Good for you, Lorn!

And a Good Morning to everyone!

It's bright and sunny here in Raleigh at this hour with our temp standing at just a tad under 60. No rain predicted for the opening of our state fair this afternoon. We will probably go on Sunday. Always look forward to it!

OK, the count:
Days to the Season: 28
Days to Christmas Day: 70
Yes, that's right! A mere 4 weeks from today sees the launch of Christmas Season 2008. Then, only 6 weeks from that point until Christmas Day itself. Wow!

Have a Thrilling Thursday/Fantastic Friday Eve, everyone!

i've been to the park today, it was stunning!

the leaves were orange and brown, the air was crisp and cold, i went to see the ducks at the lake and wandered over the little bridges, it felt so christmassy!

i went to my mum's yesterday and the house is getting decorated, as soon as i walked in i screamed "IT SMELLS LIKE CHRISTMAS!!!!" they all think i am a nutter, but the smell of paint reminds me of the festive season? lol!

Johnor -- when you said your mom's house is getting decorated.... i thought you meant decorated for Christmas!!! "How cool!" I thought. Then I figured out you meant "decorated - painted, etc.". Well, that is good too, of course..... Good for you for screaming "It smells like Christmas!" I wish more people screamed in delight at wonderful things. I would love it if someone walked into my house and screamed that!

Anyway, have a good day everybody!

Indeed, Dom, Halloween is fast approaching. And if THAT doesn't get you into the holiday spirit, nothing will!

As such, I am adding Halloween to the countdown:
Days to the Season: 27 (That's right, under 4 weeks, now!)
Days to Christmas Day: 69 (That's also right - under 10 weeks!)
Days to Halloween: 14 (Boo!...meaning Yay!, of course)

A rainy morning here in Raleigh.
(If those little tiny willow oak leaves aren't bad enough dry, try wet ones!)
We should top out at 70 today and currently stand at 67.

Our state fair opened yesterday afternoon.
We live not far from the fairgrounds and they have fireworks there each night during the fair. So it sounds a little like the distant rumble of thunder every evening for 11 days between 9:10 and 9:25! I love it.

Have a Fabulous Friday, Friends! (How can Fridays be otherwise?)
I hope everyone is ready for a Wonderous Weekend.

So close! I am enjoying Christmas music on my iPod on my walk to work in the morning. Such a wonderful feeling, the leaves crunching under my boots... and joyful music in my ears.

I need to get started on my holiday crafts and freezing foods.

It's a chilly day in Chicago (34 degrees this morning!) but the sun is out and there is much for which I am grateful!

It's a chilly 55 degrees outside at this hour here in Raleigh and is not supposed to get out of the 50's all day.
At least it's sunny with no rain in the forecast.

How does our count stand on this fine Saturday morning?
Well, let's check:
Days to the Season: 26
Days to Christmas Day: 68
Days to Halloween: 13 (Under 2 weeks to go!)
Moving right along, we are. Moving right along. I can almost taste it.

Have a Stupendous Saturday, everyone!

Good Morning and Happy Sunday! I am going to buy more bags of Halloween candy for the trick or treaters! I have gotten suggestions to buy the miniatures of Kit Kat, Hershey Assorted Bars and Snickers. Those will be the main kinds - but I will add in a few more kinds. I will string some orange miniature lights outside too. I don't want to turn them on too early. In the past, I have just turned them on Halloween night. Maybe earlier this year.

Personally, I look at Halloween as a part of the Christmas celebrations. It is so magical for the children. It starts the season of fun and decorating and parties (and food treats!)

Actually, if you are REAL, REAL nice and don't spill any coffee on me, I just MIGHT take a photo of our mall Starbucks for you. (Now if only that darn place would put up some Christmas decorations! They went bare all season, last year.)

Good Morning, everyone!!
It's bright and sunny but only 48 at this hour here in Raleigh.
No matter. We are off to the State Fair, shortly.
Will take my camera along, of course! There are usually one or two Christmas displays.

Our count:
Days to the Season: 25
Days to Christmas Day: 67
Days to Halloween: 12
"Closer and closer and closer we go....
And where we stop, everybody knows!"

Have a Super Sunday, my fellow Christmas Comrades.

We went to see "Going to See Rachel's Wedding" with Anne Hathaway on Friday.

The blurb said "......sometimes hilarious."

