View Full Version : Bummed...had to be a Scrooge.

As you all know, I LOVE Christmas and everything associated with it and I'm super bummed that I was forced to play "Scrooge" yesterday. :(

I work at a church and we do a Charity Christmas shop each year. Basically, we have names submitted to us by local social service agencies and we then contact the families and ask if they'd like to participate. If they would like to, all they have to do is return the self addressed, stamped envelope to our office by the deadline.

It's a great program because if the families agree to participate the parents get to come and "shop" for their kids Christmas gifts. Each child gets three brand new gifts ($30 gift, $20 gift and a $15 gift) along with stocking stuffers (we even wrap the gifts and provide any batteries that they might need) and the family gets a food basket with gift certificates for additional food.

However, this year we had a person come to us nearly a month after the deadline for returning the cards and say that she lost her card and had never returned it. Well, losing the card isn't a huge deal, we've had people do that before, but they always contact us within time limits to let us know they'd like to participate. This lady didn't. Now we're a week out from the event (and a month beyond the final deadline), all the toys, food baskets, etc. have been purchased and are put together. Also, when she failed to return her card or contact us in any way, we filled her spot with another family.

So, the people in charge made the decision that it was simply too late to add another family. I get that, I really do. Unfortunately, if we don't have a hard line cut-off then we'll have dozens of families showing up that we didn't plan for and we won't have the resources to help them all. I don't think the decision was wrong, but somehow, I ended up having to be the person to call this woman and tell her that, since she'd missed the deadline by more than a month, there really isn't anything we can do to help her. :(

I feel horrible.

I would of hated to make that call. Hopefully she understood.

I can't describe how upset I was to have to make the phone call. I was crying about it when I got home last night. :( I think she "understood" but she wasn't very understanding, if that makes any sense. She was understandably upset and somewhat angry (probably because she now doesn't know what she's going to do to provide Christmas for her kids).

I just can't seem to shake this horrible feeling.

How much money would it take to provide this Christmas for her? Can we all pitch in and do it ourselves? I feel horrible and I didn't have to make that call.

You know, DH and I were talking about this (because I've been so bummed about it) and he suggested that perhaps he and I take a look at our finances and see if we could play "Secret Santa" for the family. Because she was on the original list, I have all her information (including kids ages & toy preferences) so we could go shopping and then leave the stuff on their porch or something like that.

We're going to talk a bit more about it tonight and see what we can do because this is just getting to me. I understand the logic behind saying "no" (she was given ample opportunity to reply to the invitation and all she had to do was pop the self-addressed, stamped post-card in the mailbox or call the church and let us know she'd lost it) but the emotional side of me keeps thinking about kids waking up on Christmas morning with no gifts, no magic, no Santa...:(

I work at a local food bank (that also gives away clothing and house hold items to those in need)
This place also gives away Christmas gifts and those who need it also have a deadline for applying for this service.
The lady who runs this wonderful place has a heart of gold and even if it meant using her own money, she would never turn anyone away if it was possible. However, it is not always possible to help, no matter how much you want to.
But we do what we can, and pray that someone will step in to fill the gap when there are still needs and nothing left in our bin to fill that need.
If things work out, maybe you and your husband will be the gap filler, if not, start praying that someone else will step in to do it.
A willing heart is a warm heart, and I can feel the warmth of yours all the way over here!

Christmasstar..I hope all of this has worked out. Please keep me posted too. I wouldn't mind helping out as well.
