Christmas in October

Years ago when I would walk to work I passed the front window of a department store. Most of the time I'd admire the window but around Thanksgiving I found myself dreading it. Each year I would brace myself for the sign I would see that would really set me off. The window would be covered in brown paper and a single sign would simply read "Unlike our competitors we like to celebrate our holidays one at a time and we refuse to show our new Christmas window until it is actually Christmas".

I never understood that.

I get that people don't like seeing Christmas coming too early. I understand if folks become impatient with stores packed with holiday merchandise displayed with fertilizer and flip-flops. But do we have to be snotty about it?

After all, it is Christmas. What is really wrong with songs on the radio that send a message of hope? Is seeing a Christmas tree during Indian summer really a burden? When Christmas comes around I hear people every...

This has ALWAYS inspired me very much. As it is getting close to His birthday celebration, I wanted to do this for the Lord. This was written by an anonymous person but is truly beautiful so a little early, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS !!!!

Remember My Birthday?

As you well know, we are getting closer to My birthday. Every year there is a celebration in My honor and I think that this year the celebration will be repeated. During this time there are many people shopping for gifts, there are many radio announcements, TV commercials, and in every part of the world everyone is talking that My birthday is getting closer and closer.

It is really very nice to know, that at least once a year, some people think of Me. As you know, the celebration of My birthday began...

Just What Exactly is the Christmas Spirit?

Posted 10-06-2010 at 01:03 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Every time I send out a new newsletter I hold my breath. Over the years, the Merry News has grown to 50,000 subscribers.

I am always a little shocked at some of the feedback we receive when we send that many emails out. The sheer number, of course, means there will be work to do. You can't cram thousands of people into a building without having the bathrooms ready, you know? Even still, I get surprised at how some people respond.

The software we're using tells me where a subscriber came from -- their IP address, their approximate physical location, the website they subscribed from, the time, date and even browser they were using when they signed up. I see all that. So when they write the darndest things I just have to laugh.

Some, of course, claim they never subscribed at all and would YOU GUYS QUIT SPAMMING ME ALL THE TIME! (This was just our 2nd newsletter since last Christmas). Sigh.

Others will write: What are you talking...

A Sense of History

Posted 10-05-2010 at 02:52 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I do not feel as old as I sound. And I'm NOT as old as I sound, I suppose. But when you start throwing terms around like "history" and "20th anniversary" you tend to sound a bit, well, old.

But next week we start our 20th year of publishing Christmas.

Now, I know I've told the story over and over. But let me qualify that statement for those who haven't read it or heard it before: When I met my wife she came with a bonus: a five year old little girl who would become my eldest daughter. She didn't believe in Santa. We enlisted the help of Elf Ernest that first fall and Christmas together to teach her about Santa and to answer her questions about Christmas. These came in the way of Santa Updates, over a fax machine. Those faxes she passed to her friends, whose parents called us wanting the faxes too. That grew from a handful to dozens to hundreds -- which eventually pushed us to the Internet. And here we are today -- 20 years later, still doing it, still celebrating...

A Knock at the Door from Autumn

Posted 09-28-2010 at 10:02 AM by rodmonster

A Knock at the Door from Autumn

Like clockwork it has arrived,
The distinct scent of vanishing jade.
Leaves dancing as they fall from high,
Vibrantly colored before they fade.

The brisk breeze is dashing all about,
Carrying the plush foliage to-and-fro.
Grand peaks of color encircle the trees,
As the burnt dusk begins to glow.

Seasonal gourds of all sizes and shapes,
Cover vine laden plains as far as one can see.
Shadows cast from the sinking auburn sun,
Via rays of light through the sagging bare trees.

A faint aroma from chimneys afar,
Trickles through the end of the day.
Giving a sense of warmth from deep within,
Evoking childhood memories of yesterday.

As this twilight arrives with a sea of stars,
As it has done each and every year before.
With much content in my tranquil soul,
I welcome Autumn knocking at my door…