Let me tell you, this was the most depressing, heavy movie I have seen in decades! Yes, it was excellent. But you really really really have to be prepared and strong to see this movie. There was not a nanosecond of "hilarious".

Last night as we were going out, my neighbour up the street was stringing his icicle lights. My wife told me not too look at them because she didn't want me to get any ideas. I guess she figured it would be tacky if the front yard was decorated for Christmas while the back yard is already decorated for Halloween. I guess singing christmas lights don't really go very well with strobe lights and pumpkins that play the theme from halloween.

Our little street corner which is just 5 minutes from McAddenville (Christmas town) is sort of a mini christmas town and always in the papers up here every year. We usually have cars constantly creeping up and down our street at Christmas. God I love it.

Unchosen, Fragmnts, I think Christmas icicle lights would look just fine out with the Halloween lights. I have had frost here along with the rain already and that makes icicles. hee hee. You just wouldnt have to plug them in until night after Halloween. That way you will be a little a bit a head when it comes to putting up the rest of your lights.

We are in full fall here. The trees are so beautiful this year. Probably because we have had some good hard frosts already.

Went to Walmart today and boy their whole seasonal section is decorated to the hilt for Christmas already. Gee it was wonderful but they didn't have any new nutcrackers yet this year. sniff sniff.

Hey Cedar, been too long. Way to quiet.

happy Tuesday eve everyone.. evenyou Crown.. who I am so sure is asleep on the couch as we speak....
Couch! One of my favorite words!

Good Morning, folks.

It's a great day after a great night's sleep (in my bed, although I have been known to fall asleep on my couch in the evening and just stay there until morning).
The birds are singing, the sun is shining, it's calm and all is right with the world (except that it is a bit chilly, at 42).

Our count:
Days to the Season: 22 (Hey! Three weeks from tomorrow, guys!)
Days to Christmas Day: 64
Days to Halloween: 9 (Single digits are here!)
(We just keep getting closerer and closerer, don't we?)

Thanks for joining me again at the peak of the week this morning, Holiday. That weekend view looks great, as usual.
And slowly the view to the Season is clearing in the mist!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday, everyone!

What would you have done without it??? ;-) Every time I took a sip of my coffee today I said "OH YUM!!!" I haven't tried the tiramisu coffee flavoring but I saw they had it at Walmart. I thought it kind of funny that tiramisu is a coffee flavored dessert & now they have a coffee flavoring that tastes like...coffee!!! Lol!!

Maureen -- please tell me that is a joke!!! The thought of people being without half-and-half for coffee.... is too awful!!! And the creamers are owned by Nestle - which I think is a global company based in Switzerland, isn't it? That is closer to Scotland than it is to the USA!

If we have to have all the disadvantages of having a global economy...... then I think we deserve all the luscious creams and cream-flavored things from the world economy to put in our coffee! All the luscious things produced in the whole world must be available for our coffee! And at darn cheap prices too! If they mess with our coffee.... the Boston Tea Party will look like child's play!

Good Morning, Friends! Happy Thursday To You!!!

I bought three more bags of Halloween candy for the trick or treaters. I have to hide them from my husband. (He loves chocolate so much!) He somehow senses when I am bringing chocolate into the house. He gets up from his desk and starts wandering around. He sort of looks like a zombie from the movie "The Night of The Living Dead". His eyes have a faraway look. Some primitive instinct has told him that chocolate is near. He becomes disturbed and agitated, although he doesn't know why. He keeps searching through the grocery bags. (OF course, I removed the chocolate and hid it before I brought the bags into the house.) I have learned to buy some of his most favorite healthy treats - in order to distract him. He loves the "Crispick" apples -- which are available now (but only for a short season. I guess they don't store well.)

He will accept a Crispick apple. But he is not fully content. For an hour or so longer, he will occasionally prowl the house.... looking.... looking....

Don't worry -- he eats as much chocolate as he likes on Halloween night, when the doorbell starts ringing. I can't hide the candy any longer at that point.

Maureen

Coffee Mate is a well-known creamer but they can also get it in liquid form

http://www.coffee-mate.com/Products.aspx

That shows the flavours.

Our Coffee Mate is just your ordinary flavoured powder stuff. Our other alternative is cream; single double or whipping. Over the pond there is a wonderful thing called half and half which is a mix of 1/2 whole milk and ― cream, typically used as a cream in coffee. Half-and-half does not whip, but it can be used in place of whipping (heavy) cream in many recipes for less fat cooking.

