The Light of The World

Long Before There Was A Cross,
One Tiny Heart
Beat With The Purest Love
The World Would Ever Know.

And Two Faithful People
Carried That Love To Bethlehem
So It Might Be Born
In Every Heart One Day.

When The World Had Forgotten
The ONE Who Created Every Man,
Three Kings Remembered And Came
To Kneel Before
The Author Of Their Lives.

And Seekers Everywhere
Set Out To Find HIM,
Drawn By The Radiant Light
Of His Love.

Long Before We Knew His Name,
He Cherished EVERY ONE Of us --
Before His Tiny Lips Spoke A Word,
He Knew Us By Heart.

And This Time Called Christmas
Is Our Chance To Give Him
The Greatest Gift We Could Offer In Return-
The Gift Of Ourselves.

Wishing You The Joy
Of Living In His Love
At Christmas And Always.

Have you ever really read A Christmas Carol???

Posted 12-15-2010 at 11:06 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

My 20-hour days of December usually end with a few moments with a good book. This year I have dedicated my December reading to A Christmas Carol.

I love Dickens but must admit to never having spent much time on the text of A Christmas Carol because I knew the story so well, thanks to all the movie versions I grew up with.

But having put about a week into now I have to tell you: READ IT.

A few weeks ago as a family we were discussing how we could do a few things different this year and one of the ideas that came up was an expansion upon our tradition of acting out the Nativity story as read in Luke 2. We do that every year and will do that this year, too:

But we thought it would be some fun to try something a little more complex and with a few more characters. Beyond the lessons of the story comes the fun of the experience and my kids can be wildly creative....

Love and Loss at Christmas

Posted 12-13-2010 at 08:56 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

He was a man sometimes overlooked. That happens a lot to people in wheelchairs. For more than 30 years he battled with MS. A body that once loved to play basketball and, in its youth, engaged in competitive sports had fully rebelled. But the man inside the body was not bitter. He was a cheerful “old soul” – a man who simply wouldn’t or couldn’t be put down. His name was Randy.

I would see him primarily at church where he would sit in the back, in his wheelchair, each week, greeting those who walked by with big smiles and a hearty hello. Occasionally I would be called upon to teach a class and Randy was always there with an engaged mind and a willingness to participate. I loved hearing him speak up, if only because his perspective usually sharpened the point I was trying to make.

In good weather Randy would drain the batteries on his wheelchair, thrilling in the speed he could achieve as he raced up and down the street. I once asked him why he did that...

A Christmas Story

I thought this was such a nice story. I hope everyone enjoys xo

It was only five days before Christmas. The spirit of the season hadn't yet caught up with me, even though cars packed the parking lot of our Houston area Target Shopping Center. Inside the store, it was worse.

Shopping carts and last minute shoppers jammed the aisles. Why did I come today? I wondered. My feet ached almost as much as my head. My list contained names of several people who claimed they wanted nothing,
but I knew their feelings would be hurt if I didn't buy them something.

Buying for someone who had everything and deploring the high cost of items, I considered gift-buying anything but fun.

Hurriedly, I filled my shopping cart with last minute items and proceeded to the long checkout lines. I picked the shortest but it looked as if it would mean at least a 20 minute wait....

Simplifying Christmas

Posted 12-05-2010 at 11:25 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)
Updated 12-05-2010 at 11:27 PM by Jeff Westover

We had an opportunity tonight to go as a family for a Christmas devotional in Salt Lake City. This annual event is held in the LDS Conference Center, a facility that holds some 21,000 people. Like all Christmas events downtown it is free but you have to have a ticket to get in. We lucked into some tickets at the last minute so we rushed down there to take part in it.

When we got there we discovered we had seven people but only six tickets, so I had my wife head on out with the kids as I fought traffic to get to one of the parking facilities. It was very late, almost for time for the event to begin and I was simply stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. By the time I found a spot and began my walk, it was 25-minutes into the event and I didn't want to disrupt things by trying to find my family amongst all those people.

So headed on foot to wait outside across the street at Temple Square.

For those not from this area or even familiar with Salt Lake...
