Reindeer have quietly been gathering at Santa’s Stables since mid-October. With little fanfare, Santa announced the opening of the Reindeer games for this weekend. Last year, the games were closed off to the public because of pressure from the media to cover the event. So now only the reindeer know when the actual games are going to be held.

Traditionally all the participating reindeer march in a parade before gathered crowds here at the North Pole, with the crowning moment being the arrival of Santa’s sleigh pulled by the Original Eight, as they are known. This event transpired today without the glare of television lights or studio analysts.

Experts predict a big year from several returning reindeer. Donner, who had a disappointing showing in the games last year, is expected to rebound this year. Hercules, an unusually large and gifted reindeer who trains in Norway, is another who many predict will do well. A number of young newcomers are expected to participate, but for the first time in many years there are no particular standouts in the crowd.

The reindeer games are a chance for reindeer to compete for recognition and for placement in key support positions in the Santa effort of Operation Merry Christmas 2005. Many reindeer, such as Pokey, have distinguished themselves in the games to gain high profile assignments on Christmas Eve. Since becoming one of Santa’s starting reindeer is almost impossible, these games provide all reindeer hope of participating in other ways.
