Mrs. Claus' secret mission is a secret no longer: she is making a new home for the elves this Christmas.
"We have been through this before," said Mrs. Claus in a phone call with me this morning. "The Bah Humbug virus is a serious thing. Nothing is worse than a sick elf. Santa is just being safe, we do not have to be at the North Pole to be a family working on Christmas. Christmas can happen no matter where you are!"
Every Christmas Eve there is a big party at the Claus residence. From the sound of it, Santa and Mrs. Claus do not expect to hold the party at their house this year. And from the look of it, elves are still leaving the North Pole in a hurry. Over at Santa's Stables, of course, everyone left more than a week ago. The elves in the workshop moved yesterday, the Wrapping Department moves today, the stocking department tomorrow and even the Department In Charge of Listing All the Departments is moving their elves later this week.
Santa has asked me and my team here in Public Relations to stay. Santa's mailroom is staying. And the guys over in the Weather Department are staying. Everyone else is leaving the North Pole. It is starting to become a very different Christmas!
