What is the difference between these two? I hear both terms alot and didn't know if they are the same thing? :march:

Stuffing and dressing are interchangeable terms. Stuffing is the older word, dating back from the middle of the 16th-century, when it replaced the term forcemeat, which came from the French verb farcir (to stuff). Dressing became popular in Victorian times, when the notion of stuffing didn't sound mannerly. Today, stuffing is used more in the Eastern and Southern states, while dressing is the accepted term in the West.

Well there you go - I didn't know that!! I always thought that stuffing was obviously what was "stuffed" into the turkey and the dressing was the extra bits like sausages and bacon etc. Dressing also worked for anything else you might have other than turkey, like a ham or something

I'm really glad to know the real explanation!!!!!!

nowadays its only called dressing if it doesnt go in the bird, stuffing stuffs.

I saw this on the Food Network. Dressing is the same ingredients as stuffing, but it is baked by itself and not stuffed in the bird.

I make dressing because I stuff my bird with herbs and citrus fruit. It makes for the moistest tastiest meat ever!!!!

I heard that stuffing was the original term, but during the victorian era it changed to Dressing for it wasn't as proper (heard this on Good Eats on the food network)
