Are we weird?

Posted 12-20-2011 at 04:05 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I received an email from a site user who saw this article from The Atlantic asking Why are Christmas Sites So Weird?

My Merry Christmas is mentioned in the article but they didn't say anything about us other than to mock our toll free number, 877-Net-Xmas. (I had no idea that was weird).

Are we weird?

You know what I think is weird? I think a publication that makes a blanket statement and then doesn't back it up is weird.

I think it is weird that they would write an article with links and everything and then make no effort whatsoever to contact the people who run those weird websites.

They think it is weird that we all have a countdown to Christmas feature on the site.

What's so weird about that?

If they knew anything about people who love Christmas they'd know that is a vital feature to the website. People love to countdown to Christmas.

What's so weird about that?...

Icicle Lights for Christmas and Beyond

Posted 12-20-2011 at 02:19 PM by Lazarus
Updated 09-11-2012 at 02:36 PM by Jeff Westover

One of the most traditionally used type of holiday lights, icicle lights adorn houses on every corner during Christmas. They are perhaps the most popular type of Christmas light because of their appearance, trailing along roof lines with graceful drops that call to mind the image of frozen icicles in a wintry season. While traditionally used only at Christmas, icicle lights offer a unique display in that they can be used for multiple holidays and functions. With a myriad of colors, they are a versatile product that inspires creativity in design.

A good icicle light has a range of drops with tightly wound wire. Loose wire can destroy the appearance of the frozen icicle, so wire that is twisted tightly and does not gap keeps icicle lights from becoming tangled and unsightly. Another trait of a good icicle light is the color. LED icicle lights have the truest color and a longer life span since they use only 10-20% of the energy that an incandescent light uses. Despite rumors...

What is Peace on Earth???

Posted 12-16-2011 at 07:17 AM by lauriebear

What is Peace on Earth, where and did the idea come from, why do we still wish for it? Yesterday I goggled the saying “Peace On Earth” a lot popped up, in fact I had 493,000,000 results!!! One I found to be quite extraordinary a cartoon made in 1939, about how man killed themselves off and the creatures find a Bible and actually live by it, truly Peace On Earth. It was remade in 1955 and called Good Will To Man.
What does this all mean I still am searching, I also found so ugly sites, people mocking Peace on Earth, saying how humans and mankind are engineered to fight, that we fight because we envy what another has, another said if there was Peace On Earth that would mean one government toppled the entire world and we would be living under a dictator!!! Others said Peace on Earth would make it boring…
SO here I ponder just a few days from Christmas, what is Peace on Earth. Is it what I thought as a child that all mankind would come together and love one another? That...

What do I mean when I wish someone a Merry Christmas?

Posted 12-15-2011 at 02:18 PM by lauriebear

I posted in a forum here Atheists Amongst Us?” It is a poll, and it now has me thinking, what do I mean when I wish someone a Merry Christmas? Do I push my beliefs on others? While I wish I could say no, I wonder now, in my own way, by saying Merry Christmas am I pushing my belief? I feel very strongly about Christmas, and what it means to me. In my Church we do not “show” the baby Jesus until Mid-Night Christmas Morning, the manger right now as we speak is empty, the Baby will not be place in it until the afore mentioned time. I believe God gave us his only son to help lead us though darkness, I believe in Mary and Joseph and the long journey they took, as well as the three wise men. I also believe in Santa and all the magic of this season. I believe because I choose to believe, I would hate to think I pushed my views, but I will state here and now, I believe and will always believe. I also do questions those who say they do not believe, I do not come out and question but in my...

Handel's Hallelujah Chorus

Posted 12-14-2011 at 09:42 AM by lauriebear

Handel's Messiah is a story of resurrection. It is both the biblical story of Christ's life and resurrection on earth, and the story of Handel's return from oblivion.
Like many of the great composers, Handel was a child prodigy. He began composing operas at young age and by his twenties he was the best paid composer on earth with people fighting for seats whenever he performed. However, fame is fleeting and Handel’s music soon became old-fashioned. No matter what Handel tried, his compositions failed. Bankruptcy and depression followed. Handel had a stroke and developed a palsy that crippled his fingers.
It seemed that Handel’s career was over. Frederick the Great wrote that “Handel’s great days are over, his inspiration is exhausted.” Yet the very situations that seemed to destroy Handel changed him and gave his compositions more depth and feeling.

The Inspiration for the Oratorio

Handel’s friend and patron Charles Jennens sent him a libretto...
