View Full Version : When a Gift Card Isn't a Gift

This is a story from my local news.
I still have gift cards from last year! (They dont have fines or limits). I hope I don't get too many this year.

A recent survey shows how popular gift cars are: Six out of 10 shoppers said they plan to buy one this holiday season. But Consumer Reports warns that unredeemed gift cards are easy money for retailers and lost money for consumers.

Gift card buyers will likely put $35 billion into retailers' cash registers this holiday season. Gift cards are easy to buy; they're online, in drug and grocery stores, as well as in retail stores and shopping malls. Even banks offer gift cards.

Consumer Reports, however, is so concerned about the pitfalls of gift cards that the group paid for a full-page ad in Tuesday's New York Times. The ad warns that gift cards often do not end up as gifts, going unused and wasting buyers' money.

Their recent survey backs up that warning: More than 25 percent of those who received gifts cards a year ago still have not used at least one of them. Consumers listed their biggest reasons for not using them: no time to shop, not finding what they wanted at stores, and simply forgetting about the cards.

"This year, approximately $8 billion in gift cards will never be used," Amanda Walker with Consumer Reports said. "They may be lost, or they may expire before they're cashed. But ultimately, it's money in the bank for the businesses that issue them."
If you are certain that someone on your list will use a gift card, your next move is to shop carefully. Many cards have expiration dates and added fees, particularly bank-issued cards.

"Take the I-Card Gift Card. A $25 maintenance fee is automatically deducted after six months and again every six months thereafter," Walker said.
Some bank-issued cards, including some from American Express and Visa, carry purchase fees of anywhere from $2 to $10.

Walker added another warning: "You can't assume bank-issued gift cards are universally accepted, as the issuers will often have you believe."
Another consideration is whether the gift card can be replaced if it is lost or stolen. Some cards cannot be, while proof of purchase must be provided for others. Also read the fine print to see if the card has an expiration date.
If you do buy a gift card this holiday season, check the terms and conditions, so your gift card does not become a worthless piece of plastic. Or, just cash – it never expires, and you can spend it anywhere.

The state of California pretty much straightened out the whole gift card thing. You pretty much can't have expiration dates on them any more and there are caps on fees you can charge.

I can tell you that I've never let a gift card sit for more than a week, personally.

And this whole gift card thing has changed retail for the week after Christmas in a HUGE way.

That's exactly why as retailers we push them. I'm trying to get the company to do a "spend your gift card" event. For every person who comes in with a gift card we give them a little something extra.

What's weird to me is that a certain percentage of gift cards never get redeemed. Where do they go?

I won't give a gift card. It takes no imagination. I also won't buy a girl flowers on Valentines day or a Birthday. To me it seems like you really didn't try.

Here, Here! For year's I've refused to observe Valentine's Day. I will simply NOT be manipulated into saying "I Love You". No way. I might get my wife something the day before or the day after...but never does she get a thing on the day. Hummmppph!

Yes I buy my Girlfriend flowers. I usually buy my Girl flowers just because. I just don't buy them as a gift on Valentines day or her Birthday. It is just dosen't take any effort it seems lazy to me. Like a Generic present.

Generic present, what a great term I'll have to remember that. I like giving people generic presents just cos it's great fun to do. I think the concept of 'un-birthdays' as in Alice in Wonderland has got a lot to it as well... when it's not your birthday it's your un-birthday - so happy un-birthday to me! ;-)

My Dad feels the same as you about St V's day Jeff!

2 things

1) As a girl I LOVE getting roses on valentines, and usually I get some around christmas/my birthday/anniversary. I LOVE them!

I think that is the last .20 cents on a card that doesn't get spent when you buy an item. Also the people that lose/forget/damage the cards.

Wouldn't you prefer something that took a little more thought. I think that picking out gift instead of going with the old stand buy makes it even more special. Roses on Valentines day is like a Tie on Fathers day. I would like to be a little more creative than that.

Usually it's roses + a real gift. Also usually he gets the unusual colorful roses instead of regular red. I think my favorite was a dark pink with orange outlines. I love the way they smell.

Thats cool I just don't like to buy flowers for days like that. I buy my girlfriend flowers just because quite often.

Exactly -- just because in the middle of August means a lot more than joining the frenzy in February.

[Of course, using that logic I now have an excuse to put off sending my Christmas cards till March]

expiry dates here in Ontario Canada are no longer allowed on gift cards. I do not always buy them myself, but have received them. My ex buys them for the kids all the time (only gift he gives now as they are easier for him) The ones I get I always use.

I don't care to receive gift cards myself. If I do get one, I make it a point to use it within a month. I usually don't give them, unless we have a gift card exchange, but then we can request them from certain places. I am going to buy them this year, though. I have some 15 (or so) nieces and nephews that I don't know well. I'd just as soon get them a gift card than something that they would have no interest in. Last year, I shopped for gifts and didn't think they were received all that well. We'll see how it goes, though. I do plan on taking the time to wrap them in a unique way.

I don't usually buy gift cards, but I have for teenagers who seem to have everything, and can't tell me what they want. They are always accepted with huge smiles

I like giving gift cards as stocking stuffers -- and I really enjoy receiving them, too. My husband and I really appreciate using them to go to restaurants and other places we'd otherwise never get to.

We sometimes receive them at work for perks...! (The Starbuck's card are always a treat for staff...!)

I bought my daughter a gift card for Tim Horton's, a very popular donut shop here in Canada. They have an outlet at the college she attends, so I got her the card to make it easier when at school. much to our surprise, they will not take it there. Still no answer as to why. This is a card put out by them, rechargeable and highly advertised. No one seems to know why this is the only outlet that will not take it.

I like gift cards, they usually are always spent either on DvD's or books I make it point to tell people if they are unsure what to buy me for a gift, a gift card will do fine.

I’ve never met a gift card I couldn’t deplete! Especially the i-tunes cards!

I always enjoy getting gift cards. I can always find something to spend them on.
