It has been a whale of a day. I have recently received a pretty major change to my worklife and this week has been entirely out of control. Normally I can shut down my work a bit at this time of year and concentrate more on what my plans are for Christmas online. I'm not sure if this is going to happen for me this year.

But as I logged on here tonight after a difficult day I was pleasantly surprised to find a mountain of email, several private messages and a couple of hundred posts all waiting for me as a result of these forums.

All work, right?

Nope. Not at all. It is music to my ears, a balm to a work-weary soul.

These forums could never be work to me.

It got me thinking: was it is about coming here? I pondered that a bit and here's just the tip of the iceberg -- a top ten of why I love this place, starting with #10:

10. Traffic. City sidewalks, busy sidewalks...good grief, that's us. Here it is just a few days after Memorial Day and we're all here yacking about Christmas. Lots of us. How cool is that? I'm not the only Christmas sicko in the world.

9. Strangers. Look at where we come from! Seriously -- I think it is a gas that I can meet someone from somewhere else and instantly we've come together just because we have a soft spot for Christmas. Yeah, we might believe fundamentally different things even about Christmas but dang if we aren't here enjoying it together any way.

8. Friends. I cannot count how many of you I consider good friends. We've never met, never broken bread together, never borrowed each other's lawn mowers. If I could, I would, you know?

7. Humor. You make me laugh. Do you have any idea how much I value that?

6. Christmas. It's here everyday. Not just the look but the feel. Most poor schleps get Christmas just once a year.

5. Discovery. Like Christmas morning I get to see people find this and hang with it. It's awesome. I love the fact that we have non-admins who just welcome someone in the Introductions thread. Is that Christmas or what?

4. Wonder. I love it that we have a place that people can come and openly ask "what if?" or "why?" -- and can get helpful suggestions or ideas. I also love the fact that we can do something so simple -- like Crown's perpetual countdown thread -- and have it become a part of our daily lives.

3. Creativity. Ah, can you see it? I see it all the time...folks who are engerized simply by being and exchanging with others. I've watched other folks open up their own Christmas websites and build their own Christmas communities. That's awesome.

2. It's endless. It just never stops. When Christmas comes we just start over again. Look outside -- it's SUMMER and here we are!!!

1. It's what is right with the world. You all give me hope. Life is hard enough in the real world but this place here and the people who frequent it are the real world. This has become my front porch.

What's funny about this list is that it doesn't have anything to do with the gizmos on the site, the new features or any one particular person.

Everything on that list has to do with everyone here.

That's what it is all about, isn't it?
