It's for those of you with young will be getting out for summer break within the next few weeks. Recently I have started working on some ideas for Summer Sensations kits. These are little put together kits that can be stored on the shelf or in a closet and pulled out when the "I'm Bored" strikes...which when my kids were young was about day four of summer break. I'm thinking about four different types of kits.
  • Prop Kits (for pretend play)
  • Crafty Kits
  • Exploration Kits
  • Experience Kits
Right now I am working on a prop kit that has a pirates theme. You can use a copier paper box...which works perfectly for storing the pirate gear. A Hat, handerchief with skulls and crossbones, sword, gold coins, treasure map, treasure chest, eye patch, etc.

I am also putting together an exploration kit called Bugs Galore which includes things like:
  • Bug jar (You can make your own from a plastic mayo jar or Walmart has some cheap ones)
  • Magifying glass
  • Sticks or twigs for picking up bugs
  • Small guide to different kinds of insects
  • Bug Journal for recording
  • A map of the backyard for recording where they find insects
  • A flashlight
  • A small ruler (for determining size)
  • Tweezers
  • Butterfly net
  • Little plastic bugs (just for fun and pretend play or setting up a bug museum)
  • Index cards for note taking or making labels for the museum
  • DVD about Bugs Life, Antz, etc...this is for the hot afternoon after a day of bug exploring.
  • Recipe for Bug Juice to make and drink during the movie...
I am envisioning the "experience kits" to be something that has a couple items and then a trip somewhere (free or inexpensive) a fishing net and take to the lake at the park fishing. So they get the box, guess where they "experience" is taking them and then go...EXPERIENCE IT!!

Anyway...I'll come back later with some more ideas as they pop up...if anyone is interested in hearing more...