Okay, just back from a recon. in our local supermarket. In the chiller cabinet was milk (leaded, partially leaded and unleaded), cream (single, double, whipping), strawberry, chocolate and banana milkshakes, sour cream and soya milk. There was also fresh custard and creme fraiche.

In the coffee aisle was powdered Coffee Mate - original and "lite".

good morning all,

crisis! my father has been away on holiday, got into the airport this morning and was waiting for his eldest son (my half brother) to pick him up, he has got my dad's car and my dad has already give him gas/petrol money. he waited over an hour and called him, anyway my half brother has switched his phone off!!!! my dad lost his bank card yesterday whilst on holiday (don't worry, he has cancelled it) and keeps no cash at his home. my half brother is known for being unreliable and is a bit of a bad egg. i would pick him up but i have never driven on a motorway and would either a) kill myself or b) most certainly get lost in the wilderness.

anyway, i have to lend him the cash and the cab is going to cost £60/$120 - what a waste :-?

SparkleNana

Johnor ---oh my gosh, delicious coffee right away for you and your father!! Thank goodness you were available to deal with the crisis for your Dad!

So your Dad had two mommas for his children. It looks like you got the best deal on mommas. (And did you get to live with your Dad while you were growing up? And your half-brother did not get to live with your Dad while he was growing up?)

You turned out to be a fun, charming AND responsible person. It looks like your half-brother missed out on a lot of that good parental nurturing while he was growing up. (In fact, I wonder if your half-brother got "left at the airport" -- so to speak -- too many times while he was growing up. And is acting out some of that hurt now.)

After he "recovers" from his vacation and this terrible ending to the trip, your Dad might want to think about the experiences his son had growing up without his Dad. As a parent, i know too well how ALL parents make a boatload of mistakes raising their kids. Especially me. And we never outgrow our need for our parents love and approval!

that's right! i grew up with my dad, my half brother didn't, he only lived with my dad until he was 2. my father married young and had my half brother with his first wife, unfortunately when they split, she stopped my father from seeing him, she made lots of lies up in court and my father could only see his son on her say so. basically, that was very infrequently, she re married and didn't want my dad to have anything to do with my half brother. when my half brother was 14, my dad started seeing him frequently, lavished him with gifts, love and tried to make up for lost time. unfortunately, it was too late, he resented my dad and seemed to not have any respect for his elders. my dad has give him chance after chance to change his ways, but he clearly does not want to. it's a shame they will never have the relationship a father and son should have.

my half brother is 7 years older than me, but acts seven years younger unfortunately. part of me really feels sorry for him, he seems to have a real chip on his shoulder. part of me feels really sorry for myself, i love my father dearly, but i shoulder alot of responsibility for him, way more than a young woman should.

It should be clearing by this afternoon, however, and they say tomorrow will be sunny and 70. Great!

Our count for Saturday:

Days to Christmas Day: 61
Days to Halloween: 6 (Under a week, now!)
Boy! We are really starting to close in, aren't we?

Johnor - you have a lot of understanding about human relationships. They are complicated and cause such huge emotions in us.

Please skip this part when it gets boring. (Skip beginning here.) As a parent of three adult children, I believe that some children are "easy" from birth. One of my three children would have turned out spectacularly good - no matter who raised that child. (Her father - my husband - and I agree on that. That child would have turned out great, no matter who raised that child!)

The other two children, which we had together, were challenging -- as I think most children are. I have seen parents try to "prove" that they are "good" parents -- using the example of one child as successful (always the "easy" child.) The parents then disown any responsibility for the more challenging children, who did not receive adequate parenting -- and did not "turn out well".)

In my humble opinion, your father has a lifelong responsibility to try to make up for the damage he has done to his son. Your father could go into therapy with his son, and allow his son to receive help from the therapist, and love and support from his father.

Since your father explains his lack of fathering to his son as being "all the mothers fault, because the incredibly powerful mother confused the legal system about your fathers' virtues" -- well, his reasons sound like nothing but excuses to another parent (me).

Please do not allow your father to blame "his son" for being "the bad one". Actually, there are frequent mishaps and miscommunications in airport pickups. Sometimes the one doing the "pickup" has been given the wrong time for the pickup - or the wrong date. When I need someone to pick me up at the airport (after so many mishaps) -- I print out my departure and arrival information -- and leave it taped to the dashboard. Everyone gets confused sometimes.

