Twas The Night Jesus Came

Twas' the night Jesus came and all through the house,
Not a person was praying, not one in the house.

The Bible was left on the shelf without care,
for no one thought Jesus would come there.
The children were dressing to crawl into bed,
not once ever kneeling or bowing their head.

And Mom in the rocking chair with baby on her lap,
was watching the Late Show as I took a nap.
When out of the east there rose such a clatter,
I sprang to my feet to see what's the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
tore open the shutters and lifted the sash.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but Angels proclaiming that Jesus was here.

The light of His face made me cover my head,
it was Jesus returning just like He'd said.
And though I possessed worldly...

Where to put the stupid tree?

Posted 11-10-2010 at 12:55 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Last weekend I found myself driving on a blazing trip to California so my wife could attend to the business of a family medical emergency. I tried to fly her out there but a last minute deal on a one hour flight was more than $1000 so I put her in the car and literally dropped her off at her mother's house and turned around and came back.

This kind of thing was no big deal for the kids as I have left them home alone before, especially since my 24 year old daughter had no work committments for the weekend. As I was literally going out the door -- kids somewhat in shock over the sudden-ness of it all -- I told them if they wanted they could put up the Christmas tree in my absence.

It was a stormy weekend, they would be inside most of the time and it was an activity I felt would keep them happily occupied.

Wrong.

Our main living room -- where the tree has to go -- is very inflexible. It is rectangular in shape, has a large picture...

Remember My Birthday - A Different Perspective

HOW TO CELEBRATE CHRIST'S BIRTHDAY
-- from Christ

Dear children,

It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking My name out of the season. Maybe you've forgotten that I wasn't actually born during this time of the year and that it was some of your predecessors who decided to celebrate My birthday on what was actually a time of pagan festival. Although I do appreciate being remembered anytime.

How I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own. I don't care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate My birth just, GET ALONG AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Now, having said that, let Me go on. If it bothers you that the town in which you live doesn't allow a scene depicting My birth,...

Christmas and Politics

Posted 11-01-2010 at 05:27 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I have a friend who is my political opposite who, for the purposes of this post, I will call Paul. That, of course, is not his real name but I have no doubts my family and friends who might read this will know who I am speaking about. I think the reasons why I don't use his real name will be obvious as I share the story.

I'm not sure when Paul and I became friends. We lived years ago fairly close to each other and I think we might have first met at a school event we had in common with our kids when we lived in California. In any event, we're about as different as two people can be.

We have had many an intellectual conversation about life, the universe and everything including a fair share of politcal sparring. He's as atheist as the day is long and I am, as he likes to say, as Mormon as a dude living in Utah can be (he knows how I deplore being classified as a Utah Mormon).

Our friendship has always been very warm though. He's got great kids,...

Are You a Spug?

Posted 10-19-2010 at 02:42 PM by MerryCarey (MerryCarey's Blog)

This is my maiden voyage as a blogger. This time it's a trip back in time to 1912 to visit a little-known chapter in Christmas history.

Are you a Spug?

Well, let’s see… Do you believe that it is foolish to join in giving Christmas presents to those higher up? Do you believe that it is vulgar to give Christmas presents only because they are given to you? Do you believe that it is wicked to give Christmas presents without love and common sense?

In 1912, if you answered “yes” to these questions, you had what it took to become a Spug. You could get together with four others who shared your beliefs to form a Spug Squad, choose a captain, and write to the Spug headquarters in New York City for membership cards and official Spug pins. As a full-fledged Spug, your mission would be to “make as many converts as possible,” and “to eliminate by co-operative effort the custom of giving indiscriminately at Christmas, and to further in every way the true Christian...
