds of hours of recorded holiday radio programming and downloads from sites like www.FaLaLaLaLa.com.
Good luck with your collection, whitexmas!

For a modern twist to some Christmas carols try the CD "God With Us", it has various artist like Anointed; Michael W. Smith; Sandi Patty; CeCe Winans; Ray Boltz; Avalon and more. Songs include Joy to the Word; What child is This; Silent Nifght; Angels We Have Heard On High and many more for a total of 14.
I also love Amy Grant's Christmas CD's.
Bing Crosby's Christmas CD's are great.
I have Christmas with Patti Page which I also enjoy.

I love Joe Diffie's "Mr. Christmas!" This is a wonderful cd. He does the best version of "The Christmas Song" that I've heard. It's wonderful! I just got Marie Osmond's "Magic of Christmas!" For me, it's a real keeper! The fact that I've been a fan of the Osmond family for 38 years has something to do with it. But, it has some wonderful songs on it... most I've never heard before.

Really, I do like traditional Christmas tunes but feel them to be contrived & confining. Why buy the one hundred or so tunes that one can hear while shopping or from their "Holiday" broadcast station?
So, may I suggest?:

These are some of my (non-trad) favs:
The Christmas Sessions by MercyMe: http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Sessions-MercyMe/dp/B000AA304I/ Winter Wonderland/White Christmas is just funky and Joseph's Lullaby always gets me blubbing
Christmas Offerings by Third Day: http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Offerings-Third-Day/dp/B000I0QKJC/ Gotta love their take on Joy to the World!
City on a Hill: It's Christmas Time http://www.amazon.com/City-Hill-Its-Christmas-Time/dp/B00006IR5W/ Manger THrone is one of my fav songs ever - not just Christmas!
If you want a different take on trads try the piano versions by Doug Boldt: http://music.podshow.com/music/listeners/artistdetails.php?BandHash=f77d12dec5c4c4752490101 e895672b7 just beautiful and worth every cent! And all recorded on the bashed up old piano in the Church where he's the pastor!
Thanks for all the links RadioJonD, I'll have to look them up!

My number 1 all time favorite Christmas album is by Ray Conniff and the Conniff singers called We Wish you a Merry Christmas!!!!!!!
Yes! After Bing's CD, my next favorite is "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" (or was it "Christmas with Conniff"?). My dad used to play it when we were kids, in the 80's, and at the time, I hated it. So old-fashioned. Now I love it, for that very reason. It exemplifies an old-fashioned, fun Christmas, and brings back memories. If only I had appreciated it at the time.
PS - I have your icon as my PC wallpaper, and have used it every season for years. I love that picture! "O Christmas Tree" by Jesse Barnes.

I really enjoy the Christmas CDs by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Each CD (I think there are 2) has a few well-known classic tunes, a few remakes of more obscure tunes, and a couple of originals (or really obscure remakes). They're all great and really fun. I particularly like the CD titled "Boogie Woogie Christmas"

I really like the Casey Kasem All Time Christmas Favorites CD's for a compilation:

I agree w/ RadioJonD, if you buy an entire CD's of the same artist & also compilations, you are going to get duplicates, but I like to listen to a whole cd by the same singer...to sit & listen to a whole cd of Amy Grant, Randy Travis, Reba, Perry Como, etc.....ahhhh...that's cozy/Christmas to me!! :)

If you don't have it, you might like Christmas with the Rat Pack. Frank Sintra has a good Christmas CD, too. Any of the Christmas lounge compilations would be a good choice for you. An old, OOP Starbucks CD called Mistletoe and Merriment has the type of music you like.

I can't believe I forgot to mention one of my all time favorites!
A Partridge Family Christmas Card Album!
My mom bought this in the late sixties/early seventies and we listened to it growing up--it was always a favorite! Several years ago, Walgreens had the CD and I bought it. It is really the one piece of music that really brings back my childhood memories.

The old standards mostly for me. Thought I do really like Mel Torme's Christmas cd.
Same goes for Harry Connick, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, the Time Life series.
I just picked up a TSO cd this weekend. I hear they put on quite a show.
They are here on Thursday, but I'm already going to Jethro Tull on friday. They too have a Christmas CD, which I also have.

I too like the CDs with a variety of artists. I prefer the classics to the remix made by other artist. The one cd I tend to listen to is my Kenny G...no singing just music..it's sooo relaxing to me. It really puts me in a great mood!