I have no interest in having any of my children be given the label of "irresponsible, damaged, or whatever". Did your Dad telephone your brother a day in advance of his arrival, and leave a reminder on his cell phone? Could your Dad have some investment in being the "good victim" of your "bad" brother?

Wonderful, charming, delightful, successful people can be really bad parents. As Jacqueline Kennedy said, "If you mess up raising your children, it really doesn't matter what else you do."

My opinion. Friends on this board disagree about lots of things -- politics, flavors of ice cream, religion.... we can disagree on parenting too ----- and still respect and love each other as members of our big safe family.

sparklenana- i always enjoy reading your posts, you view things in such an intelligent way and you seem like a wonderful person, although i have to diasgree, my father did not mess my brother up. my father and his mother messed him up. i have met his mother, she is nothing short of dangerous. she is a religious fanatic with a foul temper and a very manipulative nature. when she divorced my father she told the court that my father would make my brother sit in a room and watch horror films, she said he would go out and leave my brother on his own (this was not true, hand on heart i am 23 years old and he still wouldn't approve of me watching violent, horror films, he is ridiculously protective). in the end the court said my dad could not see my brother. (this was 25 years ago when father's had very few rights, they still don't have enough rights these days in my opinion) my father however, wrote letters to my brother, would just turn up at the school to see him for 10 minutes afterwards, would beg and plead with his mother to be reasonable but she would not listen until my brother was old enough to make his own mind up (my father has never told me this in detail, his sister has, she says he cried like a baby when this was all going on and it broke the families heart). of course, my dad maybe could of and should of done more, but he has never been the type of father to turn a blind eye to his kids, he has many faults but he is a decent parent, i honestly think he tries his best, i have always felt loved.

over the last few years my brother has stolen off my father, trashed my father's house with wild parties and basically been nothing but a pain in the behind. that being said my father will never disown him, he loves him and will continue to give him chance after chance.

gosh, it's hard being a parent isn't it? hats off to all of you, sometimes i think i will never be cut out for it! i bet it's the hardest job in the world.

JOHNOR~ Being a parent is the hardest job in the world, but it is the most enjoyable and rewarding. There is nothing like it in the world. I didn't know what real, true, self-sacrificing, self-giving love was until I had children. Words cannot express the depth of love I feel for my children. I would be more than willing to give up my life for them without hesitation. I can't imagine my life without them.

Johnor -- thank you for continuing our conversation about parenting, and families. It is a fascinating topic. I think you will be a wonderful parent because you realize that it is a difficult job! Marrying a person you love passionately really really helps with the parenting (and if they have a good sense of humor, that helps a lot too!)

It also helps if your children don't turn out to be the spawn of the devil!! I was lucky but my friend wasn't until the child turned about 10!!!

@sparklenana...I agree with most You wrote....but I know many cases where the women were evil and did not let their kids see their fathers...and I hate.....really hate women like that...a close friend from my finace is in a situation like that....heīs not an angel relationship wise....but he does and tried to do everything he could to see the girls...so of course I donīt know how itīs in Johnorīs family...If Johnors pops is like her...he will not be the kind of man who will not take care of his son by his own will.....so I pretty much think....the mother of that half-brother is a bad person....and the son is the one who pays for it, by being the way he is and by not having a good relationship with his father.

on a lighter side of note......Itīs only 59days.....We are below the 60s!!!! YAY!!!

Good Morning, All!

Another bright, sunny one here in Raleigh, where we stand at 51 degrees.

We do not go off Daylight Savings Time here in the US until Nov 2.
(I personally prefer regular time. I hate getting up when it is still dark.
And like Johnor, I don't mind it getting darker earlier in the evening this time of year. It just seems proper and appropriate for this time of year!)

OK, our morning count:
Days to the Season: 18
Days to Christmas Day: 60
Days to Halloween: 5 (Wow! Really getting close to that first holiday!)

Have a Super Sunday, friends. And get all rested up to begin moving yet another week closer to our Special Season!

