The day before Thanksgiving I made an impulse purchase of a new television. Well, maybe not so impulsive because our old set died in June and I had no reason to replace it because I rarely if ever watch TV. I do have a rather complex home theater set up but that's for movies, not TV.

So, I went out and purchased a new flat panel HD TV just so I could watch a few Christmas movies this year and we did that.

Last last week I upgraded from cable to Direct TV and spent the better part of the weekend channel surfing all five billion channels. Got to watch the election returns in HD. (We have about 40 channels in HD).

Have you any idea how good the Food Network looks in HD??

I'm telling you. This changes everything.

Im waiting patiently for the switch off on the old tvs. Lots of folks are worried that when this happens its gonna be a mess.
HD is going to be a while for me, I got a new tv last year & it would be hard to convince the missus we need another

next up for Jeff:

Bluray!

Yeah, Bluray is right but it's like $500! I used to be a cutting edge kind of guy. But now I'm just cheap.

Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) jumped more than 6 percent after a company source said it planned to give up on its HD DVD format for high-definition video.

I think that we're about to take the plunge, our picture keeps getting darker and darker so that when we watch we have to turn out all of the lights or draw the blinds.

itll take longer to get folks to adopt this new format with higher prices on players & dvds

I know that we won't be upgrading any time soon. Probably not as long as DVD is still in regular production.

This too shall pass...once the format takes hold those prices will -- and must -- come down. Same thing happened with other formats. Remember when you had to pay $100 to get a VHS movie? I'm old enough to remember that. It will come down. Besides, I still have my old VHS movies, I still have my 400 laser discs, I still have a few movies on Betamax, too. And I still watch them from time to time (Best copy of It's a Wonderful Life I have is on laser). I'm in no hurry to get Blu Ray because everything coming out on Blu Ray sucks. When I see something I really, really want...then I'll buy.

Besides, right now my television is absorbed with baseball. I can watch 8 games at one time. My wife came into the living room last night and saw me doing that and said she was calling 911. When I asked why she said it was because she was about to kill me. Yesterday was just opening day and she knows darn well what that means almost nightly between now and October...

laser disc was awesome it just never caught on I guess
its gonna take a while for bluray to become the standard, dvd has just been around for so long & the pricing is low
