Yesterday I shared what we've been through with our dog Sam. It has been a trial.

The arrangements were made for the vet to come to the house this morning to put him down. We had to wait until this morning because the vet couldn't make it until the kids all got here yesterday afternoon.

So we had one last night with Sam. We took heart during the day yesterday when he finally accepted a little chicken -- and he didn't throw it up. As the day went on he perked up quite a bit, not to the point where he was fully himself but he relished all the attention, seemed for recognize us all as we came into the room, and responded to our efforts to take him outside to do his business.

We were up late in the night but not because he was ill. We all just sat up and talked, laughing about the moments we've individually had with Sam and collectively remembering his goodness and kindness. Finally, at about 3am, we thought he would need some sleep and I sent everyone to bed.

For my littlest girls, it wasn't enough. They brought pillows and blankets into the room and laid down on the floor to sleep with Sam.

The vet was scheduled to be here about 8am, so around 7am I wandered into where they were sleeping and was amazed to find Sam snoring -- loudly.

Sandy came upstairs and put on his leash and he literally jumped up to go outside -- his tail wagging like crazy. He pulled on the lead and wanted to go exploring out in the yard?

He had a bowel movement. He came in all super charged, wanting to eat and getting into everyone's face. What's going here?

I had already faced several hours of questions from my children about how necessary this all was. I assured them as best I could that the vet said this was fatal for Sam, that his counts were off the charts, that his kidneys were totally gone.

But when the vet arrived this morning and Sam greeting him with energy, jumping on him and accepting the vet's love, the good doctor took one look at him and said, "We can't put this dog down today."

I don't know if it was all the red-eyed children or what but the vet completely changed his tune. "I don't care what the numbers say," he said. "You cannot discount the power of prayer. This guy has a chance."

So we didn't put Sam down today.

He's not out of the woods. We're going to change his diet, continue the treatment of antibiotics and I'm going to have another blood panel run in about a week, if all things continue well, to see if we're making any progress on his counts.

But Sam is Sam today -- as puppy-like as he has ever been. The vet looked at him again today and said he could not believe how good Sam looks and his energy for his age.

Love heals, he told us.

I sure hope he's right. I don't know if this means Sam has just a little more time or if he'll fully recover. I will be grateful for every good day we can get for him.

But I never want to see my kids cry like this again. Ever. It's been too hard.

Oh Jeff this is so wonderful !! Has your vet ever given thought to giving Sam subcutaneous fluids to help his kidneys ?? My Wishbone was at death's door too back in December and after having fluids subcutaneously he got back to his normal self. Now I give him the fluids every day right here at home. It is said that sometimes it can extend their lives a great, great deal !! Something to think about at least xo Please keep us posted - I am so happy ! xo
