You posted this last year, and ten months later, I found it.

Funny how things present themselves when you look.

    Or when you need them.

    Thanks for this!

What a great blog. The fruitcake images remind me so much of "A Christmas Memory". One of my favorite reads and a very well done movie as well.

Thank you, caninemom3---this has been one of my favorite pieces of Christmas literature since I first read it. And thank you, Jeff---your opinion means a lot.

    Are You a Spug?

WOW!!! I would definately be considered a SPUG. At one of my former retail jobs, my boss lady kept dropping hints about things she wanted the employees to get her. I didn't get her anything other than a card and a jar of cookies, which later that day I found in the garbage. Needless to say I left the job without ever looking back. I give to people who need it or deserve it and only because I want to NOT because I feel i have to.

I've added an image of the trademark issued for the Spug pins. You can see the design of the word "SPUG," but not the holly wreath described in newspaper articles of the time.

Thank you, Jeff! That's high praise coming from a real Christmasologist! I stumbled across the Spugs while browsing through Google News Archive a couple years ago, and was fascinated by their story. It's kind of a shame they were so short-lived. Maybe they'll be revived for their 100th anniversary in 2012.
