A Christmas Event

Posted 12-17-2010 at 03:24 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

As I type this I have all six of my daughters bunched together in the upstairs bathroom in front of the mirror primping for tonight's big event -- David Archuleta and Michael York with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra on Temple Square's Annual Christmas concert. We'll be attending with about 30,000 other people -- 21k in the main hall and the rest in overflow venues around Temple Square.

This is not the first time we've attended this event. In fact, we're lucky to usually get to go each year. It doesn't matter who the guest artist is, though there seems to be a bigger deal about it this year because of a young pop star. But for us the stars of the show are really members of the Choir, a few of whom we know as neighbors.

But what makes this event special isn't really the event itself, though we love it. It is the fact that we get dressed up and we do it together. All the elements combine to make it festive -- there are lights, the music is superb world-class...

Season's Meetings

Posted 12-17-2010 at 06:41 AM by caninemom3

Each year we ring in the holiday season by attending dozens of holiday meetings. This Christmas committee, that planning event. Then we still have to make the rounds to every store in the metro-plex. 'Tis the season for weeks of ulcer inducing meetings and shopping, then wrapping for about 72 straight hours. Christmas morning I find myself sitting around the tree with a glazed look and half a roll of tape stuck in my hair.

I stack three stories of gifts in front of each child. Within ten minutes we're up to our eyeballs in wrapping paper. I have five children. That's five three-story gift stacks and about 1200 yards of wrapping paper. Last year it took us three days to find the cat.

I was scanning for Christmas sales when I ran across an Internet ad: "100 FREE HOURS!" That's it! That's what I want for Christmas! Not the Internet service--just the hours. My holiday calendar could make grown men weep.

Even if we can't have a chestnut or...

The Light of The World

Long Before There Was A Cross,
One Tiny Heart
Beat With The Purest Love
The World Would Ever Know.

And Two Faithful People
Carried That Love To Bethlehem
So It Might Be Born
In Every Heart One Day.

When The World Had Forgotten
The ONE Who Created Every Man,
Three Kings Remembered And Came
To Kneel Before
The Author Of Their Lives.

And Seekers Everywhere
Set Out To Find HIM,
Drawn By The Radiant Light
Of His Love.

Long Before We Knew His Name,
He Cherished EVERY ONE Of us --
Before His Tiny Lips Spoke A Word,
He Knew Us By Heart.

And This Time Called Christmas
Is Our Chance To Give Him
The Greatest Gift We Could Offer In Return-
The Gift Of Ourselves.

Wishing You The Joy
Of Living In His Love
At Christmas And Always.

Have you ever really read A Christmas Carol???

Posted 12-15-2010 at 11:06 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

My 20-hour days of December usually end with a few moments with a good book. This year I have dedicated my December reading to A Christmas Carol.

I love Dickens but must admit to never having spent much time on the text of A Christmas Carol because I knew the story so well, thanks to all the movie versions I grew up with.

But having put about a week into now I have to tell you: READ IT.

A few weeks ago as a family we were discussing how we could do a few things different this year and one of the ideas that came up was an expansion upon our tradition of acting out the Nativity story as read in Luke 2. We do that every year and will do that this year, too:

But we thought it would be some fun to try something a little more complex and with a few more characters. Beyond the lessons of the story comes the fun of the experience and my kids can be wildly creative....

The Season Is Upon Us (more lunchtime poetry)

Posted 12-15-2010 at 07:08 AM by rodmonster

The Season Is Upon Us
By V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 12-14-2010

As the winter chilled winds gust even stronger,
And the frosty temperature continues to descend.
Once again my eager mind becomes familiar,
As if finally returning - was a long lost friend.

The blessed season of generosity has returned,
A time of care for our struggling - fellow man.
Time to share with the world ones peace and good will,
And to bring to all around all the joy that we can.

A tranquil smile extends across my content face,
As memories from my childhood warm me from within.
Of anticipation for the arrival of the beloved Saint Nick,
And of the account of our Savior who had no room at the Inn.

Warm cider and hot chocolate enjoyed by a cozy fire,
Plump marshmallows and chestnuts roasting close in hand.
Majestic gifts from the heart being given to one another,
Completed with mistletoe...
