I am a fan of Alistair Sim's version and the Muppet Christmas Carol, although I've seen all of them except for two that I know of.
I didn't care for the one Patrick Stewart did, he overdid it a bit. And the Henry Winkler version wasn't all that great either.
Mr. Magoo had a good one and I only saw the George C. Scott version once, but I liked it.

It's the Muppets for me! It's one of my fav films period.
A truly awful (IMHO!) cartoon version came out a few years ago http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259929/ . It adds extra characters and has some strange wandering from the plot. It had a good cast as well, shame really.

Which is the one with the Lockhart family in it? June Lockhart plays one of Cratchett's daughters and Gene Lockhart plays Scrooge's Nephew? I have that one, Seymor Hicks, George C. Scott, I think I have the Muppets that I taped off of the TV, I'd like to get the one with Henry Winklerm, and I remember a Christmas special with Marlo Thomas in it but she may have playing the George Bailey role in an "It's a Wonderful Life" take off...There seem to be many, many versions of A Christmas Carol though...I just found Allistair Sim to be a little over the top...Somewhat overacted...That was the style at the time that it was made...But George C. Scott was such a masterful actor...I'd watch anything he was in...

My favorite version is the Patrick Stewart version. I think it is the closest to the book. I especially like that it's the only version that shows Scrooge going to church on Christmas morning, which is in the book.
The Cratchet family is absolutely the best. Some versions actually had a fat Bob Cratchet. Impossible on the amount of food this family had to eat. Most accurate depiction hands down, although George C. Scott probably played the Scrooge part better.

My favorite is the Patrick Stewart especially after I heard or read somewhere that he did a "Christams carol" as a one man stage show. I also like Alstiair Sim and I thought "Scrooged" was a great update. I believe that they are doing a new version of it with Jim Carrey and in the same digital format as Polar Express.

:rudolph:My favorite is, and always has been, Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol... you can't begin to understand how thrilled I was to have been asked to contribute new material to the 40th Anniversary comic book adaptation of this beloved holiday classic..! My writing partner and I even included an illustrated recipe for Razzleberry Dressing..!

cheesy You were thinking somewhere in 1930. George's came much later.
Reginald Owen performed his role as Ebenezer Scrooge in 1938, perhaps it was his version of A Christmas Carol that you saw.
I saw Alistair Sim's version ('51) before I saw the one with Reginald Owen - I thought R.O. over-acted.

There are so many. Hands down the classics are the best, but I recommend the one that came out a few years ago with Kelsey Grammar. At first I didn't care for it much when I initially saw it, but after viewing it a few times, it grew on me. Plus, Kelsey Grammar is a good guy and I respect him. He sat on my bedside and visited with me for some time (apart of a USO tour visiting wounded soldiers returning from the middle east). I'll always support him because of that visit. He and Jennifer Love Hewitt...they were both apart of that USO tour. Ironically, both are in that Christmas Carol together. What are the odds? Maybe they took a break from filming to visit us back then.

It would have tio be the 1951 version - black and white only!- on Alastair Sim being Scrooge. He is soooo good! I watch all year long. I know every word....how pathetic is that?

I agree, but I also tried the colorized version of it last season when it came out, and found that I like it colorized as well as B&W!

I have to say that the Patrick Stewart version is my favorite. I find my self renting it again and again. I really didn't care for the singing version that came out a couple of years ago with Kelsey Grammer.
I also like the Vanessa Williams Ebony that was out the last couple of years.

:hello: Leave it to you to find something completely different, RJD. Clever idea.
Yes, DVDGUY - Reginald Owen's '38 version was in black and white. As I recall the film was a little "rickety" and that made it seem even a tad older.
Glad you found the one you were looking for Mamma.
cheesy Black Adder's Christmas Carol was okay too, but it was slapstick British humour and if you aren't good with accents you'd miss most of the lines.
