This is a word to all of you Santas out there who work with and/or are connected with Firefighters and/or Volunteer Fire Departments:
Each year, on the steps of City Hall here in New York, the members of the New York City Fire Department (http://www.nyc.gov/fdny) salute their own with their happiest rite of passage, Fire Department Medal Day! With Battalion Chief Brian Dixon (Ret.) serving as Master of Ceremonies, the 4-hour ceremony salutes individual and team Firefighters with the presentation of medals for distinguished acts of bravery committed during the preceding 12 months. The Mayor, the Fire Commissioner, and the Chief of Department are the primary speakers at the event; and the happy honks, as ever, are courtesy of the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, (http://www.fdnypipesanddrums.net) Firefighter Liam Flaherty, Drum Major!
Please make a note of the date: Wednesday afternoon, June 4th, starting at 11 am (EST). I'm sure you'll understand why, despite the fact that it does tend to be a little noisy, there is much fun to be had on Fire Department Medal Day! (Unless, of course, it rains, in which case the party moves indoors to the Gymnasium at Pace University next door.)
