Christmas Family

Posted 11-11-2011 at 08:05 AM by caninemom3

Many years ago a couple took a journey because of a census. The husband led the way with his wife seated on their donkey. She was growing quite tired and weary as their destination was so far and she was expecting her first child soon.

When they arrived there was not any place they could stay. The only shelter available was in a place where cattle are kept and there was no bed for her baby.

When he was born there were no fancy hospitals, no monitors to make sure he and his mother were okay, nothing but coldness and uncertainty about the future.

The mother and her husband knew everything would be fine as they had great faith and they were right.

As we celebrate Christmas let us remember it does not take money, extravagant presents, or bounties of fattening foods. It just takes being with the ones who are your family and being together. Let us embrace those we love and count our blessings and be kind to one another even if we have...

Thanksgiving...Family, Love, and FOOTBALL!!!!

Posted 11-10-2011 at 01:59 PM by lauriebear

There is nothing quite like the way Thanksgiving brings families together for giving thanks for all we have to be thankful for. Some, it's their health, their career, or their friends, but all will agree that it's the family that has are gathered together that they are most thankful for, even if you can’t spend the whole day and you do the “house hop”.
Thanksgiving is a holiday that is steeped in tradition. It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without the turkey and stuffing and the apple and pumpkin pie. But since 1920, it would not be Thanksgiving without NFL Football.
NFL football has become as big a tradition at Thanksgiving as the turkey and mashed potatoes. Just ask anyone and if your Thanksgiving celebrations are anything like mine you will find the “family” gathered around the TV cheering for their team to win.
Now, if you are going to a large gathering, you may want to check out these tips to get the best location to enjoy all the action.

In Memory Of, A Thanksgiving Tribute

Posted 11-08-2011 at 09:46 PM by caninemom3

Thanksgiving is traditionally a day of family, feast and football ! It was always that way with our family. What a wonderful time and wonderul season. Each year on Thanksgiving we would all gather at my parents' home and catch up with one another, laugh, joke and of course enjoy all the scrumptious delights my mother had prepared for the feast.

I saw my parents quite often throughout the rest of the year but on Thanksgiving they both seemed different somehow. You see, Thanksgiving Day marked the beginning of Christmas Season for our family.

My parents both adored Christmas. They turned into giddy little children at Christmastime and it was not unusual when one went shopping with them for Christmas gifts for them to "ooh" and "ahhh" over each beautifully decorated store and display that they saw.

One Thanksgiving was different.

My dear brother Andy had passed away during the Summer of 1977 at the age of 31. ...

Cookbooks are here!

Posted 11-08-2011 at 07:17 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

26 cases and 356 pounds of material was shipped to my house and received today -- the largest single shipment by UPS ever to my house.

The neighbors were gawking.

Once I got it all inside I eagerly opened the top box and pulled out the first fresh copy of The Sweet Treats of Christmas.

It was a great Christmas moment, I have to tell you. What a thrill to see the finished product -- something that we never planned to do that just came together from a groundswell of support in the community. I can't wait to ship them out and get reactions from folks about them.

My Mom is going to get one tomorrow. I know she'll be stunned. When I told her about it a month or two ago she seemed at first a little lukewarm. Mom doesn't cook much any more.

But when I told her the story of its creation and how it is made up of recipes from real people from all over the world she perked right up. "How do I get one of those?"

Pain of Change

Posted 11-04-2011 at 11:08 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)
Updated 11-04-2011 at 11:12 PM by Jeff Westover

We live in a sea of change in my home. With kids in various states of chaos -- age 25, 19, 17, 15, 13, 11 and 9 -- change is what life is all about right now.

And I don't have to tell any of you how hard growing up can be.

One of the elements of growing up is dealing with things that have changed beyond our control. Aubree, for example, still helps track Santa on Christmas Eve. That's in her control. Whether we get snow on Christmas is not within her control. And sometimes that is hard to deal with.

I had the other day my teenager daughters (which is code for "shoppers") starting to talk about getting up at 4am on Black Friday and hitting the stores. Like little old ladies they were waxing nostalgic.

I hated to throw cold water on them. But as this week has unfolded with Black Friday news it has become evident that the 5am openings of the past are just that -- over.

Now all stores look to either be open on...