Good Morning Everyone!
A chilly day here today. The hi being only 39. Big change compared to yesterday that's for sure. Should be back up into the 50's tomorrow and 60's the following day. Had a great time last night. I took my daughter, her friend and my niece rollerskating. They had a Halloween party going on at the rink. They had costume judging. My niece got 2nd place and won a few prizes. They even had 4 pumpkin shaped piņatas. So they all ended up with a ton of candy. I hope everyone has a nice Sunday.

Can we have a group vote on when the Christmas season begins? The current arbitrary date (http://www.mymerrychristmas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7972) used here (November 13) didn't match anyone's in another thread (http://www.mymerrychristmas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11601) asking when Christmas begins for us. You are welcome to countdown whatever days appeal to you. We've been using the same method for many years. It was born out of fun and merriment rather than polls and voting. You can celebrate Chrsitmas whenever you want, I do.

I celebrate it through music, movies, books, writing, visiting festive forums, shopping all year, but in here, I'm content with our traditional countdown.

Gee! What a wave of nostalgia brought on by talk of Christmas.com!
Those were fun days, too. Remember the simple forum board where you could not post pictures or even edit spelling errors? (Sort of like our grandparents or great-grandparents speaking whistfully of the horse-and-buggy days)
We were a close-knit group, weren't we?

Yes, Wenceslaus, November 13 is indeed arbitrary. No one can really pinpoint exactly when the "Christmas Season" really begins, since it starts for each person differently.
Back in 2003 (at C.com) I proposed November 13 as a possible date to begin our Season count on that site (for the reasons stated in post one of this thread). The idea was seconded by my dear friend Binger and gradually adopted by the thread participants as a whole.
After a bit, I introduced the idea over at The Christmas Place and ran a dual count on those 2 sites until C.com went down. We then continued at TXP until it failed and I began counting here in July (August?) of last year.

That's a brief history of what we are doing with the Season count.
If the majority would like to change the date, we could certainly consider doing that. (Of course, that would require a complete overhaul of our milestone chart!)

With that said, Good Morning, fellow Christmas Comrades!

A cold one here in Raleigh this morning, where we stand at 40.
But as usual, it is calm and sunny!

Our count:
Days to the Season: 16 (Barely over 2 weeks!)
Days to Christmas Day: 58
Days to Halloween: 3 (Really closing in!)

Have a Terrific Tuesday, everyone!

Oh! And a travel head's up. We are heading to the coast to winterize and shut down our cottage over there and will be leaving Saturday.
Will need a volunteer to do the count for Sunday through Tuesday mornings, and quite possibly Wednesday. Takers?

I like the 13th Crown...I believe it is six weeks of Christmas season and that suits me just fine!!! I'd be hard pressed to find a reason to change it at this late date!

And Binger...02 sounds about right!!! Perhaps even before that...I can remember sitting in the kitchen of my apartment and visiting Christmas.com...And we moved into our house in 02...A long time though, no matter how you slice it...And through thick and thin, Christmas friends have been my home base, my lifeline to things red and green...Nobody understands me like folks here do...And I like to think others feel the same...

Crown, I'll volunteer to watch over the countdown!!! And if I miss a day, I'm sure your other fans will grab the chance to post in your stead.

Awwwwe, christmas.com ~ what a fond memory!! It's amazing how far we've come since then! It went down in or around October of 2002 ~ right before the Christmas season! What a sad day!! Thought I had finally found a great place to share my love of Christmas w/ other people who love it as much as me & then I thought I lost contact with them forever!! But here we are! YAY!!! Thank goodness a few of us had exchanged emails, etc. & were able to re-group! If you look back on the wayback machine, Oct. 1st 2002 is still the old christmas.com format, but Oct. 10, 2002 is the new c.com format. I found where I had posted on Oct. 2, 2002...but there are still posts on Oct. 16, 2002. Hmmm... I still think it's a shame that the people who have the rights to "christmas.com" don't even have a forum...you would think christmas.com would be the coolest place on the internet, but it's definately NOT...THIS is the coolest place on the inernet!!! :wiggy:

Holiday - Good Morning!!! It is "Italian" Sweet Cram. I think they are going to invent "Irish Sweet Cream" next. I also heard about "Peppermint Mocha" on MagicalHolidayHome --- and that sounds wonderful too. I am still waiting for someone to try "Tiramisu" flavoring for coffee. So many flavors. So little time.

Yesterday, my local drug store was collecting all the remaining Halloween decorations down to a small area at the front of the shelves. And was unpacking huge cardboard boxes of Christmas decorations.
