Christmas Thoughts

Posted 12-25-2011 at 08:28 PM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

We sit here less than 2 hours remaining in Christmas 2011, the journey we began on December 26, 2010 at 12:01am is coming to a close. As with previous years, this one is tops on my list, it felt strange not to leave the house with everyone coming over here, turkey and prime rib for dinner. We are exhausted, as we have spent the last 2 days prepping for this, my wife much more than I, as I have had to sit most of the time due to surgery. We have more festivities ahead of us this week, we will be hosting (again) a New Year's Eve party, New Year's Day we head to my grandparents for my family Christmas, and a week or so later we will be hosting yet again my wife's and mine combined birthday party. This is the time of year I live for, I love the sense of "peace" I feel seeing my kids faces, and smile as they discover their new treasures, a time when I can walk up to my wife and just give her a hug and whisper Merry Christmas to her. This year has been the best Christmas ever, and...

Mixed Feelings and the Holidays!

Posted 12-23-2011 at 07:12 AM by gabulldawg

Well I can't believe it's the holidays again. As the song goes "another year older,Another year just begun" or however it goes...I have somewhat mixed feelings this year at the holidays and feel guilty for having them at all.
Back in 2009 at the holidays I was just getting back on my feet from a divorce from being married 13 years so everyone kinda expected me to be a mess and I was. I don't remember getting out of bed except to work the month of December. Last year was a really good holiday season. I don't remember feeling like this. As I am in the final days before I offically and finally become a dad I find myself questioning alot of things...and I really had high hopes for this holiday season. But on November 6 of this year everything changed in a big way with my parents getting injured and my dad having a major stroke and even though he made it,and may somewhat recover,it hurts me that I know he is hurting this season and I can't help it,I know he wants to be home...

Anxious, Shmanxious

Posted 12-23-2011 at 04:19 AM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

I have been awake for nearly 2 hours, Christmas is less than 2 days away, surgery 7 hours away. My anxiety and nerves are kicked into high gear right now, so much to do and I will be incapacitated for much of the next 2 days. I average 5-6 hours of sleep a night, I went to sleep around 11:30 last night not feeling anxious or nervous or stressed out. I woke up before 4am and just laid in bed, feeling a cat walk on me to find a comfortable spot to rest, I tried to get back to sleep to no avail, the surgery, my associates at work, and the responsibilities I left them, and the general and not so general events of the last few weeks weighing heavily in my mind I decided to get up and put on Santa Claus The Movie and surf the web, always coming back to home MMC. I think I even heard a bird knock on the window around 4:45 and say "What the heck are you doing up this early?" As we brace for the last 42 hours until Santa comes, we have to finish cleaning, finish wrapping presents, start...

Are we weird?

Posted 12-20-2011 at 04:05 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I received an email from a site user who saw this article from The Atlantic asking Why are Christmas Sites So Weird?

My Merry Christmas is mentioned in the article but they didn't say anything about us other than to mock our toll free number, 877-Net-Xmas. (I had no idea that was weird).

Are we weird?

You know what I think is weird? I think a publication that makes a blanket statement and then doesn't back it up is weird.

I think it is weird that they would write an article with links and everything and then make no effort whatsoever to contact the people who run those weird websites.

They think it is weird that we all have a countdown to Christmas feature on the site.

What's so weird about that?

If they knew anything about people who love Christmas they'd know that is a vital feature to the website. People love to countdown to Christmas.

What's so weird about that?...

Icicle Lights for Christmas and Beyond

Posted 12-20-2011 at 02:19 PM by Lazarus
Updated 09-11-2012 at 02:36 PM by Jeff Westover

One of the most traditionally used type of holiday lights, icicle lights adorn houses on every corner during Christmas. They are perhaps the most popular type of Christmas light because of their appearance, trailing along roof lines with graceful drops that call to mind the image of frozen icicles in a wintry season. While traditionally used only at Christmas, icicle lights offer a unique display in that they can be used for multiple holidays and functions. With a myriad of colors, they are a versatile product that inspires creativity in design.

A good icicle light has a range of drops with tightly wound wire. Loose wire can destroy the appearance of the frozen icicle, so wire that is twisted tightly and does not gap keeps icicle lights from becoming tangled and unsightly. Another trait of a good icicle light is the color. LED icicle lights have the truest color and a longer life span since they use only 10-20% of the energy that an incandescent light uses. Despite rumors...
