What kind of Christmas will 2011 bring?

Posted 04-19-2011 at 07:40 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I received an odd kind of email the other day. Actually, it wasn't odd at all other than the fact that I received it in April.

Being a Christmas venue we frequently get mail from folks looking for a little help. In recent years we have received a lot of this kind of mail. Here is what we received this week:

Dear My Merry Christmas,

My name is Alison and I am 15 years old.

You have been a big part of our Christmas for a few years now. I think this year you will be our whole Christmas.

My mom lost her job last fall and can't find another one. Her unemployment ran out and she had to take a job working in a dry cleaners. My dad hasn't lived with us for five years and does not send money. We barely have any money any more. My sister and I do not complain. I am hoping to get a job this summer to help.

I am just wondering if there are any ideas you have of what we can do. I really want my mom to have

Forgotten

Posted 04-19-2011 at 06:52 AM by caninemom3

This blog may be a bit muddled because I am writing after just finishing my midnight shift but I have some things that are important to me that I want to put in writing so to speak.

I remember when I was a child and Easter would come around. Not only do I remember the wonderful bulging Easter baskets I would get each year, but I remember something else too.

My mother, Susy, always taught me that the true meaning of Easter is about Jesus as is the true meaning of Christmas. It is not that we were a terribly religious family. We never attended church together, didn't read the bible together or even pray together. My mother's teachings were enough to impress upon me the importance of this man named Jesus. When I was a child there were any number of TV movies and specials about Him both at Christmas and at Easter and it disturbs me that there are so few this day and age.

To some people, I guess He is just a myth or perhaps to others didn't even really...

The Centurian

Posted 04-18-2011 at 08:45 PM by caninemom3

by Max Lucado

The day began as had a hundred others—dreadfully. It was bad enough to be in Judea, but it was hell to spend hot afternoons on a rocky hill supervising the death of pickpockets and rabble-rousers. Half the crowd taunted, half cried. The soldiers griped. The priests bossed. It was a thankless job in a strange land. He was ready for the day to be over before it began.

He was curious at the attention given to the flatfooted peasant. He smiled as he read the sign that would go on the cross. The condemned looked like anything but a king. His face was lumpy and bruised. His back arched slightly and his eyes faced downward. “Some harmless hick,” mused the centurion. “What could he have done?”
Then Jesus raised his head. He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t uneasy. His eyes were strangely calm as they stared from behind the bloody mask. He looked at those who knew him—moving deliberately from face to face as if he had a word for each.

The Sufferings of His Broken Heart

Go with me for a moment to witness what was perhaps the foggiest night in history. The scene is very simple; you’ll recognize it quickly. A grove of twisted olive trees. Ground cluttered with large rocks. A low stone fence. A dark, dark night.

Now, look into the picture. Look closely through the shadowy foliage.

See that person? See that solitary figure? What’s he doing? Flat on the ground. Face stained with dirt and tears. Fists pounding the hard earth. Eyes wide with a stupor of fear. Hair matted with salty sweat. Is that blood on his forehead?

That’s Jesus. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Maybe you’ve seen the classic portrait of Christ in the garden. Kneeling...

Happy 6th!

Posted 04-12-2011 at 09:14 PM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)
Tags 6th, birthday

6 years ago at this moment (11:00pm), we were only a little more than an hour away from meeting our first child. I was unaware of how much my life was going to change, even though we had gone to classes, read books, etc... Nothing could prepare you for how much your world changes. My boy JP will be 6, and to see how much he has grown from that little helpless baby, to such a smart, energetic, handsome boy he is now, is such a shock. I love that boy so much, he has changed my life for the better, and I will continue to do my best to raise him to be a respectful, honest, caring young man. Nearly 6 years ago we were bringing him home for the first time, two young parents standing on the stoop of our apartment, crying and looking at each other, with one question: What do we do? I think we have done well thus far.

Happy 6th Birthday JP!
