"You May Say That I'm a Dreamer..."

Posted 12-08-2010 at 07:42 AM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

I wasn't planning on doing a second blog post today, but I feel compelled to do another with today being the 30th anniversary of the assassination of John Lennon. I was only 5 years old when it happened and I, at the time, had no clue who he was, but I do remember my father being upset about it. I would not become a fan of the Beatles until I was 18 years old, and I was just amazed by their music, but as I learned about each Beatle, I became most interested in the life of John Lennon, he like myself lost his mother at age 16, I felt I could relate to him in that way. He was a very witty, intelligent man, who stood up for what he believed, something I still need to work on. I loved his music especially the Beatles music, while most of his solo stuff was less than stellar, Imagine always sticks in my mind, and is one of my favorites. John Lennon was taken from this world to early by a crazed man, and sometimes I think what contributions he could have made in music, and or the world if he...

Santa Claus & Me

Posted 12-07-2010 at 10:40 PM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)
Updated 12-08-2010 at 07:14 AM by xmas365

I recently touched on my youth beliefs in Santa in the thread "Parents Don't Want Their Kids to Know of Santa Claus" I would like to delve into that subject a little more.
As I said I believed in Santa a long time, well into my teen years maybe I should have seen the writing on the wall, but I truly believed, to the point where I would argue with my cousins he did exist. My early childhood was the Rockwellian vision of the perfect American family, Mom, Dad, and a little sister and a dog and cat, we had a little ranch house everything was picture perfect in the eyes of a boy of under 8 years old. Much like it is now for me I could not wait for Christmas, once I started seeing those Time/Life Treasury of Christmas Record commercials in September I started to get psyched for Christmas. We always had a real tree and we would let the branches "fall" outside overnight before decorating it, I always hated that, I wanted to decorate right then and there. Then the focus...

Simplifying Christmas

Posted 12-05-2010 at 11:25 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)
Updated 12-05-2010 at 11:27 PM by Jeff Westover

We had an opportunity tonight to go as a family for a Christmas devotional in Salt Lake City. This annual event is held in the LDS Conference Center, a facility that holds some 21,000 people. Like all Christmas events downtown it is free but you have to have a ticket to get in. We lucked into some tickets at the last minute so we rushed down there to take part in it.

When we got there we discovered we had seven people but only six tickets, so I had my wife head on out with the kids as I fought traffic to get to one of the parking facilities. It was very late, almost for time for the event to begin and I was simply stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. By the time I found a spot and began my walk, it was 25-minutes into the event and I didn't want to disrupt things by trying to find my family amongst all those people.

So headed on foot to wait outside across the street at Temple Square.

For those not from this area or even familiar with Salt Lake...

Don't We All ?

This is for the homeless man I saw who was just barely hanging on when I saw him on Saturday. In Jesus' name I pray it inspires us to remember this COULD happen to each and every one of us and that we remember nobody is below us and we should never view someone as "not worth it".....Who knows, any of us could wind up in the same situation at any time and the "shoe could wind up on the other foot" so to speak. Let us bless one another with kindness and being non-judgmental to all.

DON'T WE ALL

I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car. I had just come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work. Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum.

From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money. There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you just don't want to...

Christmas Hot, Christmas Cold

Posted 12-03-2010 at 07:01 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)
Updated 12-03-2010 at 07:05 PM by Jeff Westover

I swore that one of these days I would post on this blog during the first week of December.

It might be considered a bit of a frivolous thing but honestly there is little time for much of anything for me during this time of the year.

Things are about as white-hot as they come.

You can blame it on the seasonality of it all -- for the rest of the world. While we pay attention to Christmas year round here and a great many do with us the vast masses "out there" do not and when they come around right after Thanksgiving they overwhelm us.

Case in point -- last month at this time I was receiving about 200 different pieces of email, private messages and phone calls a day all associated with MMC in some way. And that's a high, high level compared to our low for the year in April, when I get maybe a dozen a day.

This week, it is between 3000 and 4000 per day.

Seriously.

And they run the gamut....
